Marketing Trends…Ever Changing but so Engaging!

Marketing Trends

My job as the Director of Marketing for our CPA practice is very unique.   It is mainly unique because of the size of our firm.  You’ll find marketing people in the bigger CPA firms, but not necessarily in ones our size.  Therefore I embrace the uniqueness and really challenge myself to embrace the opportunity I have to SHINE as the Director of Marketing for Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C.   As I’ve gotten further and further into my marketing position, I’ve found that marketing people ‘think’ differently from others, we tend to look at opportunities from a different angle and we push the envelope on how a product/service can be placed, noticed and most importantly…SOLD!  We follow marketing trends and thrive on unique selling points.  I love meeting other marketers and having ‘brain-storm’ sessions with them.

Leon Rawitz

I was recently introduced to Leon Rawitz of Fail Proof Marketing.  Leon and I were introduced through a mutual friend, Jay Barish of Symmetry Financial.  We meet for coffee last week and I’m very impressed with Leon’s take on marketing and his background experience.  Leon is also a fellow blogger, click HERE for some of his recent work.  After meeting with Leon, I went over to meet with another new marketing friend, Stacey Shanahan of CDS Productions.  Stacey and I met through WBON a few months ago.   Stacey is also known as “Web Video Raleigh” and helps clients take their message to the web with high quality-produced business videos.  She also offers service for graphic design and personal videos.    Stacey and I spent an hour discussing marketing trends that we are seeing evolve in our line of work.  Stacey also keeps a blog on her website, and it is a great resource for marketing people!

Marketing Trends

I did some quick research the other day for marketing trends in 2012 and found this great article called “2011 and 2012 marketing trends – “Be On The Cutting-Edge, Not the Bleeding-Edge”.  The article is fantastic as it highlights 10 marketing trends that small business owners should start incorporating NOW in order to be positioned well for success.  I was happy to see that our CPA firm is already doing nearly all of these marketing trends!  You can click to read the whole article, but I’ll go ahead and summarize the top 10 marketing trends:

1-Build reliable brand advocates (NOTE: those face-to-face networking groups really DO work!)

2-Excell in one area rather then being ALL things to ALL people  (NOTE: That is why our CPA practice specializes in small-medium size business accounting, payroll and tax.  We choose NOT to sell insurance, provide financial planning, etc.  BE EXCELLENT at the services you offer, not just mediocre)

3- Create quality content as a viable marketing tool (NOTE: this fabulous BLOG that you are reading now!)

4-Moving more marketing dollars to social media (NOTE: yes yes yes!  We hired Eric Green of Eric Green Marketing back in early spring of this year and he’s been a huge resource to me for social media & Internet marketing)

5- Tracking brand reputations on the social web in greater detail (NOTE: pay attention to your reviews online and also get clients to write positive reviews for you on your Fanpage, LinkedIn, etc., THEY WORK!!!)

6- Increase in branded online experiences to meet diverse consumer needs (NOTE: trying to reach all markets through Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube Marekting page, etc.)

7- Pursuing Mobile Marketing

8- Geo-Targeting and localized marketing will become a top priority

9-Accepting that silo marketing is ineffective  (NOTE:  You HAVE to cross-brand!)

10- Co-Marketing to boost returns and lower marketing costs (NOTE: Promotional partnerships!)

Social Media Marketing & MORE

My favorite quote from the article: “This year, all businesses will be experimenting with a variety of online, localized and mobile marketing initiatives. Remember, even if you’re not leveraging marketing trends and opportunities, your competitors are!

Keep in mind that our CPA firm in Cary is growing and currently taking on new clients.  We’ve changed our firm name to Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. as Blake recently received his CPA license!  We are expanding into the office next door and we are hiring more staff.  We also have a BRAND NEW website up, check it out http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/!  Even with lots of great growth and changes taking place, we are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  PS:  I am still looking for good support for the We Build People Campaign for the YMCA.

Business Expo

Becca, Tony & Blake at Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. Business Expo booth
The Cary Chamber held their Annual Business Expo on November 2nd2011 at the magnificent Prestonwood Country Club.  It was a very well received event by our community and the crowded aisles and full parking lot was a testimony alone that it was a busy and popular place to be!   This was the second year in a row for our CPA firm to have a booth and I was very pleased with the quality of visitors that stopped by.  It’s always a challenge to figure out what best to put at our booth (let’s face it…accounting/taxes are only so exciting) so I came up with doing a ‘money tree’ as a focal point for our booth.  We did a money tree earlier this year at the Apex Chamber Business Expo and it was well received, so I did a ‘new’ and improved money tree for this expo.  I went to Lowe’s and purchased a miniature fir tree and then decorated it with money (real dollar bills).  I also put a glass tray filled with coins around the bottom of the tree.  Visitors were invited to stop by our booth and take a guess at how much money was on the tree, as well as in the glass dish.  That was the kicker, counting the coins!!

Dennis with Fred and Rondy of White Tiger

Speaking of  ‘kicker’, two of our friends from White Tiger Taekwondo stopped by to say hello and I got an action shot of them with a fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotarian, Dennis Pitts of McNeely Associates PA.  During the expo I met lots of new business owners and people in sales positions.  I also talked with lots of people at the Business Expo who were new to the area, mainly because they moved here hoping for a fresh start with their families and looking for a better quality of life.

Signs Now

It was nice to see some of our clients there exhibiting their businesses as well.  Judy of Signs Now in Cary had a nice booth at the Business Expo and was easily talking with new potential clients about their business needs.

Office Suites Plus friends

I enjoyed seeing many friends come by the booth to say hello, many of which I don’t get to see very often!  I was pleased to see Martha Card of Office Suites Plus stop by, she was with Cheryl Teal and Michelle Benson, also of Office Suites Plus.  Martha and I go many years back and I love getting to see her!  My ‘expo booth neighbors’ were CertaPro Painters and Walgreens. I had fun laughing with Randy Smaltz, Sales Associate, of CertaPro and introduced him to several people during the expo.

Walgreens Flu Shots

Walgreens was doing flu shots and had a nice steady flow of traffic for that service.  I didn’t walk around the whole expo this year as much as I usually do, mainly because I was the only one there from our office (Blake did stop by for about an hour so I could go grab some lunch), but I did stop by to see my friends at Doctors Express Urgent Care, Autumn LaBarca and Lisa Cotter.  I was a recent patient at Doctors Express and they had me in and out of their clinic in no time (I actually had plenty of time with the doctor, she was so sweet, and I was feeling better in just a few days)

Autumn, Ashley, Becca and Lisa

Ashley Mooney of Randstad was also at the expo and she was still glowing from her recent wedding day!  Ashley, Autumn, Lisa and I have all served terms of being Cary Chamber Ambassadors over the past few years.  Being an Ambassador for the Cary Chamber is really a great way to build friendships and meet new business owners in the area.

Another group that I am involved with, WBON of Cary, also had a booth at the Business Expo.  WBON always does an attractive ‘candy buffet’ and it draws lots of attention!  WBON of Cary was promoting our upcoming Annual Holiday Auction for Scholarships that is actually coming up next week, November 9th.  Please visit the website for more info and to RSVP!

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Booth

This was the FIRST year that the Rotary Club I belong to, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, had a booth at the Business Expo.  Our club is making a big push to do more Public Relations events and the expo was a great opportunity for us to spread the word about our club.  We were promoting our upcoming Open House that is going to be Thursday, November 10th at the BNC in Cary.  We were also promoting EndPolioNow and collected $1 donations for a chance to win a PRIZE out of the ‘sandbox pie’.  We had a nice mix of our club Rotarians helping with the booth (ones that have been members for many years and also some of our newest members).   We were pleased to have raised $50 in donations in our Polio jar and collected lots of potential names for new Rotarian members!

All in all it was another successful Business Expo for the Cary Chamber!  Well worth the time, prep and planning!   Looking forward to reaching out to all of my new contacts and making business happen!  REMINDER!!!  Go by Chick-fil-a Waverly Place this Saturday (Nov. 5th) to vote for two scarecrows…”Scare Polio-Away” in the non-profit group and “Scare-Taxless” for our CPA firm in the business part!!!!!

Our CPA firm in Cary is growing and currently taking on new clients.

LinkedIn for Business

I recently participated in my FIRST class at Wake Tech Small Business Center.

LinkedIn for Business: William, Becca, Jim and Andrew

It was a class on the fundamentals of LinkedIn for Business and was provided as a partnership through the Cary Chamber as a FREE Workshop for Chamber members.  William Blackmon, CEO of LinkmeIn.biz and his business partner, Andrew Shannon, CCO, presented the 100-minute seminar on LinkedIn for business at the Wake Tech Business & Industry Center in Cary.  I’ve been a LinkedIn user for several years, but really needed to brush up my knowledge and skills for what this tool could really provide.  I was very impressed with William and the class was easy to follow and very informative.  I took notes (like a good student) and was anxious to get back to my office to make the necessary updates to my personal LinkedIn Profile (connect with me on LinkedIn by clicking HERE).  I also learned how to create a business profile for Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. (coming SOON!!!).  I was pleased to see several other Cary Chamber friends at the class, always good to see others taking advantage of wonderful opportunities like this!  I stuck around afterwards to meet William and Andrew and to get a picture for my marketing blog (of course) and asked my good friend, Jim Fletcher, of KW Commercial, to join us in the photo.

Wayne & Eric Loots with President Brad of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Later in the week I was pleased to see Wayne Loots, Dean of the Business & Industry Services at Wake Tech, speak at our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club last week.  Wayne’s son, Eric Loots, is a member of our Club and invited Wayne to speak about the programs, classes and events taking place at the Wake Tech campus.  Good stuff and lots going on over there!  Are you taking advantage of what Wake Tech is offering to our community, especially the small business owners?  If they offer the LinkedIn for business class again, I strongly encourage you to sign-up!

Money Tree…They REALLY Do Grow!

So it is now time to announce the winner of our MONEY TREE from the Cary Chamber Expo last week.  I was pleased to have had over 100 visitors who stopped by our booth and took time to make a guess at the amount of money on the MONEY TREE (including the bills on the tree and the coins in the dish).  It took me a few days to review all of the guesses and to make sure I had a clear winner.  Well, ladies and gentlemen, you have to wait no longer as Baxter Walker of Colliers International was the winner with the a guess of $49.50 and the MONEY TREE amount was $49.71.  Congrats to Baxter!  He stopped by the office today to collect his MONEY TREE, and yes, he wanted the fake gold coins that were on display in the dish at the expo.  Of course I asked Baxter to pose for a picture with the tree and bag of coins, see below. Enjoy your winnings Baxter and be sure to water that tree…who knows, maybe it will grow some more money!   And thanks again to all who stopped by our booth to say hello and guess on the tree.  Better luck next year!

WBON Scholarship Auction

Ever been to a local charity auction?  Have you been to one that just blows your mind on being so great, so organized and so well-run?!?  Well, the WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) held their Annual Scholarship Auctionfor 2011-2012 and it was one of those auctions where you just can’t say enough great things about it!

Christine, Tobi & Sharon, Auction Committee Gals

Now, I guess I might be a tad bit biased since I’m the current President of WBON-Cary and since I think so much of this organization that has been around for over 16 years, but I’m okay with that!  But I know how time consuming an event of this scale is to put together and organize and I know how hard our Fundraising/Auction Co-chairs (Sharon Galluzzo and Autumn LaBarca) worked, along with countless hours of help from their committee members.  So I have every right to brag!

Zebra bag from Adore Designer Resales

WBON-Cary is one of the few (if there are any others!?!?!) organizations that gives $$$$ scholarships back to our community, and they don’t go to high-school or college students.  Nope, they go to WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS!  The scholarship program was designed in 2001 to benefit women in Wake County (or members of WBON) that have owned their business for at least 1-year.

Table Decor & Past Scholarship Winner Message

They are allowed to use the scholarship money for advancing their business skills, education and training.  Since 2001 we’ve awarded $32,000 to 19 deserving women.  It’s an amazing program and I’ve had several close friends who have won the scholarship and it’s done wonders for their business growth & development!   So the auction was great today!

Becca with Wayne Anderson

We were very pleased with Preston Country Club (our new venue since August) and the way their staff helped to cater to our arrangement and layout for the event.  A big thanks to Christine Borneo, Event Coordinator & Member Relations for Prestonwood Country Club, for being a total jewel to work with each month!  She’s been so patient with us.

Moon & Lola Auction Gift

Auction items were amazing and we had a huge selection, from hand painted ornaments, to custom jewelry, clothing, accessories, hotel stays, theater tickets, food (YUM), shopping sprees (YEA!!!) and anything else you could think of!   We really appreciate those donors who have been supporting our auction for years with lovely items.

Karen running the live auction

I know several ladies who come to this event each year to bid on a specific item and they won’t stop bidding until they win!  We added some new fun things to the bidding this year with “BUY IT NOW” option on the bottom of the bidding sheets (thanks to Alphagraphics of Cary for printing those).  The “BUY IT NOW” allowed a bidder to stop all bidding on that particular item because they were willing to pay the top amount to make sure it was theirs!  We also did some fun ‘bidder frenzies’ during the auction that inspired ladies to be the specific bidder on each item in order to qualify for a prize drawing.  We also grouped items together this year in order to offer some ‘package deals’, such as a hotel stay + dinner certificate + theater tickets.  Those package deals went over very well with the ladies!   I was a lucky winner (top bidder) on several items and I think everyone left today with a smile on their face!  We raised close to $4,500 in about 1.5 hours…not bad at all!  We were happy to have Wayne Anderson doing some cool magic around the room for us, and Karen Bernard was our auctioneer and brought along her friend, Phran Gacher, to help track bidding during the live auction.  Speaking of the live auction, I had fun watching the ladies bid back and forth over some of the items, I love it when it gets competitive, and all for a great cause right!?!

Toys for the Women's Center in Raleigh

We also had a nice stash of toys that were brought in by ladies for the Women’s Center of Raleigh.  I’ll be taking those down there late next week, they are excited to have them as a donation!  Come visit us at WBON, we meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 11:30am-1:30pm at Prestonwood Country Club, we are open to women business owners and professional working women.  More on our website: http://www.womenbusinessassociation.com/

Bead Store in Cary, NC

Delories, Shirley & Bridgette at Beautimous Beads, bead shop in Cary

I always enjoy it when one of our clients hosts a special event or an open house.  I recently went to the Holiday Sip & Shop for Cute Buttons, The Purple Polka Dot and Beautimous Beads in historic downtown Cary.  I was only able to visit Beautimous Beads because of my Rotary Club Open House that night, but I was so glad that I stopped by!  Of course Bridgette, the owner, had the bead store in Cary looking so nice and organized.  She greeted me with a smile and showed me around to some of their newest items.

Front Toggle Necklace

Beading is a big business in this area and a very popular among the ladies,  so we are lucky to have such a great bead store in Cary!  I asked Bridgette what the latest trend in beading is right now and she said that ‘front toggle’ necklaces are very popular and also chunky-thick necklaces.  Some other fashionable pieces in Beautimous Beads include coral & turquoise sterling necklaces, and semi-precious stone earrings & necklace sets.

Chunk-Coral & Turquoise Sterling Silver Necklaces

I loved the wristlet-rose min-purses that are displaced on the front table when you walk in (excellent gift-giving ideas!!!) Beautimous Beads offers all types of beads, stones, accessories and jewelry building hardware.  There is a small room in the back that is excellent for small parties, bridal/baby showers and other fun girls-nights events.  Just contact Bridgette at her bead store in Cary if you are looking to host a fun beading-event!  Also keep Beautimous Beads in mind as you start (or finish) your holiday shopping.

Wristlet-Rose mini-bags

I bought a really nice clay piece from one of her local artist, Ashley Cain, to use as a birthday gift for a college-friend and I treated myself to a very unique ring made of Czech Glass Beads (it is soooo cool!)  I found a fun set of holiday tumblers that come with a dry-erase marker and say on the side “Dear Santa, Please stuff my stocking with (FILL IN THE BLANK) this year”. Those will make a fun game at some of our annual holiday girl-parties!   I hope you were able to join the shops downtown Cary as they hosted their Holiday Sip & Shop.  Where did you shop that night and did you get anything great?!?

If you are looking for a great bead shop in Cary, I encourage you to stop by Beautimous Beads to see their lovely selection!   You can find all three of the stores that participated in the Holiday Sip & Shop on Facebook.  Connecting with local retail stores via Facebook is a great way to receive updates of their new items, be included in fun & funky contests, give feedback reviews, and also to receive coupons and special shopping codes.

Shout-Outs to Clients and Cool People!

So I am going to use this blog to do some shout-outs to some of our great clients and cool people that I have met this week.  The first shout-out goes to one of our clients, Julie Crissey of the Diet Center in downtown Cary.  The Diet Center has diet programs that are developed from nutritional principles, which are easy to follow and proven to produce successful results.  Julie can help you become slimmer and healthier!  Her latest success story is Coach Matt who has lost 17lbs and has only a few more to go!  Click HERE to see the before and after pictures of Coach Matt’s progress.  The Diet Center is on facebook HERE and you can reach Julie at 919-467-6261.  Julie has one of the best personalities of anyone I’ve ever known and has a true genuine heart for helping people.

Andrew Kenny of The Cary News

My second shout-out goes to my new friend, Andrew Kenny, a reporter for The Cary News.  Andrew found me through my blog and contacted me to get together for coffee.  We had a nice meeting at Coffee & Crepes in Cary and traded stories of networking in the Cary/Holly Springs area.  Andrew is always looking for new stories to report, especially ones that are unique and involve the community.  Andrew is originally from New Jersey and is a 2008 UNC graduate in Journalism.  If you have a story for The Cary News, contact Andrew at akenney@newsoberver.comand follow him on Twitter @andrewjkenny or call him 919-460-2608.

Todd Binde of Brushes & Buckets

My third shout-out is for one of our tax clients, Todd Binde.   I met Todd last year at the Cary Chamber Expo and he has a painting business called Brushes & Buckets.  Todd has been a professional painter for many years and is currently looking for exterior painting jobs.  Todd has been doing jobs in the Holly Springs/Fuquay-Varina/Apex area but covers all of Wake County.  Interior paint jobs are also good for Todd and he’s looking to expand into the refurbishing and refinishing furniture trade, with a focus on the distressing of furniture (love that old antique look!).  Give Todd a call if you need his services at 919-412-2881 or by email todd.binde@yahoo.com   Love his motto for Brushes & Buckets “Building Relationships One Project at a Time”.   And that is what relationship-business-building is all about if you ask me!

Jersey Mikes for WBON Board meeting

My fourth shout-out is for Jessica Cutler of Jersey Mikes Subs of Preston Corners.  Jessica is in Marketing for Jersey Mike’s and contacted our WBON group earlier this year about catering one of our Board meetings.  We were pleased to enjoy a full platter of three-different subs from Jersey Mike’s during our November Board meeting.  Jessica did a fabulous job in providing us with all of the condiments (mustard, mayo, oil/vinegar, pickles and banana peppers!)  Thanks so much as our Board really enjoyed the dinner!  We’ll be happy to use Jersey Mike’s again for future meetings. Here is a picture of some of our WBON Board members enjoying the catered dinner.  Please contact Jessica for your business or personal catering needs at jcutler@mikesmarketers.com or by phone 239-470-2197, she will be glad to help you with your event!

My fifth and final shout-out goes to a long-time friend that I haven’t seen in AGES, Kim Adamof!  I saw Kim a few weeks ago at the Cary Chamber Expo.  Kim is a social media consultant and focuses on facebook marketing and social media strategies for her clients.  Kim has lots of talent in this area and was kind enough to film a short video with me at the expo explaining her skills & consulting techniques.  Click below to watch the video.  Great to see you Kim!

Love doing shout-outs!  The week is half over and so much more to blog about…stay tuned!

Blake and I were recently asked to do a presentation for the Raleigh Regional Realtors Association (RRAR)-Small Broker’s Council on Tax Planning for the Smaller Firm
Blake Presenting to the RRAR, SBC
This was an excellent opportunity for us and we were so grateful for the invite.  Blake worked hard on putting together a 37-page slide presentation that covered the four main topics of 1) Taxes on Real Estate Investing 2) Start-Up and Organizational Expenses 3) Autos and 4) Business Entity/Status.  There were 35+ in attendance and the meeting was held at the Raleigh Regional Realtors Association located at 111 Realtors Way (a fabulous facility that is used for all types of events!)  We took a nice light breakfast and the meeting started at 8:30am (whew, EARLY!) with networking and meet/greet.  We were able to talk with some of the realtors as they arrived and find out their expectations/questions for the presentation.  We had printed off a copy of the entire slideshow presentation so that it could be used as a tool for the realtors for future reference and as a guideline during the presentation.

Full Class of the Small Broker's Council

I was very impressed with the Small Broker’s Council (SBC).  They are organized by Vicki Buckholz of RRAR and Co-Chaired by Brenda Carroll, owner of Just Call Brenda Real Estate Team of Total Source Realty and Kevin Woody of Kevin Woody Go Realty Team.  The Small Broker’s Council is a fairly new group and their mission is to provide support, education and networking opportunities for the smaller, independent real estate firms in our region.  The RRAR and SBC are supporting an Angel Tree that had over 800 Angels when it first arrived!  They are down to just 30 Angels left and are asking for everyone to pitch in a hand to help.  Gifts need to be delivered by November 30th and you can contact Vicki for more information.  The RRAR also has a Holiday Party on Thursday, December 8th from 6pm-9pm, more information is on their website

Blake Answering Questions

I’d like to thank Brenda and Vicki for inviting us to speak to the SBC.  I’ve heard good feedback and it sounds like we answered questions and presented information that was valued and needed.  Always great to hear!  Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. currently represents several independent real estate companies in the area and we welcome more to use our services.  Thank you to those realtors who attended and if you are seeking to buy/sell/invest in real estate, I encourage you to use one of them below:

Debbie Yow of  NCSU for the Cary Chamber

I recently had the pleasure of introducing the guest speaker, Debbie Yow, for the Cary Chamber Business of Women & Sports Alliance joint-luncheon.

Debbie Yow speaking to the Cary Chamber

Normally the Business of Women meets at Prestonwood Country Club and the Sports Alliance meets at the Cary Chamber, both meetings offer networking, lunch and a guest speaker. The Sports Alliance is made up of committee members and business owners who have a vested interest in sporting events/athletics in the Cary area. Most people have no clue about all of the sporting venues and events that take place in Cary on a regular basis (nearly every weekend!!!) Between the WakeMed Soccer Field, USA Baseball, the Triangle Aquatic Center, Cary Tennis Park and the many public parks, Cary is a VERY busy place for sports on all levels! The Business of Women luncheon draws on all types of business and professional working women. The BOW is a favorite among many Chamber ladies/members and typically draws a large crowd of exceptional women each month. This luncheon was unique in that it combined both groups and was held at Vaughn Towers over near the RBC Center and the NSCU Carter-Finley Field.

Becca, Blake and Bob in Vaughn Towers, NCSU

Women Business Owners Network of Cary (WBON) is the Gold-Sponsor for the Business of Women Chamber luncheons and since I am the current President of WBON and a Cary Chamber Board of Directors member, I was given the honor of introducing Mrs. Debbie Yow-Director of Athletics for North Carolina State University.  My boss (and father-in-law), Bob, is an alumni of NCSU, and so I asked him and Blake (my husband) to join me for the luncheon that afternoon. It was exciting for us to be on the 1st floor in Vaughn Towers and to see the incredible view of the field from the box seats and members-only viewing area. We especially loved the bright red recycle cans that were covered by an extra-large NCSU football helmet. I had read through the bio/introduction for Debbie Yow several times (okay, about 25+ times as I was a little nervous and I wanted to make sure I got it all correct) and I couldn’t help but be impressed with her long list of coaching and leadership contributions in the high schools and colleges across the country.

Howard and Barry for the Cary Chamber

I was pleased to have sat beside her during lunch and got to speak with her on a more personal level. Turns out she spent a few years at ECU (GO PIRATES) and we joked about professional handshakes, one recent story of her’s in particular where a guy nearly broke her hand by shaking it too hard! I gave her some tips on how to get out of an uncomfortable handshake or how to avoid the ‘kisser’ or ‘hugger’ in the professional world, straight from the lips of etiquette coach-extraordinaire, Sharon Hill. Other guest at our table (besides Bob and Blake and me) included Howard Johnson (President of the Cary Chamber), Kathy Burns (Burns & Bynum, CPA and Chair-Elect for the Cary Chamber), Barry Mitsch (Pyramid Resource), Michelle Lee (NC State’s Senior Woman Administrator and the Associate Athletic Director) and Betty Jo Shepheard, (Field Representative for NC Senator Richard Burr). After I introduced Debbie Yow (I did so without stumbling through too many of my words), she took the microphone and told us her philosophy on leadership and shared with us her challenges of being only one of three women Athletic Directors in the country! One thing she wanted to stick with the women business owners/professionals in the crowd is this quote “Leadership Is Not a Gender Issue.” She talked about her zero-tolerance for the phrase of “That’s the way we’ve always done it” and shared how she will always be forever grateful to Maryland for getting her started in her college athletics career.

Delancy shows her WOLFPACK pride, along with Cary Chamber Ambassador, Heather Swanner

She mentioned that her main goal is to “not screw-up for the rest of the women in the world who will one day follow in her footsteps, as the world of college athletics leadership is still very much a mans world” (I loved that quote). She also talked about laying the right foundation and how you need to have the right people, resources and opportunities in place to make things happen. It all comes down to hiring the right people. She shared some great stories of her past players and inspirational people in her life. She left us with the ole’ favorite coaches quote “Good, Better, Best…” Look it up, it will inspire you!

One last fun announcement to share is that Cary, NC will be hosting their FIRST EVER US Olympic Trials at Bond Park! It will be for the Table Tennis sport and will be held February 9th-12th, tickets and details soon!  How exciting for Cary, NC!

Happy weekend!!!!

The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, hosted by Carrie Peele of Blue Diamond Limo, held their monthly November meeting on the 16th at the lovely Hilton, “Mansion on the Hill”.

Carrie with BG Beth Austin & Chaplin Culbreth & Lieutenant Colonel Belk

The guest speaker was Lieutenant Colonel Almarah K. Belk, and she shared her career in the U.S. Air Force as a Public Affairs Officer in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs (OASD/PA).  I loved the way that she shared her story, she did it in a ‘flash-back, third-person’ point of view and had several fast-forwards worked in.  It was a very captivating story!  The Pretty In Pink breast cancer hero for the luncheon (there is one at each month) was Chaplin Melissa Culbreth, of the NC Army National Guard Raleigh Reserves.  Chaplin Culbreth had several guests with her; one in particular was quite an honor, BG Beth Austin of the NC Army National Guard. Austin was the 1st Female General in NC, so her achievement was praised by all of the women in the room.  What an honor to meet such wonderful ladies as these three, especially ones who have made careers to serve our country.

Vendor/Shopping Hour

Chaplin Culbreth and her friends were picked-up by the PINK limo and made a grand entrance for the luncheon.  Such a nice treatment of ‘royalty’ for them and they all deserve it so much!

Phoenix Trading & Julie Wingerter

I enjoyed the ladies who were seated at our Smith & Smith, CPA sponsored table.  They included: Kim Oestereich of Jewels by Park Lane, Kathy Bartholomew of Essential Bodywear, LLC, Deb Zechini of Order in the House, Sharon Smith of Smith & Smith, CPA, Joy Barber of Flex-Pay Payroll, and Diane Lawrence of GeoMagic.  I loved meeting each of these ladies and learning about their business ventures.

Santa & Carrie

It was also nice to have Santa Clause make an ‘early’ stop to visit the ladies, he was handing out cute cookie cutter ornaments from Blue Diamond Limo.  I purchased two really neat Advent interactive calendars for my boys from the Phoenix Trading Card Company, Julie Wingerter is the representative that participates in TLPL, she’s super great!.  Sharon Smith, from our office, went with me to this meeting and she found several great purchases from Vivienne Carosso of Cookie Lee Jewelry.

Jennifer Kidd of Kidd Photography

I also thought it would be fun to snap a picture of Jennifer Kidd of Kidd Photography since she is usually the one behind the camera.  Jennifer is a friend/client and is promoting her Holiday Mini Sessions.  This was the last TLPL for the 2011 year, I look forward to seeing all of the wonderful ladies in 2012!

And a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Carrie Peele!  She’s a November birthday gal and took some of her gal pals (me included) to the Carolina Hurricanes Hockey game over the weekend in STYLE by the party-bus limo!  We had a great time and so happy to celebrate with Carrie!

Canes game for Carrie's birthday!

Oh and by the way, Carrie has a new friend named, Shelli Mayfield, a PR and Social Media Coordinator that is running all of the social media & more for Carrie.  Follow Shelli on Twitter @shellimayfield.  I had a chance to get to know Shelli at the Canes game, she is a fascinating lady, a student at NCSU (GO PACK) and she really know her stuff!  Click HERE for her blog & more info.
