Cornhole Tournament in Raleigh

Cornhole Tournament

Blake recently had the opportunity to participate in a cornhole tournament.  The Triangle Breakfast Club hosted the 3rd Annual Capital Cornhole Tournament Classic in Downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street at Isaac Hunter’s Oak City Tavern on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012.  The event benefited BackPack Buddies, an organization that is supported by the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a program that provides children of low-income families healthy meals on the weekend.  I’ve actually done some volunteer work for BackPack Buddies through my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and the work of this organization is amazing!  Blake signed up to play with his friend, Travis Winter, Account Executive, for Insurance Service Center (Blake and Travis are in a local BNI group together).

Fayetteville Street in Raleigh

Blake and Travis made it to the “Sweet Sixteen” and then lost with a tough score of 21-19.  The weather was awesome and they both had a great time playing in their first ever ‘official’ cornhole tournament!  Thanks to Chad Griffith of The Preferred Client Group (member of the Triangle Breakfast Club and the same BNI group at Blake & Travis) for getting the guys involved!  I’m hoping to find a partner so I can play next year!

Cool Shirt

Blake got a cool new nice green t-shirt for playing, he loves it and I have a feeling that it is going to be his new ‘go-to-shirt’ for the summer.

Pig Pickin’ in Cary, North Carolina

Have you ever been to a Pig Pickin’ ? It’s a term that I myself wasn’t really familiar with…until my family moved to Eastern NC back in the early 1990’s.

Pig Pickin'

I remember going to my first pig pickin’ with a friend in middle school and there the pig was…laid out and cut open on the cooker. It was a sight to see and the next thing I knew “pig pickin’” was part of my vocabulary and in my 19+ years of living in North Carolina, I’ve lost coount of how many pig pickin’s I’ve attended! Over the weekend my Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, celebrated our 26th Annual Pig Pickin’  in the Park! The proceeds from this event benefit the James Atkins Memorial Scholarship and Humanitarian Fund. Our entire family always attends the Pig Pickin’ and it is such a wonderful & fun time! The weather was beautiful so we had games & tables set-up in the courtyard area (it was held at the Senior Center at Bond Park ).

Leapfrog Landcare Family

Our Entertainment Committee did a great job of getting activities there for the kids (face painting, clown with balloon art, games, and the local fire department brought a huge fire truck for the kids to see and climb on). Check out this picture of one of our sponsors (Greg Harris of Leapfrog Landcare) as his kids enjoy the fire truck! This was my year to be in charge of the pig pickin’, or be the “Head Pig” as I like to call it. It’s amazing after 26 years of how well this event runs! For about 3-months before the event our entire club works hard to contact sponsors (to bring in new ones and to keep our previous year sponsors onboard again too). On the day of the pig pickin’, everyone shows up to get things set-up and organized. It’s a well-oiled machine for sure!  We also run a bake sale that shows off the cooking talents of our many of our club members (and their family/spouses…Jenn Rossi…your desserts just keep getting better and better each year!!!) We have a live local bluegrass band that plays and we give away tons of really cool door prizes that have been donated by the community! In my opinion, it’s the BEST pig pickin’ in the area!

Family & Friends

Smith & Smith, CPA is always a sponsor for the pig pickin’ and I was happy to have several other of our clients support as sponsors too. One of my new sponsors this year was Aquinas Leadership Group. Matthew Yesko (of Aquinas) attended the event with his family & friends and had a great time! We also invited Travis Winter & family to attend as well. I can’t say THANK YOU ENOUGH to all of our sponsors, club members, families and COMMUNITY for keeping this event going strong each year!

I’d also like to give a shout-out to Travelhost Magazine of the Triangle!

I know one of the owners, Lynn Shaw, through mutual friends and the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch. Travelhost has been around since 1967 and is now serving The Triangle Area! It’s a great resource for finding things to do in the area (when you have company come in town or even for your own family). I highly recommend their site! Check them out when you get time! They ran an online social media contest on Facebook and I was the lucky winner of a gift card to Charlie Goodnight’s Comedy Club (one of our favorite places to go!) Social media is an excellent way for companies like Travelhost Magazine of the Triangle to generate interest and buildup their brand name. I look forward to a good evening of comedy soon. Thanks Travelhost Magazine of the Triangle!

The Cary Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Membership Golf Tourney in early June.  Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to be a hold sponsor again this year, so we sent our team of four players out to play.

Smith & Smith, CPA golf team

The weather was totally perfect for a day of golf and the guys had a great time!  Our team this year consisted of: Blake & Cam Smith (from Smith & Smith, CPA), Chris Duff (owner of Duff’s Design & Landscaping) and Travis Winter (Account Executive for Insurance Service Center).  Our team didn’t win, would have been a HUGE SURPRISE if they had, but it’s still nice to slip out of the office for a few hours and spend the day on the golf course.  Thanks to the Cary Chamber for another fun member golf tourney!

Ocean Isle, NC

Blake and I were invited by a close business-referral partner to join him and his family/friends at the beach for a few days.  We were able to work it out to where we could join them at Ocean Isle, NC for two days in mid-June.  We had a nice time, despite the rainy-weather, and the house was HUGE, beautiful and full of kids!  We had 13 kids, 3 nannies and 8 adults in the house, and surprisingly, there was still plenty of room for more!  The weather did clear up a bit for us to venture down to the beach in the evenings.  I love this picture of Mark, taken by the pool at the house.

WBON of Cary was proud to contribute groceries and nonperishable goods to help stock the “summer pantry” for The CORRAL Riding Academy.  Thanks to all of the ladies who helped bring items on the list.  The backend of my car was FULL as I delivered the goods to the farm on Wednesday after the meeting.  Way to go WBON of Cary!  The girls of The CORRAL will have a wonderful summer!

Building for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Members

Want to know a great way to spend a Friday morning?  Working with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County!  The Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club gathered a group of volunteers for a morning of hammering, installing windows, caulking, cutting and roofing to help build a house in Raleigh, NC.  Habitat for Humanity of Wake County is currently building eight homes in this neighborhood.  Everyday different volunteer groups sign-up and show-up to help build the homes.  You don’t have to be an expert homebuilder to participate.

Habitat of Humanity of Wake County homes

There is a construction site manager assigned to each project and they are there to help along the way (also volunteers there too in charge of each house).  It’s a really well organized and run machine!  Blake went along with me (to help represent Smith & Smith, CPA).  Our club also had some of the boys from the Boys & Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw go with us to help build (they are in town for the Summer Enrichment Program).  This was a really fun project and we look forward to future events of volunteering with them again soon!  See the pictures below of us working!  Our main duties involved installing windows on the house.  Some people were on the roof doing shingles, but I kept my two feet on the floor!  Thank goodness for hardhats too (yes mom, I wore a hardhat, but it was yellow and ONLY because they didn’t have any pink ones!)

Networking in Raleigh with Deb Yow of NCSU

June was a special month for the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch (one of the best events for networking in Raleigh).  Deb Yow, Director of Athletics for North Carolina State University, was the guest speaker, and she really packed the house with a crowd of 130+ ladies (and a few gentlemen).

Becca, Linda, Deb Yow & Carrie Peele

Yow was hired in June 2010 and has been working on her plan called “Wolfpack Unlimited” ever since.  I enjoyed hearing Yow speak again; I had the privilege of introducing her earlier this year when she spoke at the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women Luncheon.  I’ll recap some of her points that I found to be the most engaging/impressive.  She talked about the ‘issue of life’ always coming at unexpected times and that we have to be ready and willing to take on new challenges, even if that means embarrassing ourselves at times.  She talked about her sisters and their success and struggles and how they made it through some tough times by really encouraging each other.

She said that there is no ‘helicopter in life’, no one is going to land you on top of the mountain…you have to work hard and get there yourself.  Her favorite bumper sticker that she saw recently said, “Now that I’ve given up hope, I feel much better”.  Oddly how there is a lot of truth in that…   She shared with the ladies some of her past coaching stories and talked about having confidence in yourself, and not to let our second thoughts stop us from achieving our dreams.   I was really inspired by Deb Yow and I’m sure all of the other ladies in the room were too.

Networking in Raleigh

I enjoyed meeting several new ladies at the luncheon.  Amanda Robbins, Sales Manager for Acroprint and Morgan Southerland, Assistant Vice President/Sales Manager of Harrington Bank, both stopped by my booth to say hello.  This was their first time attending this networking in Raleigh event.   I was also introduced to Erin Cohen, Owner of Entrées 4 U. Thank you ladies and I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

CPA Inauguration 2012

This past week was an event that we’ve been looking forward to for a really long time.  Blake was invited to attend The North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants 2012 CPA Inauguration

Blake’s CPA Inauguration

This is the official ceremony that welcomes and inducts new CPA’s in North Carolina. The event was held at the lovely and majestic Grandover Resort & Conference Center in Greensboro, NC.   Blake and I were sooooooo excited to attend his CPA Inauguration, this is something that has been a LONG time coming for Blake!  It was wonderful to be able to attend and celebrate this special ceremony together.  J.A. Lesemann, Jr., made the opening remarks (he is a CPA, and is serving as the 2012-2013 Chair North Carolina Association of CPAs).  The Recognition of New CPA’s was presented by Bucky Glover, CPA, from the North Carolina State Board of CPA ExaminersNorth Carolina Attorney General, Roy A. Cooper, administrated the Oath of a North Carolina Certified Public Accountant.  Our dinner table included two other CPA recipients and their family members, and also a member of the NCACPA Board of Directors.  We had a fabulous time at dinner sharing stories and talking with our new friends.  There was a little bit of ‘tax & number’ talk at the table, but that can be expected with a room full of CPAs!

Following the CPA Inauguration ceremony, there was a group picture taken in the foyer lobby (I’ll have it posted later).  There were a total of 98 CPA Inauguration honorees present at the dinner and two of them received a special honor for scoring a 95.5 or higher on ALL FOUR PARTS of the CPA exam!  That is so impressive and congrats to them & their families!  Honorees were from all over the state of North Carolina; from as far west at Asheville and from as far east as Wilmington.

Congrats Blake!!!!

It was a wonderful night of celebration, becoming a CPA is something that does NOT come easy and takes hours of studying, dedication and patient!  Here are a few stats for you (to reinforce the difficulty of this exam). Between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011 the NC State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners received 4, 399 applications for the Uniform CPA Examination…3,584 of those were approved to take the exam AND between that same time period the Board issued 534 original CPA licenses (info from the Activity Review of the NC State Board of CPA examiners No. 09-2011 issue)  This is not an exam to mess around with!

So a BIG congrats again to Blake!  So proud of you!  We were able to stay the night at the Grandover Resort…highly encourage you to visit if you never have!  And congrats to all of the 2012 CPA Inauguration Honorees!

 Happy weekend!!!!!

Zip Line in Fayetteville, NC

I had the opportunity to experience something really cool over the weekend.  I went on the zip line in Fayetteville, NC with my long-time friend and high school bestie, Jessica Lang (Jessica is a CPA).

Zip Line in Fayetteville, NC

Late last year she saw the deal on Groupon for the Zip line in Fayetteville, NC (where she lives and works) and asked me if I would like to go with her.  Of course I wanted to go!  It would be a chance to see her and hangout (literally) and also the opportunity to experience this much talked about zip line in Fayetteville, NC! The official name is ZipQuest Waterfall & Treetop Adventure and has only been open for about two years! The family that owns the 55 acres that includes Carver’s Falls, began looking for the best zip line contractor in 2009 and hired a company out of Michigan.   What they ended up creating is now a world-class zip line canopy tour and nature adventure that is located at Carver’s Falls (North Carolina’s Sandhills only major waterfall).

Carver's Falls

During the adventure, we got to experience 16 tree platforms (wayyy up there!!!) 8 amazing zip lines of all different lengths & heights, 3 canopy bridges, and 3 spiral tree staircases.  I was so excited to go on this adventure with Jessica, the reviews on TripAdvisor speak really highly (no pun intended) of the experience and it was named one of USA Today’s 10 Great Zip Lines!  Our guides were very knowledgeable and made sure that safety was a top priority.  I felt safe and secure the whole time.  The guides also shared about how the zip line was built (very few trees were cut down) and the course is inspected each year and adjustments are made so that the trees can continue to grow and flourish.

Zip Line Friends

I think this adventure could be a little challenging if you are afraid of heights. Some of the zip lines were short and fast while others were longer and allowed you time to look around and really take in the beautiful scenery.   The course took us about 2 hours to complete (we were told to allow 2.5 hours) and fully embraces the meaning of eco-tourism.  I really enjoyed spending the day with Jessica and I can’t wait to take Blake on this too! Check out my cool video below, I made it while zipping through on the 7th zip line.

T-Ball and Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza

Networking slows down a little bit in the summer months, so it gives me a chance to blog about some other cool things in town.  We just finished our first season of playing sports with the Town of Cary T-Ball league

Town of Cary T-Ball

Trent was old enough to play and really had a fantastic time!  The whole T-ball league for the Town of Cary is sponsored by all of the local Rotary Clubs, which I think is really cool since I’m a Rotarian!  Trent was on the LA Dodgers Team and had a nice t-ball shirt with the Rotary Wheel on the front in blue.  Once kids get out of the t-ball league and start playing coach-pitch they ask for local businesses to sponsor the teams.  We are looking forward to Smith & Smith, CPA being a team sponsor in a few more years!

Coach John & Trent

We really enjoyed the whole season and Trent was on a fantastic team!  Most of the games were played at Ritter Park & Lexie Lane Park in Cary.  He had a few weeks of practice early on in the season, and then pretty much just games towards the end.  The LA Dodgers had their end of season party at the Durham Bulls Park this past Sunday.  It was a HOT one, but they had such a fun time!  They each got a nice trophy from Coach John with their name on it, Trent was ecstatic and took it for show-and-tell this week at pre-school

Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza

We celebrated Trent’s last game with our family by going to Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza in Cary.  I just read that they are changing the name to Camos Brothers Pizza, but it will always be Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza to us…mainly because it is really fun to say!  My mother-in-law LOVES their BIG NY Style pizza, check out this HUGE slice as Mark tackles it!!  Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza is located in a shopping center near our house, so it is very convenient and shares an outside courtyard area with El Cero Mexican Restaurant.  On any given night, the courtyard is full of kids and families, making it easy to see why so many people love it!  Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza also has a few video games inside, so on rainy days (like the one last week) the kids are still pretty entertained inside.   Fuhgeddaboudit Pizza on Urbanspoon
