Cary Chamber Celebrates Day of Service

T-Shirt for Volunteers

T-Shirt for Volunteers

Today was really fun!  A nice little ‘break-escape’ from the taxes, well….for me at least.   Today was the First Day of Service with the Cary Chamber of Commerce.   The Cary Chamber serves as the unified business voice in the community and was able to connect nearly 200 volunteers with 8-10 different non-profit partners in the Cary Community.  Volunteers were asked to sign-up for different jobs and were assigned locations throughout Cary.  We all gathered this morning at the Cary Chamber for coffee, breakfast (Duck Donuts), t-shirt distribution and a brief announcement about the day’s events by Howard Johnson, President of the Cary Chamber.   The theme of the day was “Make Connections, Get Involved and Make a Difference!”Smith & Smith, CPA was happy to help sponsor this inaugural event.

Let's get to painting!

Let’s get to painting!

As a Board Member for Life Experiences, I wanted to spend my volunteer hours working there.   So I teamed up with my good friends, Tia Coppus from Bank of NC and Lisa-Gray Vick of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and we spent the morning painting YELLOW walls in the cafeteria at Life Experiences.  It was a lot of fun, we had some good laughs and were able to get the wall completed.  The whole rooms needs another fresh coat of paint, but that’s a project to come later on this summer.  Here are some photos of our day to share!

Speaking on Finances

Blake speaking

Blake speaking

A few weeks ago Blake & I had the opportunity to participate in a Financial Information Session with one of our referral partners, Anthony (Tony) Delauney. Tony is a Certified Financial Advisor with Amerprise Platinum Financial Services and has been a friend & referral partner of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years. Tony is expanding his practice into the Cary area and asked Blake several months ago if he would be willing to participate as a guest speaker for a Financial Presentation on behalf of his firm.

Speakers Panel

Speakers Panel

Blake was delighted to be asked and the event was held at the North Carolina Museum of Art on Friday, March 6th. Blake was a panel speaker, along with two attorneys from a Raleigh law firm. The event was very nicely organized and there were about 50-60 people in attendance, ranging in age from mid-30s to late 70s.  After a welcome social, Tony took time to welcome the guests and introduced the guest speakers. Blake was the first speaker and covered a variety of topics including the questions: How is social security taxed if taken BEFORE full retirement age, What are the catch-up contributions with retirement plans, Do clients usually end up in lower tax brackets once they retire and What mistakes do people often make when they retire. The two attorneys covered the topics of living wills and other legal matters.

After all of the speakers were done, Tony opened the room up for question & answers. As I said earlier, the event was very well organized and I think everyone who came had a good time and took home some helpful information. The food was delicious not to mention! Many thanks to Tony and Deborah Bednarcik, Client Service Specialist, with Ameriprise, for including Blake and Smith & Smith, CPA with this event.

Tony and Tax Stress Basket

Tony stopped by our office this week with a HUGE basket of Tax Season Final Stress Weeks Goodies! He knows just how hard we work and how long the final weeks before April 15th can be. We greatly appreciate his generosity and the cake made by his wife Laura was AMAZING! Anyone with a successful business knows just how important it is to have a good surrounding of reliable and professional business referral partners. Smith & Smith, CPA is blessed to have many!

Less then 30 days to go until April 15th! The weeks are really flying by and hopefully you have already had your taxes filed, or you are at least in the process of getting them done. Don’t wait to the last minute! Smith & Smith, CPA is happy to help, just give us a call.

Frill Clothing Episode on Shark Tank

Shark Tank for Frill

Shark Tank for Frill

Last Friday, March 6th, was a night that we have been looking forward too for a LONG TIME! One of our clients, Frill Clothing, was appearing on the popular show, SHARK TANK! How exciting!!!!!!! Blake Smith, one of the co-owners of Smith & Smith, CPA began working with the owners of Frill, Sharon and Kate, several years ago when we developed a relationship with them through various networking and social groups like the Cary Chamber and ShopLocalRaleigh. Both of these ladies have the strong entrepreneural spirit and the drive to make their custom sorority & bridal boutique business a thriving success! They applied to be on Shark Tank and made it all the way to the finals!

Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank

Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank

We were “FRILLED” (AKA Thrilled) to know they had made it all the way! The hardest part was waiting for the national TV date to be announced! Blake and I were invited to attend the Frill Private Shark Tank Viewing Party at Noir Bar & Lounge in downtown Raleigh. The place was PACKED with tons of friends, family, sorority sisters, Frill vendors & support team, plus a whole ton of other people from NCSU Entrepreneurship Program. Both Sharon and Kate gave nice thank-you speeches and the parts to their parents nearly made me tear up and cry!

CHEERS to Sharon and Kate!

CHEERS to Sharon and Kate!

They started this company while they were Juniors in college with only $500! They saw a need & opportunity in a very niche market and have grown Frill into a company name that is now widely known on many college campuses nationwide! The viewing took place on a big screen TV and the night was EXTRA special due to the appearance of a SURPRISE GUESTMr. Wonderful (AKA Kevin O’Leary).

Mr. Wonderful is one of the SHARKS and went in with a deal to Frill with another Shark, Barbara Corcoran. Barbara wasn’t able to attend the party on Friday night, but we had a great time seeing Mr. Wonderful up close! Blake even got a chance to speak with him for a few minutes and we were delighted to get a personal photo with him too! The viewing of the episode was great and ladies did a fabulous job explaining Frill and making the business plan simple and easy to understand.  Blake and I had a great time being included and know that many fantastic things are ahead for Frill! We look forward to working them with for a long time to come. Congrats again to Kate and Sharon!

Cary Chamber Reverse Car Raffle & Auction

Last night was one of our favorite events of the year!

Girl Scout Cookie Basket for Twila

Girl Scout Cookie Basket for Twila

The Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Reverse Car Raffle and Live/Silent Auction.  It’s a great time and brings in 300-500 people!  The event is held at Prestonwood Country Club and includes tons of delicious food & drinks.   The first few hours of the event include a silent auction with over 200 items!   That’s always our favorite part!   This year, Smith & Smith, CPA donated a Girl Scout Cookie basket…filled with every kind of cookie you can get!  Congrats to Twila Wilt of Jim Wyatt, CPA for winning our basket!  Twila serves the Cary Chamber with me as an Ambassador and told me she plans to eat the cookies while she does laundry!  Sounds like a great plan to me!

Alicia’s mom also painted and donated a beautiful canvas print of the white house in downtown Cary.  Thanks for your donation!!!   The evening event also features a Live Auction segment.  My friend, and fellow ShopLocalRaleigh member, Kim Davis, offered a YEAR OF PAYROLL during the Live Auction for her business, The Paystub People.  Blake and I had several friends bidding and they won some great stuff!   After the Live Auction ended, the final part of the night was the REVERSE CAR RAFFLE!  That’s right, the LAST ticket drawn was the winner of a 2015 Chevy Cruz Car!   However, the final 5 ticket holders agreed to sell their tickets back for $1,400/each so they all walked away a winner!

Blake and I had a wonderful time and love going each year to support the Cary Chamber.  The event last night is the signature fundraiser for the Cary Chamber and goes towards supporting all of their annual programs for small business owners.  Thanks to all of the Cary Chamber Ambassadors who worked hard to collect auction gifts and also volunteered last night to keep the event running well.  Kudos to the Cary Chamber Staff for their hard-work and dedication to our community!

Thanks to my beautiful friend, Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary & downtown Apex, plus Oh La La in Cary, for dressing me for every single networking event.  Last night she suggested I wear the black & cheetah animal print top by Trina Turk!  Thanks Lois for all you do!  Shop at MCG and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your total purchase!  SHOP LOCAL!

A Blog All About the M’s!

My Girlfriend's Closet UpCycle Your Wardrobe

My Girlfriend’s Closet UpCycle Your Wardrobe

This week has been CRAZY and I haven’t had a chance to really blog and get some things posted.  So I’m going to try to cover it ALL in one big Friday the 13th Post!  Last week on Feb 5th there was a great event called UpCycle Your Wardrobe, hosted by none-other then My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  MGC continues to be one of my MOST FAVORITE places to shop and while I wasn’t able to attend this event due to a conflict with another event, (will tell you about shortly), I did have several friends that went and they had a great time!  My good friend, Jessica Register, of Union Bank, went to the event and had a lot of success cleaning out her closet and jump starting her spring wardrobe!  Here is a cute picture of her with store owner, Lois Cozart.  They plan to do more events like this and I’ll do my absolute best to make the next one!

The Golden Gates Dancers

The Golden Gates Dancers

While my friends were at MGC to UpCycle their Wardrobes, I was at my Thursday night Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club meeting.  We had a fabulous program last week that featured student exchange students from Russia, Georgia and the Ukraine.  They are part of a traveling entertainment/dancing group called The Golden Gates.  They entertained our Rotary Club with lots of cultural dance and costumes.  It was a very unique program and was enjoyed by all of our members and guests.

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club members at Mardi Gras Kick-Off

Last Friday night was an event that Blake & I look forward to each year….Mardi Gras!   This year the event was hosted on Friday night (used to be on Fat Tuesday), and it drew a great crowd as usual.  Lots of food from local restaurants, a local brewery and tons of great gifts to bid on in the silent and live auction.  The live band was The Back of the Boat and they had people dancing all night long!   The Mardi Gras Kick-Off Event serves as a fundraiser for both Life Experience and Cary-MacGregor Rotary Club & their programs and projects during the year.

And last but not least, Smith & Smith, CPA is a proud sponsor of a local MOPS group.  One of our clients (and a personal friend of mine) Tayloire Queen, asked me to consider sponsorship and it sounded like a great opportunity for us.  The MOPS group meets at First United Methodist Church in downtown Cary.   MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers and they have groups all around the country.  This morning I was invited to join the group and do a brief presentation to them on the services offered by Smith & Smith, CPA.  I’m a big sucker for Valentine’s Day, so I made 30 gift bags for each of the ladies with all kinds of goodies, chocolates and candies.

Sugar Scrub from MOPS

Plus each bag included on our Smith & Smith, CPA HOT & COLD STRESS RELIEVER!  Very cool!   I spent a few minutes talking to the ladies about Smith & Smith, CPA and gave them a few tips & pointers to remember during tax season.  They gave me a very nice jar of Scrub-A-Dub Brown Sugar Scrub as a sweet thank you gift!!  I love sugar scrub so that was a perfect gift!   Thank you to Tayloire for the nice introduction to the MOPS group!  Tayloire is a Senior Creative Leader for Initials, Inc and recently earned a trip to Cancun through her company!  Way to go Tayloire!  Have a great time!

Michael Kors dress for Mardi Gras!

Michael Kors dress for Mardi Gras!

Many thanks to my dear friend, Lois Cozart.  I mentioned her earlier in the email, but wanted to give her another shout-out.  Lois has been dressing me for my networking events & socials for over 2-years now with items from her My Girlfriend’s Closet stores in downtown Cary and downtown Apex.  She dressed me in the Kate Spade sweater dress (seen in the photo with the Russian dance girls, as well as the Michael Kors Sequence Gold Wrap Dress for the Mardi Gras event.)  She knows style and know how to dress every woman with any type of body and style!  THANK YOU SO MUCH LOIS for this amazing marketing/promotion business relationship!

So a couple of things have happened the past few days…the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow thus predicting six more weeks of winter and your mailbox has probably been filling up with all of your tax documents and papers.   Our CPA firm was asked by CaryCitizen to submit an article with some tips and tricks for getting your 2014 tax return ready for filingThe article is featured this week on CaryCitizen and if I do say so myself, it includes some very helpful advice (and I can say that with confidence because I wrote the article after all!)  I encourage you to take a few minutes to read it, it’s not long, might take you 3-5 minutes max, but to also share the article with others if you think it would be helpful to them (and yes, I think it would be helpful!)  Here are some of the simple things for your 2014 tax filings that I highlighted: Organize!   Don’t SPEND to SAVE!  Review and SIGN Your Tax Return!  and finally…ENJOY YOUR WEEKENDS…Hire a Professional to do your 2014 tax filings!  Simple enough right?  I also included in the article a list of the important dates to remember for 2015…pay attention as they will sneak up fast!

Duck Donut OBSESSED and Tax Materials!

What to Bring for Your Taxes

What to Bring for Your Taxes

So here we are at the end of January 2015.  Most people have already started to receive their W2s, 1099s and other important tax documents from their employer, bank and other institutions.  Many people ask us each year “What Do I Need to Bring In for my Taxes”.   We’ve tried to make this easy for our clients by putting a list on our website under a tab that says “What To Bring For My Taxes”.  Take a look, some of the items may apply to you and some may not.  Gather the ones that do and go ahead and drop them by our office and we’ll get started on filing your 2014 tax return!

Duck Donut Cary Chamber

Duck Donut Cary Chamber

There is this NEW place in town that is causing quite a stir…it’s called Duck Donuts!  I heard about them a few weeks ago when my good friend, Christine Johnson, asked me if I had been over to the store to have one.  Being that the store is right across the street from our office, she was shocked that I hadn’t been over to taste the goodness!   I finally  had a chance to try Duck Donuts this week…not just once, but TWICE!   On Wednesday, I attended the Cary Chamber Ribbon Cutting for Fonke Chiropractic.

Ben Fonke of Fonke Chiropractic

Ben Fonke of Fonke Chiropractic

The owner, Ben Fonke, is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA so I was happy to be able to be there to support him.  Ben showed us around his office and did a demonstration of the spinal decompression technique that they use in his chiropractic office to help ease lower back pain in their patients.  Ben’s whole family was there to support him (so cool) and they had some very nice food to share in the celebration…which included a box of Duck Donuts!  So I gave in and tried them…...HOOKED!   I came back to our CPA firm still licking my lips!

Ribbon Cutting Duck Donuts

Ribbon Cutting Duck Donuts

Blake sent me back across the street to pick up a box for the whole office!   So I text Christine and told her the GOOD NEWS….We are DUCK DONUT BELIEVERS!!!  Then on Thursday, Duck Donut had their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, also with the Cary Chamber.  I was privileged to be able to attend and the owners, Kelly and Brandon Trimyer are soooooooo nice!  They gave everyone who attended the ribbon cutting a box of donuts to take with them!  Cheers to a new fun business in town that is adding some yummy goodness…and yet sadly, making my skinny jeans a little less skinny….Happy Weekend!!!!!   See you in February 2015!
