Ever heard of the organization called DECA?  It is a not-for-profit student organization that was founded in 1946 and has members in all 50 states and many countries around the world.   DECA is “An Association of Marketing Students,” where knowledge is applied from the classroom, work, and the community together to strengthen the students to become a vital part of “today’s and tomorrow’s work force.”

NC DECA

This past week I had the pleasure of sevring as a judge for the local NC regional wide DECA competition on behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary and the Cary Chamber Education Committee.  This was a very exciting opportunity as approximately 850 high school students participated in this event.  The competition was held at the Raleigh Convention Center and students were given a role-playing scenario and had 10 minutes to prepare and then 10 minutes to present to a judge.  It was up to the judges to listen, evaluate, and decide if the student handled the situation properly enough to retain the customer.  Students were assigned a score from his or her judge at the end of their interview and awards for the top students were provided later in the afternoon.  There were six different categories in which students could select to participate; Sports Marketing, Sports Marketing Team Event, Apparel and Accessories (clothing and jewelry), Principles of Marketing  (basic Marketing), Quick Service Food Service (ordering like at McDonalds) and Retail Marketing (working in a mall type store).  I was a judge for the Principles of Marketing category and the scenario involved the student describing the proper technique/procedure that should be used when handling a customer on the phone.

Timothy, Gwen and Becca at DECA

I was pleased to see some familiar faces at this competition and even made a few new friends. Gwen Shaw-Deberry, Community Relations Directors for Rex UNC Healthcare, serves NC DECA as the Director of Judges and has been a friend through the Cary Chamber for many years.  She worked closely on this event along with Tim Wilcox, advisor of DECA for Marketing Education from Sanderson High School.  I also had a nice chance to speak with another Cary Chamber friend, Elizabeth Cotton, Career Development Coordinator for Panther Creek High School.  Elizabeth, Gwen and I often see each other at the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheons and at the Education Committee monthly meetings.  Timothy Howard of Clarity Connect, Inc. (Creative Marketing.  Practical Solutions.) was a judge for the event and has been a friend for many years, though I haven’t seen him in about 5 years!  Timothy is the President of his marketing company and helps his clients STAND OUT among the competition and shows them how to do it effectively.  During the breaks in-between the student judging, I spoke with Amy G. Howard, a local marketing professional.  Amy does some work with VioVio and keeps two other popular websites, Raleigh Specials Tonight and Raleigh Online Media, LLC.  The state wide DECA competition is coming up March 1st-3rd 2012 and will be held in Greensboro, NC.  They are currently looking for judging volunteers to help with this event.  I am considering going to help, will YOU join me?

And a BIG THANK YOU to Rex Healthcare for sponsoring the Judges Breakfast!

One of my great long time friends, Elizabeth Laurino, recently added this interesting article to her website.  Being that I just finished a race series and I always seem to be on the run (working mom, two kids, busy hubby, etc.) I thought it was very useful and wanted to pass it along.

Elizabeth is the founder of Massage.Wellness.Life. and really knows her stuff when it comes to keeping a healthy body AND a healthy mind!   I find myself going to her for advice on not only health and nutrition, but also on positive thinking and keeping a youthful attitude in life.

Fashion Show at Boutique in Raleigh…VESTIQUE!

I recently attended the Holiday Fashion Show 2011 at Vestique…the best little boutique in Raleigh!  The girls of Vestique, Caroline & Morgan, did a wonderful job putting the event together and tickets sold out FAST on their Facebook page nearly 2 weeks ago!

Morgan & Caroline of Vestique, a boutique in Raleigh

I was lucky enough to snag one and couldn’t wait to attend to see all of their new fabulous holiday fashions!  Vestique.com started as an online-only fashion boutique, but recently opened their first store boutique in Raleigh at 1818 Oberlin Road.  Caroline & Morgan are college friends who have made their dream into a reality and have created a HUGE following of fans around the Triangle area, but also all across the country!  Their fashions are not only adorable, but also AFFORDABLE!  So back to the fashion show…they turned their boutique in Raleigh into a full-fledged fashion show production last week, complete with a runway and cute models wearing all of the latest holiday fashions.  DJ Joe Bunn helped the models rock the runway with upbeat music while Caroline and Morgan took turns emceeing the event.  They were so detailed in each of the fashions and even had the models tossing scarves off of their outfits as prizes to the audience (I was destined to catch a scarf that was thrown directly my way, but since I was on the 2nd row the girl in front me of reached up and grabbed it!!!! Darn!)

Fashion Runway Model for Vestique

They also did a $100 gift card door prize and can you believe that one of the only guys in the audience was the winner!?! I’m sure he made someone happy with that big win!  My favorite part of the fashion show was when Caroline & Morgan recognized their parents for all of their help with making their website and store a success, they called their moms (who were present in the room) their ‘biggest cheerleaders’, I really thought that was so special.  After the show, everyone stuck around to do some shopping and the clothes were just flying off the rack!  Vestique knows how to bring hot fashions to the area!

We at Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary enjoy representing Vestique as their CPA firm and we look forward to assisting the ladies as they grow and grow and grow their dream!  Nice done ladies!

Mike Kunath and Mary Madenspacher

I received a really great email the other day from a local Boy Scout who is working on earning his Eagle Scout award.  It also turns out that his mother has been a professional referral partner with our CPA practice for many years and she suggested that he contact me to see if our Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, could help him with his project.

I have a long family history of scouting so this project really hit close to me.  My wonderful parents were Girl Scout leaders for the troop that my sister, Karen, and I belonged to for many years.   I have some of the best memories of being a Girl Scout and doing cool projects, going neat places and experiencing some really life-changing events as a scout.  I also have an Uncle Mark that was involved with Boy Scouts in Kingsport, TN for many years (our youngest son, Mark, is named after him).  So I was very eager to help this young man with his project.

Mike speaking to our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

His name is Mike Kunath and he is from Troop 316 here in Apex, NC.  His project involves building a glider (like a rocking chair, except it glides instead of rocking) for the back porch of a local place called Life Experiences that is a non-profit organization located here in Cary, NC.  The fact that Mike is choosing to work with Life Experiences makes this project all the more special to me for several reasons.  Life Experiences just so happens to be an organization that our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club has been supporting for a long time.  Our Club also sponsored and helped build the back patio at Life Experiences and Mike plans to have his glider sit back there.  The newest member in our Club, Mary Madenspacher, is the Executive Director for Life Experiences, so you can see that this project was just perfectly timed!

So, Mike came a few weeks ago to meet our Club members and do a short introduction about his project and the plans he has made to make it happen.  We are proud to report that our Club will in fact help him make this project a reality through a financial gift.  We’ve also volunteered some man-hours and tools for the construction process. We are really proud of Mike and we look forward to helping him achieve the much desired and highly honored award of being an Eagle Scout.  Mike is hoping to have the glider completed by early August, I’ll be sure to update the status along the way.  I’ve also included a picture of my Uncle Mark and my Little Mark.  🙂

Uncle Mark and ‘little’ Mark

Always have a willing heart and an open hand to help those in need!

I’ve always had a big heart for the 3C’s…Charity, Children and Cupcakes!  So I was very excited to attend an event this week that highlighted an organization that is taking over the Raleigh area by storm.  It is called ShareFish and my friend, Elizabeth Laurino, of MassageWellnessLife, is heavily involved with this group.  She invited me to attend their ConnectRaleigh event at The Mint in downtown Raleigh.  Now keep in mind that today happened to be one of those days were the temperature was a smokin’ 100 degrees and those of you who know me, know that I rarely leave my safe haven of Cary during the week.  So in order to want to go to this event bad enough, I had to reach deep down inside and give into the fact that it was hot out and I was going to venture downtown.  Well, I am so glad that I did!   Elizabeth was right, the people that started ShareFish really do have a passion for helping others, mainly children in Honduras.  The Mint was a perfect gathering place for this social/fundraiser and the atmosphere was refreshing.  I met some great new people and saw some of my favorite networkers too, Chris Cardozo of The Ultimate Sales Connection and Sonya Wagner of Airgas.  I had the pleasure of meeting Geoffrey Boone of the Markus Group Ltd. and enjoyed conversation with him about working in a family business.   Oie Osterkamp, the founder of Sharefish was present at the event and so was Chris Cimino of SalesPro Connect, the guy who made the event happen.  Thanks Elizabth for the invite as I really had a great time.

Becca, Sonya and Elizabeth

So back to the 3C’s, this Charity rocks and is worth getting involved with, the Children that Sharefish help in Honduras appreciate your support and yes, the Cupcakes were totally delicious!

With friends shopping at the Vestique Trunk Show at The Purple Polka Dot

So about a month or so ago I read a great story in the News and Observer (yes, I still totally love to read the newspaper) about this local online boutique, called Vestique, that was started by two girls who were friends at college. I checked out their store and totally fell in love! Then this past week Blake tells me that we have a potential new client coming in our office this week for a new client meeting and that their store name is Vestique. I was freaking out with excitement that 1) I was going to get to meet them and 2) that we could potentially pick them up as a client! So long story short, the girls, Morgan and Caroline, met with Blake and they liked what we have to offer clients at our accounting practice in Cary, so they signed on as a new client! Later in the week on Wednesday night I attend their trunk show at The Purple Polka Dot in downtown Cary. Such a great event and saw some of my other favorite girlfriends shopping there too! Here are the two main reasons that I love Vestique 1) Their clothes are totally trendy and each piece is unique 2) Affordable!!!!! I could go on and on with more reasons, but I’ll stop there. So like I said, I am going to really enjoy this relationship as our CPA office represents Vestique and as I spend my hard earned money on their amazing fashions! Thank you Vestique and welcome aboard!

GoldensRealty and Omega Chiropractic Spend Time with CPA in Cary

I have found that there are several great things about keeping a blog for Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary.  First of all, it lets me document all of the fun and exciting business functions and events that I get to attend.  Second, it lets me highlight different opportunities going on in the community and makes people aware of them.  Third, it gives me the chance to do some marketing and promotion for our clients (what is YOUR CPA in Cary doing for YOU!?!?)

Ken Smith of GoldensRealty, a valued client of Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary

I am making good progress on getting around to talking with all of our business clients and finding out what they have going on new.  I really enjoy doing this as it lets me get to know them better and I get to help them out with a marketing blog on their specific area of expertise.  I recently spent some time visiting with one of our long-time realtor clients, Ken Smith of GoldensRealty.  Ken and I met years ago through a business referral group (BNI) and Ken’s been a valued client of Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary for several years now.  I went over to Ken’s new office (easily located in Cary right across from WakeMed Hospital) where he shares the space with Real Estate Attorney, Marianna Montana, owner of Law Office of Marianna C. Montana.  Ken met Marianna through a class on short sales that was taught by Julia Iden, a Certified Short Sale Specialist Instructor.  Ken has recently distinguished himself from other realtors in the Triangle Area by earning his North Carolina Short Sales Specialist Certification (CSSS). He has a true passion for helping families who are facing difficult decisions and he understands the entire short sale process.

GoldensRealty on the road

Ken is very smart and business savvy and is using many different marketing strategies to keep both ends of his equation going (buyers and sellers).  One of the many nice benefits of using GoldensRealty is that you get a complimentary 1-hour consultation with Ken in which he helps you go over all of your options and makes sure that the client knows what decisions they need to make in order to move forward.  Ken also has good experience in working with couples that are going through a divorce and need to sell their house quickly.  I am comfortable in recommending GoldensRealty to families in the area that are facing a short sale or a divorce.  Ken’s compassionate and he’s a realtor that can get the job done for his clients.  Along with his GoldensRealty, Ken can also be found on HomeForSaleRaleigh and ShortSalesRaleigh and he sends out a nice monthly e-newsletter that contains valued information plus some useful tips!

Dr. Tri Myers of Omega Chiropractic

I also had a nice afternoon meeting with a new friend, Dr. Tri Myers of Omega Chiropractic Center.  Oddly enough Dr. Tri and I also met through a BNI group a few months ago.  Dr. Tri is a fellow ECU (GO PRIATES) Alumni and has a doctorate degree from Parker College of Chiropractic Sports Physician in Dallas, Texas.  Dr. Tri recently opened his practice here in Cary and is specializing in working with athletes, sports injuries and teams.  Dr. Tri’s wife, Dr. Rachel, is also a chiropractor and is currently working in Sanford, NC in the specialty areas of nutrition and Functional Medicine.  Dr. Tri is growing his business through word-of-mouth and small business networking groups.  We’ve talked about membership to the Cary Chamber and the ways it could help him grow his network and business clients.   If you haven’t met Dr. Tri already, I am sure you will soon, he has become a good friend of Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary.

Our CPA firm in Cary is growing and we are currently welcoming new clients.  We have a BRAND NEW website http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com  We are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!

I was so pleased to have had the opportunity to attend my first WomenNC.org event earlier this week.  I was introduced to this organization through a good friend and client, Beth Dehghan.  Beth is the Executive Director for WomenNC, which is a 501-(C)(3) non-profit organization that is involved with the United Nations Annual Commission on Status of Women (CSW) and supports the tenants of the UN’s International Treaty CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women).  I attended the Fundraiser for CSW Student Fellowship Program, which was an afternoon international tea-tasting reception.

WomenNC.org CSW Student Fellowship Fundraiser

The five students from North Carolina that have been selected to receive the WomenNC.org  fellowship awards were present at the fundraiser and I really enjoyed meeting several of them and finding out more about their particular area of interest.  I spoke with Hannah Nemer, a student at UNC Chapel Hill, who is doing her research on: Role of Media In Education, and I also spoke with Becca Bishopric, a student at N.C. State University, and she is doing her research on: Human and Sex Trafficking.  The other students; Anuja Acharya, Abby Bouchon and Mariamawit Tadesee were also there.  These young ladies will be gathering research on their specific women’s issues in North Carolina and then will travel to the UN Commission in New York City in early 2012 to present their findings at a UN Panel Discussion and will also attend various sessions.  How exciting for these young ladies and they truly are making a difference in the world, especially for women.

Vaji Dehghan serving tea

I’m looking forward to working with Beth on more WomenNC.org events.  I will be attending their presentations on February 16th 2012 at the NCSU Faculty Club.  The teas were very delightful at the fundraiser and I enjoyed tasting different ones and chatting with other guests.  Beth’s husband, Vaji, was one of the tea servers.  Vaji and Beth are the proud owners of Village Cleaners and Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary is proud to represent them.  Check out their website for locations and some valuable coupons!  They would be happy to help you with any of your holiday dry-cleaning needs, and think of Village Cleaners if you have any spills or accidents during the holidays (especially with all of those family members in town!)   Thank you, Beth, for introducing me to WomenNC!

Total Source Realty, Just Call Brenda! Gift box of goodies

Christmas is such a fun time of the year! So many great things going on all around us, cooler weather, decorations everywhere you look, and the sense of hustle & bustle in the air. The holidays are a fun time of the year, especially as I sign/stamp and mail out postcards to all of our individual and smalls business tax clients (1,000+) and I am nowhere close to being done and Christmas is next week!  But I’ll get them done one way or another. Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary really enjoys this time of year as we start to receive some really yummy treats from our clients and referral partners! I’d like to share some of those with you and highlight their businesses. One of our newest clients is the Tim and Brenda Carroll team of Total Source Realty home of…”Just Call Brenda!”. We met Tim & Brenda Carroll a few months ago through a referral introduction and a speaking opportunity at the Small Broker’s Council for the RRAR. Tim and Brenda are a very dynamic team and we foresee a very good relationship with them for years and years to come. Real Estate agents/companies have proven to be excellent clients for us at Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary because realtors are very detailed oriented and pay close attention each and every aspect of their own clients. Tim stopped by the office last week with his son and his sweet little granddaughter. They delivered a goody box that was full of wonderful holiday candies and treats. They also included a very nifty 2012 calendar magnet and some notepads. They are having an Open House next week at their home and I’m really looking forward to attending!

We received one of the coolest Christmas cards ever this year!

Pop-Up Santa Workshop card from Capital Associates

It came from my new friend and fellow Cary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors friends, Tom Huff. Tom is the Chair for the Cary Chamber for the 2011-2012 year and is an Associate Partner at Capital Associates. The Christmas card from Capital Associates is a pop-up card of Santa’s workshop! It stands alone and looks so great on our front office ledge. We’ve had tons of compliments on the card over the past week. Thanks Tom!

We’ve received a handful of yummy treats and we are really going to have to work hard here at Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary to watch our waistlines during this holiday season from growing due to all of these delicious goodies!

Tommy Boatright Salon spicy mix

Tommy Boatright, proud Owner of Tommy Boatright Salon stopped by late last week to deliver three gift boxes full of a spicy nut mix. Blake and I love spicy foods and this mix is really unique and the flavor is amazing!  Tommy’s salon is very popular and he keeps a full schedule, but it always welcoming to new clients seeking a top-notch professional stylist. Tommy has a Facebook page, you can find out more and like him HERE.

Another referral partner, Ward & Campbell Lawyers, delivered a plate full of decorative sugar and gingerbread cookies, fresh from the oven at Once in a Blue Moon Bakery & Cafe  in downtown Cary.

Ward & Campbell Blue Moon Bakery Cookie Plate

Ward & Campbell are divorce attorneys and I know both Linda Ward and Rachel Campbell personally. The plate of cookies was almost too pretty to eat…but don’t worry, eat them we did!   A few weeks ago the postman delivered a large box of sweet pears, caramel/chocolate popcorn and other treats, compliments of Sarah Thacker, Owner of Thacker Law Firm, PLLC. Blake and Sarah work closely on client legal/tax issues and Sarah has become a trusted referral partner with Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary. And last but not least, RB Engineering sent over a holiday tin from A Southern Season that was full of chocolate peanut brittle and seriously, I am having a very difficult time keeping my hand out of that tin! Thanks Abby and Ron, the wonderful owners of RB Engineering for this excellent treat!  Have you received any great holiday treats!?!   How nice to be loved and appreciated by so many.

Our CPA firm in Cary is growing and we are currently welcoming new clients.  We have a BRAND NEW website http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com  We are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  Please note that our office will be close at 5pm on Friday December 23rd and will re-open on Monday January 2nd 2012.
