Bring our children to work

Bring our Children to Work!

Bring Our Children to Work…and MAYBE They Will Behave!?!

One of the really great things about working in our family business, Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary, is the flexibility of being able to bring our children to work.  It might be a sick-day, snow-day, or even a holiday when their preschool is closed and they need a place to go for the day.  I could easily hire a sitter to take care of them for that day, but being a family practice, I have the freedom of bringing them here to the office.  Our oldest son, Trent, came to the office everyday for nearly a year-and-a-half after he was born!  He was what we call a “Great-office-child”.  Trent was your ideal child to bring to work.  He played well, kept pretty calm & quiet for the most part and slept like a log during nap time.  Our youngest son, Mark, however was the total opposite and what we call “NOT-a-great-office-child”.  He came to work with me for the first 6-months of his life and then he took an early ‘admittance’ to pre-school.  He’s a feisty kid with lots of energy and LOTS of curiosity!  Over the past few years, I’ve been able to bring our children to work (or one or the other) with me for various occasions.

Spiderman and Thor working (AKA Mark & Sharon)

During the December 2011 holiday break, we sent Trent to track-out-camp and I brought Mark to work.  Well…he has clearly changed!  He was very good here at the office and I was thrilled with being able to bring my child to work!  Since my mother-in-law, Sharon Smith, started working here in November 2011, we’ve cleaned her office out (from the storage-mess-all-room that it was before) and Mark spent most of the day in that room with her.  He played with toys (I had packed a large bag for him for the day) and he watched movies on the DVD player.  Snacks and candy were also part of his day…gotta keep him happy right?!?!  I did sneak in there and caught this cool picture of him sitting on Sharon’s lap (Grandma to him) as he was watching her work and they were both dressed up as Super Heroes!  Mark was Spiderman and Sharon was playing the part of Thor.  I can’t say enough good things about being able to bring our children to work!  It was one of the reasons that the Cary Chamber named Smith & Smith, CPA of Cary Employer of the Year 2011 for their Excellence Awards!

I was very pleased last week to have attended the Cary Chamber 2012 Economic Forecast that featured Dr. Michael Walden of NCSU as the distinguished speaker.

Cary Chamber Breakfast

Dr. Walden spoke the crowd of 100+ during the early 8am hour and highlighted several of his (and other economists) predictions for the 2012-year. He addressed the overall economy, parts of our federal government and the NC/local economy. He captured some important points that I thought were worth mentioning:  1) our economy is adjusting to a lower trend in consumer spending (which is a driving force in the economy) the consumer spending rate has been lower then expected, 2) NC is #6 in the nation for worker productivity, 3) he predicts that in 2012 we’ll see improvements and that the year overall will be better than 2011, the housing market will continue to be key in the turn around and our area will still be a strong leader in our state.   I enjoyed the breakfast at Preston County Club and I look forward to the many more events hosted by the Cary Chamber this coming year!

Attorney in Raleigh for NC House

One of our attorney clients, Duane Hall (a great attorney in Raleigh) stopped by last week to talk with Blake.  Duane used to be in the office next to us, but recently moved his law office (Duane R. Hall II – Attorney at Law) to downtown Raleigh.

Blake with Duane Hall, attorney in Raleigh

He continues to serve his clients & referral partners here in the Cary area, and is also making leaps and bounds at developing new relationships as an attorney in Raleigh.  The major areas of practice that Duane’s office likes to focus on include: estate planning, real estate, family law, corporate law, criminal defense and traffic tickets.  We’ve been very comfortable referring Duane to clients/friends/family over the past few years and we know that he is going to see big growth in his office as an attorney in Raleigh.  Duane also shared some exciting news with us, he is currently making a run for political office!  Duane is running for the NC House and has a nice website up that supports this cause & explains his beliefs/platform. The site is very user friendly and has some nice video endorsements.  Take a look HERE and let’s all help Duane Hall get elected to the NC House!  We love it when it is one of our own running for office!

Do You Stand Out with Your Effective Elevator Pitch?

The fabulous gals of WBON of Cary kicked off the 2012 New Year with a dynamic lesson in crafting an effective elevator pitch by presenter, Christine Alexander.  This program was one that was highly anticipated by many ladies in the group and was creating a buzz several months in advance.  We’ve all heard the deal of how important it is to have an effective elevator pitch, but actually crafting and creating one can be a challenge!

Effective Elevator Pitch with Christine Alexander

effective elevator pitch with Christine Alexander

Christine was fast at getting to the point and helped guide everyone in the room with her quick and easy to follow 7-step process.  She started with the ever-so-important “WHO IS YOUR TARGET MARKET” question (step 1) and ended with the closing “WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM TO DO” (step 7).  She was very good at getting the ladies involved and even allowed time for the ladies to take turns sharing their newly done effective elevator pitch out loud for all to hear!  We had about 10+ ladies who took the plunge and stood to share their pitch and then Christine was able to give them some direct feedback.  It was brilliant!  The reality that WBON provides monthly speakers who GIVE our audience some VALUE during their presentation continues to be one of the major factors that separates WBON from the other networking groups in the area.

Upcoming 2012 WBON Programs

Christine certainly lived up to that expectation and she not only gave us lots to think about and work on, but she helped us create that effective elevator pith that will keep us from being tongue-tied and will help us STAND-OUT from the rest! Christine Alexander is a Strategic Writer and her company is called, Write Strategy…“Copywriting that Gets Results…Guaranteed!   Thank you so much Christine for sharing your insight to our WBON Ladies!  WBON has many more exciting programs coming up for the 2012 year!  Our Scholarship Application is NOW LIVE and we are proud to be giving away 2 scholarships at $2,200 each this year!  Please see the website to apply & for more details.  Look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on February 8th with Mary Michele Little as she helps us “Find Our Signature Style”.  Join us in March for our Charity Fashion Show to benefit The CORRAL of Cary.

US Marine Corps, Lunch at Alvin Ord’s and Bob Smith, CPA T-Shirt in History!

Big accomplishments call for big celebrations, at least that is true in our family!  I was so blessed last week to be able to attend the United States Marine Corps graduation down at Parris Island, SC  for my cousin, Jordan Fleenor

Jordan Fleenor of the USMC!

Jordan has wanted to be a Marine his whole life and his dream finally came true!  I was able to attend the ceremony on Friday morning at 9am and spent some time with my aunt, uncle, grandmother, sister and nieces.  We are all so proud of Jordan!  After the ceremony, we walked around with the other recruits and their families to see where they had been living and training for the past few months.  Jordan said the best thing about it for him was officially becoming a Marine on his birthday in late December.  How do you top that as a birthday gift?!?!  Congrats again Jordan!  I joined my sister, Karen, and her two girls (my sweet nieces) for lunch shortly after the graduation at a delightful place in Port Royal, SC called Alvin Ord’s.

Karen with her girls outside of Alvin Ord's

As we were leaving the military base at Parris Island a nice lady overheard us talking about finding a place for lunch and she recommended Alvin Ord’s.  She said it was a very delicious sandwich shop that had a huge following of fans in the area and was locally owned.  We decided to give it a go since we were hungry and we love trying new places (and love the idea of supporting a mom/pop restaurant!).  I wish I had gotten the lady’s name and number because she was totally right!  Alvin Ord’s was fantastic and stayed packed with a line out the door the whole time we were there!

Marie Lewis of Alvin Ord's

We tried to eat outside, but the cooler weather and wind helped us decide to just eat inside at one of their booths.  I had a very good taco salad while Karen ate one of their signature sandwiches and the girls had the best grilled cheese sandwiches I’ve ever tasted (I took a tiny bite of theirs…just had to taste!)  We ended up meeting the owner, Tom Lewis, as he was there helping with customers and greeting everyone as if he’d known them for years!  His lovely wife, Marie, was working the counter taking orders and I snapped a picture of her lovely smile.  After eating there I can certainly see why Alvin Ord’s is a local favorite!

After the graduation, I headed back up into Charleston, SC to stay with one of my college girlfriends, Lindsey, for the rest of the weekend.  I took her a very special gift…a gift of history!  It was one of our last t-shirts that says “Bob Smith, CPA”.  A piece of history indeed!

Bob Smith, CPA t-shirt on the Cooper River Bridge

It was left over from our Cary Chamber of Commerce Education Golf Tournament Sponsorship from late 2011.  Lindsey of course was happy to wear and sport that historical t-shirt all over town!  Here’s a cool picture of us on the Cooper River Bridge and you can see she’s wearing the shirt!  Don’t you just adore a friend that loves to wear and support their friends by wearing one of their business work shirts!?!  I promised her I’d save her a Smith & Smith, CPA t-shirt when we get them printed this year.  I was wearing an ECU t-shirt and passed several other ECU fans/alumni that day on the bridge.  You just never know when you are going to see another fellow ECU Pirate!!  ARRRGGGG!!!!!!

 Office Expansion

In mid-2011 our CPA firm in Cary decided it was time for our office to expand and really start to grow.

Smith & Smith, CPA the two offices now connect with a walk-through door

We were starting to feel cramped in our current office space and since we owned the unoccupied space next door, we decided the timing was good as ever.  So we set out to add the 900 sqft space by simply cutting a door to connect the two offices with a walk-way. Simple enough right?  Not realllly…… After working through contracts, inspections, regulations, surveys and everything else that the Town of Cary needed done, we are FINALLY there!   Through the whole process we were really pleased have our contractor, Chris Raneri of CPR Construction on our side.  Chris has been a client for several years and he was willing to take on the job.

Sign on Suite 6

Chris used his expertise to help navigate us through the building inspections and fire code regulations.  It was exciting to see the wall coming down a few weeks ago as CPR Construction started the process into action!  Our final product is very nice, last thing to be done is the installation of the carpet by Mangum’s Gallery of Floors  (another long-time client, who also did the carpet & hardwood in our office a few years ago).  Take a look at the picture below and feel free to stop by the office anytime you are over our way and take a ‘tour’ of the new space!

Starting to tear through the wall...

The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch held their January meeting at their new venue, North Ridge Country Club, located in Raleigh.

North Ridge Country Club

This was the first luncheon since the November meeting (December was canceled to do timing & holiday schedules) so there was an excitement in the area to be back together again!  North Ridge Country Club is a beautiful venue with lots of parking and a lovely & inviting foyer area.  There was plenty of room for all of the vendor tables and the dining room was large enough to hold our entire event.

Mary Cantando & Beth Dehghan

Mary Cantando, of  The Woman’s Advantage, was the guest speaker and shared quotes from her famous Women’s Advantage Shared Wisdom Calendar (they have sold out for 2012 by the way).  The quotes are collected during the year by submission to Mary’s website and then she selects her top 365 for the calendar the following year.  My favorite quote that Mary shared:  Create Your Own Title….why just be the ‘President’ of your company?  Be something creative and fun, like the female business owner in Charlotte who owns a catering company, her title is CEG (Chief Operating Goddess) Maybe I will change my title on my business card to CMG (Chief Marketing Goddess).  Do you think Bob & Blake would like that!?!  It’s fun to think about though!

Dena Morris with her designs of Dena's Jewelry Box

Mary talked about her signature color being ‘GREEN’.  She always dresses in green, her phone cover is green, her business cards are green, and everything in her business is green!  Why you ask?  Because that is her common thread and she weaves it into all that she does.  To Mary green also symbolizes: GO, GROWTH, NATURE, SPRING and MONEY!   I was very pleased to have taken several guests along with me to the meeting.  Dena Morris, owner of Dena’s Jewelry Box, was happy to join me and she also shared my vendor booth.  Dena has been a client for many years (her & her husband, Jeff, own several different businesses) and she was excited to present her precious stones to all of the ladies.  Dena creates beautiful stone jewelry pendants and knows about each and every stone.  She gave me a lovely Botswana Agate pendant and I love it!  Thanks Dena!

Robin, Christina & Becca holding jewelry from Stella & Dot (Jennifer Cullen)

I was also pleased to have Beth Dehghan of Village Cleaners  (also of WomenNC.org) and Christina Hayward of Arbonne as my guests.  All of these ladies are so special to me! I also saw Robin Reid of ViSalus, (another great client) at the luncheon for the first time!  Robin looks AMAZING as she has lost 40lbs with her business product!  Go ROBIN!  At lunch I was happy to meet some of the wonderful ladies from QIAGEN (Tracel Wilt, Marie Benson, and Beht Mundell).  These ladies work towards creating awareness of HPV testing for women.  We had some fun lunch conversation at our table!  The next Triangle Ladies Power Lunch will be held on Wednesday February 15thCarrie Peele, owner of Blue Diamond Limo, is the BRAINS behind this event and she continues to keep it growing and strong!  She also has a fabulous staff of ladies that do all of the much appreciated behind the scenes work!  See you in February!

I love a good knock-knock joke.  Here is one for you Knock Knock…Who’s there?  Tax Season!  Tax Season who?  Tax Season is HERE…NOW!

Tax King Cartoon

That may not be funny to many people, but it’s true!  We’ve been getting phone calls left and right about making client appointments and getting taxes filed.  Seems like it starts earlier and earlier each year…but as we say around Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary…tis the season!  January is nearly over and the next three months will go quickly, before we blink it will be April 17th (you get two extra days this year) and taxes will be due!  That or you will have to file an extension (remember that an extension is just an extension to file…not an extension to pay).   The IRS website is a good resource too, especially for generic questions, like about E-File and other useful tools.  Make sure you use the website www.irs.gov I looked at www.irs.com and while it is not the ‘official’ IRS website, it does have some useful information.  Our CPA office is also available to help with any questions and we are taking on new clients.  Please let us know if you are ready to get started with your 2011 taxes!

Notary Public in Cary

Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary is pleased to announce that Cam Smith, Accountant, has recently been instated as a notary public in Cary.   Cam took the class to become a notary public that was held by the Cary Chamber of Commerce in late 2011.

Cam Smith, Notary Public in Cary

The Chary Chamber offers this full-day class to members and the fee is very reasonable.  Now that Cam is certified as a notary public is Cary, our CPA office can offer his service to our clients and our community.  We’ve received calls in the past looking for a notary public and we would have to refer to a local bank or other business.   The main duty of a notary public is to be able to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents.  So congrats to Cam for adding his service as a notary public in Cary to our CPA firm!  Plus he got a really cool record keeping book and a raised seal stamp.  He seems pretty happy in his picture right?

On a different note, I’ve been working on getting all of my marketing materials organized and sorted on the shelves in our newly expanded office space.  We added about 900 sqft to our current office and I’m so excited to have an official ‘marketing area’ where I can store all of the items that I use for sponsorships, vendor tables and expo booths.  Cam purchased a really cool label maker for me to use and I was so proud of the first label that I made; however the guys in the office found it quite comical.   I labeled a clear container box that was full of our nice blue Smith & Smith, CPA pens as “Smith & Smith, CPA pens”…for some reason that is funny?  😉  I just laughed it off and told them that I’ll know where the pens are!  Thank goodness for the label!

Tax appointments/drop-offs are starting to roll in.   We are also accepting new monthly business clients.  Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary is never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  Please note that the next 4-months (Jan-April 2012) will be very busy around here and we’ll be working 7-days a week with 12-15+hour days to get everyone taken care of in a timely manner.  Please get your 2011 taxes in as soon as you can.  I’d also love to have a few new reviews posted for us under the name business name, Smith & Smith, CPA on Google.  Please click HERE to write a review (click the RED box that says “Write a Review“)  Thanks so much!   Visit our website: http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ for more information.
