Blood and Hockey

VIP Blood Donor

Cam is a regular blood donor for the American Red Cross here in Cary.  They have him on a schedule for donating and he goes every 6-8 weeks.  Cam has been a regular donor for several years now and recently received a nice package in the mail from the ARC.  Inside was a nice blue t-shirt that says HERO on the front, and included a shirt pin and a nice ink pen (since we are a CPA office, we always love to find a good pen that writes smooth and this one is a keeper!)  The package recognized Cam as being a VIP blood donor.  Because of Cam’s work & study schedule, he doesn’t get to attend very many community events, so being a loyal blood donor is one of his ways of contributing to our community.  Nice work Cam!

I am always pleasantly surprised as how life can create your path to cross with others and then it turns out you had a common thread all along!  This recently happened to me with two work friends, both of which have the lovely name of Sarah.

Sarah, Sarah & Becca at the Canes Hockey Game

My high school best friend, Jessica Lang, attended college at UNC and roomed with a sweet girl named Sarah Cooper.  Years later Sarah was starting a pet photography business (how cool is that!?!? And she is very good at her work! Click HERE for her website) and she was looking for a CPA firm, so Jessica recommended us (Smith & Smith, CPA).  I liked Sarah Cooper instantly and she’s been a client for about a year or so now.   Now here is how the other Sarah, Sarah Thacker (owner of  Thacker Law Firm) comes into play.  Our CPA firm is a sponsor for a well known ladies networking luncheon (Triangle Ladies Power Lunch) and as a Corporate Sponsor, I get to put a marketing item into the goodie bags each month.  Last year I included a magnet in the goodie bags. Sarah Thacker was at one of the lunches and put the magnet on her fridge at work.  Later on, she was getting some pet photographs made by Sarah Cooper (of her sweet doggies) and that is then that Sarah Cooper noticed the magnet on Thacker’s fridge and exclaimed that we were her CPA.  From there, I was introduced to Thacker and the rest is friendship history!  Sarah is an excellent attorney and we’ve shared many client referrals over the past year.  I recently attended a Carolina Hurricanes Hockey game with the ‘Sarahs’ and we had a wonderful time!  I love how life can make paths cross in the most unique ways!

WOW!  The days are busy with lots of tax appointments/drop-offs and phone calls!   We are still accepting new monthly business clients.  Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary is never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  Please note that the months of Jan-April 2012 will be very busy around here and we’ll be working 7-days a week with 12-15+hour days to get everyone taken care of in a timely manner.  Please get your 2011 taxes in as soon as you can.  I’d also love to have a few new reviews posted for us under the name business name, Smith & Smith, CPA on Google.  Please click HERE to write a review (click the RED box that says “Write a Review“)  Thanks so much!   Visit our website: http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ for more information.

Jitters-Best Coffee in Cary, NC!

coffee in Cary
Jitters Coffee in Cary

Are you looking for a great cup of coffee in Cary in the morning?  But too busy to drag yourself out of the car and up to the cashier?  Then let me HIGHLY recommend Jitters Coffee in Cary!  This place is so cool and you don’t even have to get out of the car!  Jitters is a stand-alone drive-thru coffee shop that brews & makes its own signature drinks (always better to shop LOCAL and support small business owner then the big chains!).

William and Becca at the window

My good friend and client, Jud Patterson, is the new owner of Jitters.  Jud is one of those creative guys that is always brainstorming with great ideas.   I’ve known Jud for a long time, we met through a BNI networking group and have been active in the Cary Chamber as friends for many, many, many years!   I went by the other morning to get a delicious cup of coffee and Jud’s son, William, who was working the window, and Becca, who was the barista on duty, warmly greeted me.  My coffee was perfectly brewed, nice and hot and tasted soooo good!  Business is going well for them as there was a car in front of me when I got there and several more behind me in line.  Jitters also has a variety of cool glassware and mugs that Jud makes and designs that are for sale at the shop.   Stop by and see William, Becca and Jud, tell them Becca Smith sent you and enjoy a cup of the best coffee in Cary!

Happy Friday!  The guys will be working this weekend…tis tax season you know!

Raleigh Wrought Iron and Silvia Salon

Custom Fence

We love to celebrate with our clients when they have new and exciting things happening in their business!  I’d like to highlight two clients (who happen to be married) and promote their recent success!  The first is Raleigh Wrought Iron and Fence Co.  The owner is Stelian Popa and he is a true master of his trade!  Stelian is originally from Romania and is a blacksmith-fabricator by trade.

Custom Wine Rack

His work is phenomenal!  He can literally built/create ANYTHING for his clients with iron & steel.  His artistic designs are unlimited and everything is done to the highest standard.  Stelian creates custom wrought iron railings, gates, balconies, fences and custom wrought iron art (wine racks, security bars, ornamental mail boxes, window baskets, baker racks, iron furniture, etc.)  The possibilities are unlimited!  What I like best about Stelian is that he has taken his talent full force into the social media world!

Iron Curtain

Raleigh Wrought Iron is on Facebook and he has TONS of videos on Youtube!  The Youtube videos are great as they really capture all of the quality and talent that Stelian puts into his work.  Some of his videos have close to 10,000 views!  (See the one below).  Stelian has been  a business owner for over 15 years.

Stelian’s wife, Silvia, of Silvia Hair Designs, has been a client for many years and recently moved her salon to a new location in Cary.  I am a regular client of Silvia’s (LOVE going to see her!!!) and her new space looks great!  She is located at 1151 Kildaire Farm Road, Suite 116 (right down from her previous location, across form Goodberry’s Ice Cream, Hibernian Pub and Carrabba’s Italian Grill).

Silvia Salon

Her new salon space is nice and clean, open and airy and gives her plenty of room to grow and nice privacy for her clients.  Siliva keeps up-to-date on the newest trends/styles/treatments for hair care and attends hair shows all across the country.  She offers the Keratin Complex treatment at her salon, along with the exclusive line of L’Anza products and the Featherlocks feather hair extensions

Congrats to this husband and wife entrepreneur team!  They are proof that dreams of being business owners can be made possible!

Busy busy busy around here at Smith & Smith, CPA!  The schedule is filling up quickly with tax appointments and we are working to get everyone in and out on a timely manner.

My 100th Blog Post!  And Great Parties around town

Great Harvest Bread gift

I have some great parties around town to tell you about in this blog, but first of all…HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY 2012!  I know it is cheesy to some, but I really, really, really do love Valentine’s Day!  Always have since I was a child and guess I always will, even as an adult.  My boys will have their Valentine’s Day party this afternoon at their pre-school and I used Great Harvest Bread of Cary (thanks so much to Tom & Paige and their team at the GHB in Cary!!!) for my teacher gifts!  BEST way to give a nice gift ever!  I’ve known Paige for YEARS and I just call her up, tell her what I need and what my budget is and she does the rest!  Bakes, wraps, ribbons, label and I just have to write the names.  LIFE SAVER!  Here are the boys last night with the loaves of bread and goodie bags for the teachers. I was getting ready to load them up to deliver!

I also wanted to celebrate in this blog because this is a very special blog!  It is my 100th blog post!!!!!  Crazy I know!  I haven’t even been blogging for a full year yet (will be a year in late June) and I’m totally loving it!  As you know, I’ve used this blog to really promote events around town, to celebrate our client’s success and to talk about our client’s achievements & marketing.  It has been huge for us here at Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary and I occasionally include some good CPA/Tax/Accounting tips/info too, but a blog all about taxes wouldn’t be much fun.  And speical thanks again and again to Eric Green of Eric Green Marketing who helped me get this blog up and going months ago!

Now, I want to tell you about some GREAT parties around town!  These events/parties are coming up in the next couple of weeks (some are just days away) so you MUST act fast to attend!   These are parties around town that are celebrating and supporting all kinds of different causes/organizations.  The FIRST party is this coming Friday night, February 17th 2012 and it is the Moon Over Midtown party.  This is the FIRST year for this party (put on by Deborah Meehan and the Wild Wacky & Wonderful Women of the World, also known as the W3er’s) This party is a fundraiser that will support Triangle Family Services.  Deborah & her friends put on fabulous parties, so I know this one will be great as well!

Parties around town, Mardi Gras!

Coming up next is the Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras event, hosted by Cary MacGregory Rotary Club and Life Experiences.  This will be held on Tuesday, February 21st at The Atrium on Regency Parkway in Cary.  Proceeds from this event (which also includes a band & auction items-just like the Moon Over Midtown party) will benefit philanthropic projects throughout the year for Cary Macgregor Rotary Club and Life Experiences.  Blake and I attended this party last year and had a total blast!

Parties Around Town, Fiat Fiesta!

The other two parties around town will take place in early March.  Thursday, March 1st will be the Cary Chamber of Commerce 2012 Auction & Car Raffle at the lovely Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.  This year it is “A Fiat Fiesta!” with the reverse car raffle being a Ford Fiat!  This is the Cary Chamber’s biggest party of the year, draws 300-500 people and includes food, live & silent auction, networking and fellowship.  Proceeds from this event support the Cary Chamber with their business projects and community work throughout the year.  Smith & Smith, CPA is a big supporter of this event, we go each year and also donate several auction items and Blake & I purchase the $100 reverse car raffle tickets.  Let me know if you are interested in a car ticket, I have several to sell, they only sell 500 and it gets you and a guest into the event that night.

Raleigh Brides Ball 2012

The final party I want to include in this list of parties around town is going to be held on Friday, March 9th.  This is the Raleigh Brides Ball and will be held at the Raleigh Marriott City Center, starting at 4pm with the Bridal Vendors and kicking off big time at 8pm with the plated dinner in the ballroom, followed by another fabulous silent auction & door prize giveaways.  This event focus is to help raise awareness and fund for cervical cancer research in support of the National Cervical Caner Coalition. My good friend, Patricia Gregory is the area Chapter President.  Patricia has been working so hard for over a year to bring this event to the Triangle!  I can’t wait to go!  The event is formal attire and women are invited to wear their bridal gowns!  I have a few more weeks to make sure mine from nearly 7-years ago (and two babies) can zip!

So as you can see, lots of great parties around town in the next few weeks!  Hopefully you are going to attend some (or all) and will be generous with your funds in buying tickets and winning auction prizes.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch was full of purple, purple and more purple for the month of February!  The award-winning businesswoman speaker, Olalah Njenga, spoke on February 15, 2012 to a room full of friends, colleagues and successful professional women.  Olalah’s presence helped to pack the meeting room at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh, as we were all anxious to hear her speak on her message called “The Power of One”.  Olalah shared some touching life-stories that have happened between her and her daughter over the years.  She stressed the importance of being able to accept the truth from others and being ‘kind to your future self’

Olalah and Becca

I really enjoyed hearing Olalah speak, she looked so lovely in her purple dress and her energy from the podium was contagious.  Olalah is part of the YellowWood Group and is based out of Raleigh, NC.

The shopping hour, which is a vital part of the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, was full of fascinating vendors, everything a lady could want from jewelry to purses, wine and nutrition supplements.  There was also a nice variation of business services including banking, promotional products and of course, accounting/tax (Smith & Smith, CPA of Cary!)  Our CPA firm has been a sponsor of this lunch from nearly the beginning and we see so much value and opportunity each month through our participation.

Olalah, Leslie and Alice

We missed Carrie Peele this month (she was attending a national limo convention) but our dear and wonderful friend, Deborah Meehan, ran things smoothly from the podium.  Our VIP table was full of wonderful ladies: Dena Morris of Dena’s Jewelry Box, Christine Hall of CMH College Consulting, Rhonda Tweedy of Duff’s Design and Landscaping, Sherie Samstag-Bryan of New York Life, and Kathleen Volandt of Auroros.  I also enjoyed seeing several other fabulous ladies during the shopping hour and after the luncheon.  March 21st is the next TLPL with Beth Wood, State Auditor for North Carolina!.

 Local to Global

WomenNC.org

The WomenNC.org hosted their NC University Women Featured at the United Nations Presentation Dinner Forum on Thursday, February 16th 2012 at the NC State University Club in Raleigh, NC.  This was a highly anticipated dinner by many in our area and around 200 people attended the evening event (despite the crazy weather and heavy rain that made the arrival/check-in and parking a challenge!).  WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) was a proud event sponsor and we had several ladies from our group at the event.  We were pleased to be part of such an amazing event and it is impressive to see the WomenNC.org work so hard to help take local issues to a global level.   As an event sponsor, WBON had a nice booth display in the welcome lobby and our booth was inviting with a candy buffet of assorted yummy treats.  We had the opportunity to tell everyone who stopped by about WBON and promoted our upcoming Annual Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser (March 14th2012) as well as our scholarship program that is offering $4,400 in scholarships this year to Wake County female business owners!  It was very exciting to see the young women recipients of the of WomenNC 2012 CSW Fellow program.

CSW Fellows Dinner

They were so proud to have their families and friends there to support them.  One dad was there all the way from Minnesota to support his lovely daughter.  Anita Sivakumar (WomenNC President) started the evening off with a warm welcome and introduced Tamara Gibbs (WTVD ABC Eyewitness News Team) as the evening emcee.  Tamara introduced each of the CSW Fellows, and they took turns presenting their topics/findings to the crowd.  The girls will be traveling to the United Nations 56th Annual “Commission on the Status of Women” in NYC where they will represent North Carolina and present their research in a panel presentation as well as take part in dozens of conference sessions.  They will also have the opportunity to interact with people from over 200+ countries and 400 NGO’s.  After their trip, they will continue to present and share their findings with universities, non-profits and public forums all across the state of North Carolina.

WBON Booth for WomenNC.org

WBON of Cary was proudly represented by Becca Smith (current WBON President and Direct of Marketing for Smith & Smith, CPA), Ruth Drum (IT Chair for WBON and representing Crossroads Business Center), Autumn LaBarca (Fundraising Co-Chair for WBON and Sales & Marketing Director for Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary), Annie Cook (WBON member and owner of Koko FitClub of Cary), Barbara Petty (former WBON member and owner of BOOM! Magazine) and Becca Thomas (friend of WBON and of Moe’s Catering in Cary).

Heart Month for Cary Chamber Business of Women

Autumn & Dr. Balaravi for Heart Month

February is known as being “Heart Month” so the Cary Chamber of Commerce invited Dr. Bhavani Balaravi, MD, F.A.C.C. of Raleigh Cardiology to be the guest speaker for their February Business of Women Luncheon. Dr. Balaravi presented a nice slideshow of helpful heart month information to the ladies in the room and educated us on the factors/risks/prevention of heart disease. She is board certified in nuclear cardiology and completed advanced fellowships in nuclear cardiology and cardiac imaging (MRI & CT) at the Mayo Clinic. I sat with a nice table of ladies: Tamara Guilford, RN of 3HC, Suzan McCann and Jennifer McNeil of The Mannor Village, Autumn LaBarca of Doctors Express Urgent Care and my newest friend, Donna Cook, Executive Director of Heartfields Assisted Living at Cary. The Cary Chamber Business of Women is a monthly luncheon hosted at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, NC.

Hand & Stone Massage in Raleigh

Massage in Raleigh

I was traveling through North Raleigh last week and decided to stop by and visit with one of our business clients.  I’m not in that area very much, so this was a rare treat for me.  I went by to visit with Chris Parks, the owner of Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, the best place to get a massage in Raleigh!  Chris was referred to Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary in 2011 when he was looking to open the spa and we formed a good business relationship (those referral partners are so important!!)  Hand & Stone Massage in Raleigh is located in the Falls Village Shopping Center and the location is ideal with lots of parking and easy in & out.  Chris gave me a tour of the new facility and it is very beautiful inside.  I instantly felt calm and relaxed, a nice change of pace from the busy-busy-go-go of life! They have several private massage and facial rooms as well as a couples massage room (nice treat for those looking to spend some quality relaxing time with a loved one).  Chris is very proud of his business and it shows with the caring staff he has hired and their attention to detail with each client.

Hand & Stone Massage in Raleigh

Their massage services are provided by North Carolina licensed massage and body work therapists.  They offer a one-hour massage starting at $49.95, hot stone massage at $69.95 and signature facial (my favorite) at $49.95.  One really cool thing about their website is the tool that says “Which Massage Facial is Right for You”, it takes you to a list of the services offered and does a short description, that way you can really find that one that will make you feel & look your best!  Looking for a great massage in Raleigh…check out Hand & Stone!

Carolina Parent Camp &  Education Fair 2012

Becca, Mr. Wuf & Craig

Last weekend I was so happy to help volunteer to work at the Carolina Parent Magazine Camp & Education Fair .  This is an annual event for Carolina Parent Magazine, which was held at Cary Academy and sponsored by Cary Academy Summer Quest and Triangle Orthopedics Associates, P.A.   I had contacted Craig Bell, Director for Holston Presbytery Camp & Retreat Center, (HPC) to see if he was interested in participating in this event.  Holston Camp is located in the lovely mountains of Banner Elk, NC and is the summer camp where I went as a child, worked as a young adult in college and even hosted our wedding party there several years ago.

WHIZard Academy

Craig was on board about attending this event, so we met up on Sunday morning to make sure or booth was set and ready to go.  The weather outside was a bit crazy, it was very cold and rainy and windy, disappointing as the day before had been clear and beautiful!  But there was still good traffic from parents & students at the event and they were interested in hearing about what was available.  Since Wake County offers year-round schooling to kindergarten thru middle school, many of the vendors were offering track-out camp options.

GameTruck Triangle

There were over 30 different vendors at this event and they offered everything from day camps to resident-camps, to rock climbing and technology based track-out programs.  I enjoyed walking around and looking at all of the programs, especially since our oldest will start kindergarten at a year-round school this summer and I’ll need to know some track-out options for us.  I helped Craig work the booth for HPC and talked with parents & kids as they came by about all of the great activities offered at HPC.  HPC offers summer camp programs to children ages 8 to 14.  They also have a counselor in training (CIT) camp that is geared towards students’ 15-years and older. The NCSU mascot, Mr. Wuf, was even at the event and stopped by to get a picture made with Craig (Craig’s youngest son is a senior at NCSU, GO PACK!)  I was very pleased to see some of our clients from Smith & Smith, CPA at the event.  WHIZard Academy, owned by Tom & Rosemary Wyrick, were promoting opportunities for children: ages 3-5 Little WHIZards half-day & small group academics and for grades 1-12: custom one-on-one programs in math, writing, reading comprehension, sciences, SAT/ACT enrichment and more!

Hopewell Academy

GameTruck Triangle, owned by the Watko family, was offering innovative entertainment through video games by providing interactive and educational STEM based-on-site field trips, assemblies and track-out/summer camps.  I also saw my dear friend, Cecilia Gabriel, founder of Hopewell Academy.  Hopewell was promoting their Chinese cultural exchange summer program (currently in the 2nd year), along with their summer classes.  There truly was something for every single student & parent at this Camp & Education Fair.  How nice to live in an area with so many options!

Chicken and a Pig…A Cool Marketing Opportunity

I love to find a unique and cool marketing opportunity, especially one that involves the community and kids!  Our family has been a regular visitor to the Chick-fil-a at Waverly Place in Cary, NC  for well over a year now.

A cool marketing opportunity with Chick-fil-a

They have “Family Night” on Tuesday nights, where a local business sponsors a kid-craft or activity for the evening and it’s a free opportunity for everyone to participate.  Diane Curfman, Sales Manager and Deidre Lopez, Marketing Director, are a wonderful part of this Chick-fil-a marketing/promotion team and work together to make sure that each Tuesday night is a fun experience for all.  I was able to get Smith & Smith, CPA on the schedule for Tuesday, February 28, 2012 as the Family Night business sponsor.  I wanted to be able to take full advantage of this cool marketing opportunity, so I started working weeks in advance.  I wanted our craft to be kid-friendly and fairly easy for all ages, but also wanted it to be a piece that the kids would keep for a long time and enjoy.  I also wanted to somehow tie-in our CPA firm and financial theme.  So I thought hand painted ceramic piggy banks would be a great idea!  I was lucky enough to find a good deal on ceramic piggy banks from Oriental Trading Company and they all arrived unbroken and in perfect condition.  I printed round-label stickers with our name & phone number and those went on the bottom of the piggy banks on the money stopper.

Kids painting piggys!

The Family Night is from 5:30pm-7:30pm.  I arrived shortly after 5:00pm to set-up and I had a table full of kids ready to paint at 5:15pm!  I had posted the news of this cool marketing opportunity on my some of our social media outlets, so I was pleased to have some of my friends bring their kids by to paint (thanks Shelly and Heather!!)  I was also pleasantly surprised to see one of our business clients there with her family, April SchweitzerArtistic Director of Graceful Expressions Dance Education.  April’s kids were excellent little painters and were very happy of their cute creations.  I connected April with Deidre as the Chick-fil-a Family Night is a cool marketing opportunity and I could really see Graceful Expressions being the sponsor one night.

Kids & Piggy Banks

I also had a chance to see a business referral friend that I hadn’t seen in years.  Justin Vahrenburg, Small Business Sales & Sales Consultant, for Verizon Wireless, was there for dinner with his lovely wife and their two children.  Justin and I met years ago through a Business Network International (BNI) referral group.  I also had the opportunity to talk with several other families throughout the evening, some of which were fellow ECU Alumni Pirates!  YEA! I can’t say enough positive things about this cool marketing opportunity!  It is wonderful for small business owners as well as non-profit groups.  My rotary club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, sponsored a night last year and will be sponsoring again on May 1st.  Thank you Chick-fil-a!
