Come One Come All…to the USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking!

USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking

Once a year we attend a phenomenal event called USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking.   This is an annual event that is hosted by 10+ local Chamber of Commences and draws a crowd of nearly 500+.   It’s ALWAYS a hot & sticky July day, but once you get there and start having fun, you forget about the heat…sort of.  This is an annual favorite event for many in our community and it’s a great way to bring so many business owners AND their families together!   It is a kid-friendly event, so we pack the kiddos in the car after a full days work and head over to the USA Baseball stadium.  The event is FREE to all area Chamber members and includes free food, beverages, USA Baseball player autographs, Triangle-wide networking, giveaways, kids games, silent auction and more!  You literally can’t get enough of this fun afternoon!

Paint Savvy

We got our picture taken with Stormy right when we arrived; he’s the mascot for the Carolina Hurricanes and a favorite for all, both big and small.  We also saw the orange alien who is the mascot for the Cary Invasion basketball team.  We enjoyed some delicious dinner items from lots of different vendors including: Chick-fil-a, Jimmy Johns, The Meat House, and Jason’s Deli.  I fell in love with the squeezed lemonade sugar free drink from Vitamin Water (they were handing them out for free).  Pepsi was also there with a tent handing out free drinks, thank goodness for their Aquafina water on a hot day like that!  We were given nice little red recycled bags from Office Depot (great for carrying around to collect all of our goodies) and Jason’s Deli (along with Moe’s) had paper fans to help keep us cool!  We played LOTS of games and ended up winning three free shirts and several other cool prizes.  You know how much Blake loves a free shirt!  My favorite one from the night is the BRIGHT YELLOW shirt from Dickey’s BBQ Pit

Sisters enjoying the event

Our kids had a total blast getting really cool face painting by Lisa and her team at Paint Savvy Face and Body Art.  They take face painting to a whole new level!  Trent had a really cool GREEN snake painted all around his face and Mark was painted like a bat!  His little buddy, Dylan, was also at the event with is parents and he too picked out the bat face!  They were something else to see!

We always enjoy going to the USA Baseball National Training Complex, here is a little history on the facility:  it is located within the 221 acre Thomas Brooks Park in Cary and opened in 2007, and includes four baseball fields that are maintained at Major League Baseball standards, there is seating for close to 1,800 fans and another 250 on the lawn seats.  All the more reason why the USA Baseball Extra Innings Networkingevent is held here…there is room for all of us!

Cool Stuff

After eating, playing games and networking (we saw lots of Smith & Smith, CPA clients at the event and made some new friends too) we sat down to watch some of the USA Baseball game.  It was a super fun night and on the way to head home, we caught a ride on one of the John Deer Gators by a USA Baseball summer-intern (Jarred) who gave us a lift to our car.  Thanks Jarred!  Another wonderful year for the USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking event!

4th of July in Cary…the FUN STUFF!

Did you have a great 4th of July in Cary? (or wheverever you were)  Hopefully you did!

Doughnut Eating Contest

Maybe you spent the mid-week holiday with your family doing a backyard cookout, maybe you were staying cool from the summer sun by chilling at the pool, maybe you attended a local 4th of July parade and cheered as loud as you could when the armed forces proudly passed by, or maybe you were on vacation and enjoyed celebrating our freedom in another special way.  Wherever you were and whomever you were with, I hope it was wonderful!

CPA in a potato sack race

I saw something very unique during the 4th of July holiday…I saw a CPA compete in a potato sack race!!! And he WON too!  That’s right, Blake Smith, CPA, partner of Smith & Smith, CPA, participated in the Bond Park Independence Day Festival Lakeside Olympics (other celebrations for the 4th of July in Cary were easily found on Cary Citizen website)!   Blake first competed in the doughnut-eating contest, which involved tying a big, messy, sugary doughnut to a string and then trying to eat it off the fastest (he won 2nd place in the adult competition).  Not to mention that the summer sun and hot humidity heat made the doughnut all the more messy and gooey!  Next up was a potato sack race!  Blake competed against several other adults and came in FIRST PLACE!  Our crew of family was cheering like crazy and Blake used his height to really get some good jumps and crossed the finish line with a breeze!  He said that a potato sack race is all about the ‘start’, you have to get a good strong jump right off the bat…we’ll take his word for it!

4th of July in Cary

We spent the evening watching fireworks with our family from the lake at Koka Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park in Cary.  Bob and Sharon Smith (of Smith & Smith, CPA) also celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on the 4th of July in Cary, so Happy Anniversary and many more years to them!  Have a great weekend!

Client Feedback That Makes You So Proud!

Nothing can make you smile more than some really positive client feedback!

Cam & Blake earn positive client feedback

Last week Blake met with a new potential client and her business partner.  They had found us through some of our strong networking connections and were interested in meeting with us to find out if our CPA service was a right fit for their business model.  They spent about an hour with Blake going over their business accounting needs and discussing possible tax & planning scenarios.  Smith & Smith, CPA is a firm believer about it being the “right fit” between a client and our firm.  Hiring a CPA is like hiring an ongoing close best friend…your CPA is going to be involved with your business and it needs to be a strong & trusting relationship.  They had a very nice meeting and left feeling like they’d found the right CPA for their business.  I sent a thank you note to the business partners and received the nicest client feedback ever!  See below:

“I would have to say that I never would have believed it possible to be so excited about working with a particular CPA, but we absolutely LOVE you guys and we are going to place our business with you. As soon as we get our final pieces of business organized we will definitely be moving forward with Smith & Smith, CPA.  You are all such a genuine, warm group of people and I can’t imagine working with anyone else at this point!  We really appreciate the way you do business and the time that you take to make sure the potential clients are educated about their options and best accounting practices for their particular situation.”

Now that is the type of client feedback and ANY business owner would hope to hear!

Learning about local business issues

McCrory on Local Business Issues

Bob and I had a very unique opportunity earlier this week.  We were invited to attend a roundtable discussion on local business issues with Pat McCrory.  Pat McCrory is the former Mayor of Charlotte and is the Republican candidate running against Lt. Governor Walter Dalton of the Democratic Party for NC Governor.  The election will be take place in November 2012, along with the Presidential election.  The roundtable discussion was held at the Cary Innovation Center and included local business leaders, small business owners, and concerned citizens.

Pat spent an hour explaining his vision and goals for North Carolina. He talked on a variety of different topics including education, healthcare, unemployment rates, state budgets, and the government’s role in citizen’s lives.  He later accepted questions fo open discussion.

Pat McCrory

There were several questions from people in the room and Pat did his best to respond to as many questions as possible.  Some of the questions were about the education system in North Carolina, the current tax laws and local business issues.  The roundtable wrapped up at 2pm.  I’ve always been a big believer in being an informed voter and I think it is important to attend events like this so that I can have the opportunity to ask questions and find out where a candidate stands on different issues.  And as always…I had to get my picture taken, for blogging purposes of course.

Christmas in July for Read and Feed of Wake County

Christmas in July
Christmas in July

Ever heard of Christmas in July?  It’s a term that gets used for many different events and is celebrated all over the world.  We were at the Lochmere Recreation Club pool over the weekend and I noticed a large colorful Christmas tree on the back of the fence door.  The curiosity got to me, so I went over to talk with the lifeguards about the tree and found out that the Lochmere Recreation Club was hosting a Christmas in July fundraiser.  The tree was decorated with ‘ornaments’ that were actually wish list items for a local organization called Read and Feed.  There was a poster hanging by the tree that explained how the fundraiser worked.  They were asking families/individuals to select several ornaments from the tree and purchase the items and then return them to the pool club lifeguards by July 28th.  I love opportunities like this, so I had our boys come over and help me select four ornaments (stickers, magic markers, colored pencils and glue sticks).  We purchased the items that afternoon and returned them to the lifeguards.  Such an easy way to get involved and help local children!  They are also collecting new & gently used Children’s Books, so if you have any at your house, please consider donating them.

Read and Feed

Read and Feed poster

Read and Feed is a local group of volunteers who have one objective “To bridge the gaps of reading deficiencies for low income elementary students in Wake County, North Carolina”.  Read and Feed is 501(C)3 corporation that was founded in 2006 and relies on volunteers and generous donors for all of their financial backing.  They have a mobile classroom that provides child of low-income families with both reading help and a healthy meal.  I heard a program a few years ago about Read and Feed through the Cary Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.  I am so proud to be part of the Lochmere Community and to see this type of opportunity going on in the summer.  I hope all of my Lochmere neighbors will participate in this wonderful Christmas in July fundraiser for Read and Feed!

Summer Camp Lunch

Summer camp has always had a special place in my heart.  I grew up going to summer camp, worked at a summer camp in college and I look forward to the days when my kids can go to summer camp.

Chick-fil-a for The Corral

A few months ago I had the joy of getting to know the wonderful girls and leaders of The Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC.  I’ve been able to participate in several events with them and I look forward to working with them and the girls for years to come.  The Corral has their summer camp going on for the last two weeks of July and they are looking for local businesses & organizations to help provide lunch to the girls.  I jumped at this opportunity and teamed up with Rob Dyer and Diane Curfman of Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for a co-sponsored lunch.  I went by Chick-fil-a Waverly Place on Monday and they loaded my car up with boxed lunches for 20 girls/volunteers!  The boxed lunches included a hot Chick-fil-a sandwich, bag of chips, a delicious cookie and a fresh cup of fruit.  I also took two jugs of their famous sweet tea!

The Corral girls summer camp

The girls were still working on their morning sessions when I arrived (learning the parts of the horse, working on care & maintenance of horses, etc.) so I took some time to walk around the farm and watch the girls in action.  What a wonderful summer camp opportunity for these girls and they were all having so much fun.   We had lunch together inside, WHEW, it was a hot day!  The girls then spent the rest of the afternoon doing chores on the farm and having small group sessions.  They were all very appreciative of lunch and I can’t thank Rob, Diane and the whole team of Chick-fil-a Waverly Place enough for their support of The Corral.  If your business or organization would like to work with The Corral or provide lunch to the girls one day this summer, reach out to them soon as the days are filling up fast!

“ON TARGET” for All

Chamber Friends

The Cary Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Planning Conference in late July at the lovely Mid Pines Resort in Southern Pines, NC.  The Cary Chamber theme for 2012-2013 year is “ON TARGET”.  That means that the CC is really focusing in on the important things that make the CC great…BUSINESS SERVICES, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION, GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS…and of course, MEMBERSHIP!  The planning conference was a 1-night, 2-day retreat and included tons of great speakers, presentations, break-out sessions, and panels.

Breakout Sessions

I thoroughly enjoyed myself again this year and I am always honored to be included.  This year I will be serving the CC as Vice-Chair for Membership Services and will hold a position on the Executive Board.  I arrived early on Thursday morning to attend the Board of Directors Meeting and checked into my room shortly after our meeting was over.  The conference officially kicked off at noon with an overview luncheon that included comments from Kathy Burns (Conference Chair/Chair Elect), Gale Adcock (Mayor Pro Tem, Town of Cary), and Mark Vitner (Managing Director & Senior Economist Wells Fargo Bank). Kathy announced the 2012-2013 theme, “ON TARGET” and said she was looking forward to a good year with the Chamber.  The afternoon sessions included an update from Town of Cary Leaders about the Cary “Community Plan”.  For this session we broke into small groups and had to answer a common question “What are Cary’s greatest assets and where do you see opportunity”.  This was a fun exercise and I enjoyed brainstorming about where we think Cary could grow and develop in the future years to come.

Meet the Candidates

We also heard a Downtown Cary Update from Ed Gawf, Town of Cary Director of Downtown Development.  I always enjoy hearing Ed Gawf speak as I am a big advocate for downtown Cary development being ‘on target’ and I can’t wait to one day see the final product!  Little by little we are getting there.  The final afternoon programs included “Wake County Update”- by David Cooke (Wake County Manager) and Paul Coble (Chair-Wake County Commissioners), Wake Technical Community College Bond Referendum by Dr. Stephen Scott (Wake Technical Community College), and “It’s a Wrap” by Ted Abernathy (Southern Growth Policies Board).

Ted Abernathy was very informative and shared his insight as to what people around the country “are talking about” 1) Manufacturing Jobs coming BACK to the USA, 2) Higher Education and return to reform for the education system and 3) Shrinking Government (Federal, State and Local).  We enjoyed a brief break before reception/dinner and a delightful keynote speaker from the USGA 2014 U.S. Open that will be held over a two week period at Pinehurst (it will be a record setting event!!!)  Unfortunately, the Evening Putting Challenge was canceled due to heavy storms, lighting and torrential rain outside!  On Friday we continued the conference with an early morning “Meet the Candidates” from NC House and Senate, right “on target” for the up-coming November elections!  Next up was Joe Milazzo, II (Regional Transportation Alliance) and then Tom Huff, CC Chair, gave an overview for the for the Cary Chamber 2011-2012 year.

"On Target" with Member Services

I am always amazed at how much the CC does in one years time!  The CC ended with an introduction of the Vice Chairs where we held breakout work sessions and brainstormed with our committee members about the Programs of Work for the coming year.  I had a wonderful team and we came up with a whole list of new ideas, thoughts, opportunities, and suggestions that we want to investigate for future development.  The planning conference concluded with the Annual Golf Tournament, and I’m sure all of their golf strokes were “ON TARGET”.  Sponsors for the Planning Conference included:  WakeMed Cary Hospital, Preston Development Company, Ellis & Winters LLP, REX UNC Health Care, BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina, Patriot State Bank, Carolina Hurricanes and Burns & Bynum, CPA PA.  And MANY congrats to Howard & Delancy and the entire Cary Chamber staff for ALL of their hard work and commitment to making our chamber so great!!!!  Let’s be ON TARGET together for 2012-2013!

Beach Update for Summer 2012

Ahhhh…summertime!  HOT WEATHER here in the Carolinas and that also means SMITH FAMILY BEACH VACATION WEEK!  It’s a week that we all look forward to each year.  We close the entire Smith & Smith, CPA office, load up our cars until there is NO ROOM LEFT AT ALL and head down to the lovely and oh-so-busy Myrtle Beach!  We had a wonderful time this year and totally outstanding weather!  So here is our Smith & Smith, CPA BEACH UPDATE!

Beach Update on Lodging: Seems like we go back and forth from year to year on renting either a condo or a beach house…both have their positive and negatives, but regardless of where we stay, it HAS to be ON THE BEACH

Dinner at Captain Benjamin’s

That’s what Bob likes, so that is what we get.  Sharon uses Elliott Beach Rental to book our place and this year we stayed at a house in North Myrtle Beach (Cherry Grove area).  The house was nice, right on the beach and had plenty of room, plus a HUGE deck on the back.  There were 15 of us total and the entire week included beach, beach and more beach!

Beach Update on Food: One of the highlights of the week is getting the whole family together (that includes the grandparents who live in Myrtle Beach) for dinner at a local seafood buffet.  We ate at Captain Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood, located right in the heart of Myrtle Beach.  Captain Benjamin’s is a favorite for us because it has a HUGE downstairs playroom area for the kids; which includes a fishing boat, play-kitchen, books, games, boys, puzzles, etc.  We were lucky this year in that we didn’t have to wait to be seated, but we still took all of the kids downstairs to play after we ate.  The crab legs are a favorite of Blake’s and we are usually so full by the time that we leave that walking to the car is a chore!

Cathy Gillian Thacker Harlequin author

Beach Update on Weather: I think this was by far one of the best weather weeks at the beach ever.  I took some books with me to read and included one of my new favorite local authors, Cathy Gillen Thacker.  I am very good friends with Cathy’s daughter, Sarah (owner of Thacker Law Firm) and was ecstatic to learn that Cathy was a writer/author for Harlequin novels!  Cathy was gracious enough to sign some books for me and I finally got to dive in and really read some of them while at the beach!

Beach Update...Italian Ice time!

All of the cousins had a great time playing together on the beach and little Mark even took a snack break for some delicious Italian Ice from the North Myrtle Beach, Beach Services snack cart.

Beach Update on FUN STUFF: We ended the week with dinner at The Shack Restaurant in Cherry Grove, a round of miniature golf at The Black Pearl (a great PIRATE themed course….GO ECU PIRATES!!!) and a trip down to Broadway at the Beach to enjoy the Pavilion Nostalgia Park.  The classic collection of amusement rides is a flash-back-in-time for our family as they bring back memories of the ‘good ole’ days’ for Bob.   The kids had a great time riding everything from the motorcycles, to the tipping whales, teacups, swinging pirate ship and racecars.  Some of the amusement rides and attractions date back to 1912!  They’ve done a wonderful job at preserving the Pavilion rides, plus Broadway at the Beach is always fun to visit!  So that’s it for our Beach Update!

Pavilion Nostalgia Park

Thank you to all of our wonderful clients of Smith & Smith, CPA.  We greatly appreciate your business and loyalty to our practice.  Thank you for understanding that taking a week off for vacation is a valuable part of our family practice.  A family that works together, also lives, plays and vacations together!  So here’s till our next beach update
