Celebrating in Charlotte!

One of my good friends has a BIG birthday coming up in a few weeks, so we took off to Charlotte, NC for a Girls Weekend to CELEBRATE!   This blog post will highlight some of the great fun and experiences that we had!

Tour De Food (Food tour in Charlotte, NC)

We started out the weekend with a really fun FOOD TOUR of the NODA area in Charlotte.  Like most big cities, Charlotte is broken down and identified by different areas (Uptown, Southend, NODA, etc).  We decided to do the NODA Food Tour with a company called Tour De Food.  This is an eclectic vibe of NODA (North Davidson Art District), with lots of cool stores, unique restaurants, tons of art work, murals and funky cool people!  The tour included stops at 7 different restaurants (including a popsicle stand!), mixed in with some walking for exercise in the cool historic neighborhoods, plus a history lesson on the old mill area.  Our tour guide, Jon, was very knowledgeable and really made the tour fun.  There was a total of 17 people on our tour and it lasted from 12:30pm noon until 4:00pm.  I have done Food Tours all over the country and this was one of the best!  A food tour is a great way to learn about the area, try lots of different foods, get some exercise and have a great time in a new area!

Comedy Funny Bus in Charlotte, NC

On Saturday night, we had tickets booked to ride the Funny Bus Comedy City Tour.  Again, we’ve done comedy buses in other cities, so that was kinda what we were expecting.  This was fun, but very different from other funny bus tours.  The jokes were a little crude, so like their website says, NOT FOR CHILDREN, but if you are looking for a good tour of Charlotte and want some laughs along the way, this is a fun thing to do!

US National Whitewater Center

On Sunday, we went to the US National Whitewater Center…a place I have been waiting to go to for a LONG LONG LONG time!  We spent 12 hours there and had a total blast!  From whitewater rafting, to rock climbing, high ropes course, 100ft drop and more, we stayed busy all day and loved every minute of it!  It’s a place to really find out your outer & inner strength, face your fears (of heights or water) and test your limits!   I highly recommend a visit there if you are looking for some local adventure!

Hyatt House Pool Side

For our weekend in Charlotte, we stayed at the new Hyatt House, located in downtown Charlotte, near the EpiCenter and Time Warner Cable Arena.  This hotel is fairly new and really nice.  The staff were super friendly and the location was perfect for all we wanted to do and see.  We loved the rooftop pool and spent time up there relaxing and even took a short nap in the sun!  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for the gorgeous beach/pool coverup!  Shop there and mention Beccablog.com for 10% off your total purchase!

Hole Sponsor with Cary Chamber Golf

Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA

Yesterday was the most gorgeous day!  And a PERFECT day for golf!  Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to be a Hole Sponsor for the 2016 Cary Chamber of Commerce Member-Guest Golf Tournament.  We’ve been sponsoring this tournament for several years now.  Usually Cam & Blake will invite two other golfers to play on our foursome team.  But THIS year, they asked (or were told) that the wives were going to play!  That means Brooke and I got to play!  We started off at Prestonwood Country Club with check-in and headed to our carts.  We were assigned to play on the Fairways course.

Hole Sponsor Smith & Smith, CPA

Our carts were loaded with box lunches and a goodie bag with treats from all of the event & hole sponsors.  Paragon Bank was the Presenting Sponsor for the tournament.  After a greeting from Cary Chamber President, Howard Johnson, and a few other special guests, we were on our way to golf and enjoy the afternoon!  We played well, and while we didn’t win, we still had a great time and enjoyed spending the day supporting the Cary Chamber!  And thanks to all of the Cary Chamber Ambassadors who were out on the course driving the beverage carts and working the prize holes! It was fun to see you all!

Here are a few pictures to share from the day!

They also had cool give-aways (best koozies ever) and a drawing for a Yeti Cooler!   You had to select a golf tee out of a bowl and then later on they would draw some lucky numbers to win gift cards and other things…like the Yeti Cooler!  And guess what…#19 was my LUCKY WINNER and the Yeti Cooler from Lightspeed Marketing came home with me!!!!!

Attending the HOW Live 2016 Conference

HOWA few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the HOW Live 2016 Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.  I was able to attend the conference as part of a scholarship I won last year.  In early 2015, I applied for the WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) Scholarship Fund.  This is a financial scholarship award that is given out each year to 1 or 2 professional working women in the Cary area.  The scholarship is good for 2-years and can be used towards continued education, training, trade shows, conferences, professional development and seminars.  HOW Live was a good opportunity for me to interact with other professionals in the marketing field.   Below is a recap of the events I attended during the 5-day conference.

Oliver Jeffers

Oliver Jeffers at HOW Live 2016 Book Signing

Oliver Jeffers at HOW Live 2016 Book Signing

One of the highlights for me was getting to hear Oliver Jeffers speak as a keynote speaker on Friday, May 20th.  Oliver is an author & Illustrator of many well-known children books.  He illustrated one of the books that our boys LOVE LOVE LOVE so much, The Day the Crayons Quit.  I stood in a long line to get to meet him and have him autograph two books.

House of Blues Entertainment

David Fortin, House of Blues

David Fortin, House of Blues

On Thursday I sat in the session called “A DAM Case of the Blues”.  This one focused on the entertainment & restaurant franchise, The House of Blues.  The speaker was David Fortin, Senior Vice President of Marketing for The House of Blues.  I found his story from working as a bar-back to now being the head of marketing quite amazing!  He talked about the marketing challenges we all face now, with technology constantly changing and updating, how to stay relevant, capture the attention of your audience and keep a consistent flow in your marketing & advertising strategy.

Re-branding Uber

Shalin Amin, UBER

Shalin Amin, UBER

Another speaker highlight for me was to hear Shalin Amin.  He is the Director of Design, Products & Brand for UBER.  I am an avid fan of UBER, so I was anxious to hear him talk about the challenges UBER has faced over the past few years and how they went about their process to completely re-brand their company.

Exhibit Hall Opening Reception

Exhibit Hall Opening Night

Exhibit Hall Opening Night

One of the things I loved the most about HOW Live was the Exhibit Hall Opening Reception.  This was held on Thursday night and featured all of the sponsors and vendors who were present at HOW Live.  The room was full and offered all kinds of marketing ideas from stock photography, to paper companies, to work flow technology and even a nonprofit that support children’s art & creativity in downtown Atlanta…it was so much fun!

Captivating Exhibits at the Exhibit Hall

Captivating Exhibits at the Exhibit Hall

It took me about 2-hours to browse through all the vendor.  I enjoyed meeting many of them, collecting cool swag (t-shirts were the best) and having dinner on the heavy hors d’oeuvres there were provided.

Never a Worry on What to Wear

Wardrobe for HOW Live selected from My Girlfriend's Closet

Wardrobe for HOW Live selected from My Girlfriend’s Closet

One of the nicest things about the conference for me was not having to worry about what I was going to wear each day and to all the sessions & speakers.  I went to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex, NC before I left and picked out tops and dresses that were comfortable and easy to wear.  Lois and her team of ladies do such a fantastic job on helping women dress for what looks BEST on them!   They made packing and dressing for HOW Live a breeze!  I highly recommend them for your next packing or traveling trip!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your final purchase!

Anniversary Love

Then ((2005) and Now (2016)

Then (2005) and Now (2016)

And a final shout-out in this blog post to my love & hubby of 11-years…Blake Smith!  We celebrated our 11-Anniversary together on May 21st.  We were both gone for the actual date (me at How Live and Blake on a guy’s golfing weekend) so we celebrated a few days later with a nice dinner at Flemings Steakhouse in Raleigh.  And yes, my long, silk Maxi dress a lovely find at My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Joint Rotary District Conference in Wilmington, NC

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at 2016 District Conference

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at 2016 District Conference

A few weeks ago, Blake and I had the pleasure of traveling to Wilmington, NC for the FIRST EVER, Joint Rotary District Conference between District 7710 and 7730.  We stayed at the Hilton on the waterfront, enjoyed beautiful weather and a fun packed weekend!  Blake and Ethan played golf, while Tia & I attended the conference meetings.  We had 5 members from the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club attend (Becca, Tia, Susan, Kyle & Dave).  We learned so much about all of the great projects going on in our own District 7710 and also about other projects going on in NC and the world!

Club Awards

Cary Club Awards

It really made you proud to be part of Rotary.  We also enjoyed time exploring Wilmington, eating some great seafood and relaxing after a very busy Tax Season 2016!  Here are a few photo highlights from the weekend.  So proud of our club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, for coming in FIRST in total money raised for the C.A.R.T. Fund (for Alzheimer Research) and 3rd per capita for C.A.R.T.

26209459414_2922a871bd_oWe also received the Governor’s 5 Star Award +1 for Distinction. We also received awards for earning the Presidential Citation for 2015-2016.  That is REALLY hard to get!  Congrats to all of the clubs and all of the winners!  See you next year in 2017 for the Rotary District Conference here in Raleigh, NC!  And don’t forget that the Rotary International Conference for 2017 is going to be here in the USA in Atlanta!!!!!!

Bucket Bash with Fill Your Bucket List Foundation, Plus Cary Crime Stoppers, and Much More!

Now that the rush of ‘tax season’ is over, I am trying to get back in my better pace about blogging!  I have lots of events to catch back up on from the past week, just seems like each year tax season ends and the craziness of life & schedules take over!

Fill Your Bucket List Foundation Bucket Bash Gala

Bucket Bash Gala with Betty and Tia of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Bucket Bash Gala with Betty and Tia of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Over the weekend Blake & I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd Annual Bucket Bash for Fill Your Bucket List Foundation.  This is an amazing organization that grants wishes for adults with cancer…think “Make A Wish” but for adults!  So incredible!  The organization is very young, but has already made a remarkable impact on the community and helping adults make their wishes come true!  The Founder, Peggy Gibson Carroll, is VERY passionate about their mission and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to meet her several times over the past year.  Their goal on Saturday night at the Fill Your Bucket List Foundation Bucket Bash Gala was to raise $100,000 and they DID IT!

Bucket Bash at Chef's Academy

Bucket Bash at Chef’s Academy

The event was held at the Chef’s Academy Campus and featured competing chefs with their own signature menu items to taste, a full buffet, silent auction and much more!  Several friends from my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club were there, along with some of our clients from Smith & Smith, CPA.  I LOVED seeing that one of our clients, Seton McGlennon of Seton’s Studio had donated an item for the silent auction.  Seton does beautiful work through her artistic creations and has done work for US Presidents, Oprah and other celebrities!  Check out her work!  Congrats to Peggy and her Board of Directors for a fun and successful event to help so many who are struggling and suffering from cancer in our community.

Create your memories in art with Seton!

For the past 11 years, I have had the opportunity to participate in the Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Drive.   I get to help recruit new members to the Cary Chamber and see them get involved and flourish with their business!  It is very rewarding, as our CPA firm has been a Cary Chamber member for over 11 years and the benefits are incredible!  One of my new members for the 2016 year is The Cary Crime Stoppers.  Their current Chairman of the Board is Jaqui Carlislecary crime stoppers logo Jaqui joined me this morning at the Cary Chamber April Eye Opener Breakfast.  We heard from speakers in the Wake County School System about STEM-Impact and the work they are doing to get teachers and the business community connected and engaged together.  It was a very interesting topic and I’m so glad that Jaqui could join me!  Check out the Cary Crime Stoppers and see how they are working to keep citizens safe in and around Cary.

The Corner Tavern & Grill

corner tavern year 2Congrats to The Corner Tavern & Grill for their 2nd Anniversary Celebration!  They had a big 2-day party over the weekend and featured all kinds of local bands, games, prizes, events for the kids and of course, their amazing food!  Blake and I were not able to attend due to schedule conflicts with the boys & family, but Alicia and her family were there to take part in the festivities and celebrate!  The Corner Tavern & Grill has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA since nearly the beginning and we are thrilled with their continued success in Cary!  Congrats to all of them and looks like the celebration was FUN for sure!  We look forward to celebrating 3 years next year and more after that!

Annie Get Your Gun and New Client Babies!

Tax Client new baby, her name is Kate

Tax Client new baby

One of the most favorite things for me each year during tax season is to hear about and MEET the new babies of our tax clients!  Last week one of them came in to see me!  I’m holding baby Kate in this photo, who is just 3 1/2 weeks old!  She’s super sweet and was very cuddly.  🙂  I am so glad she came by to see me!  I remember holding her big brother a few years ago after he was born.  My good friend, Liz Cantino, had her second baby YESTERDAY and I’ve already been over there to see her and get in some snuggles!

kk playAnd last but not least, this past weekend was Blake’s OFFICIAL first weekend after Tax SeasonYEA!!!!  We were able to get in some good family time with the boys and even took them to see the play, Annie Get Your Gun.  The play was put on by Apex Middle School and featured our very own cousin, Michaela Fillingame, as one of the dancers!  She did a fantastic job and the boys enjoyed getting to see her after the show!  Congrats Michaela!

And a BIG SHOUT OUT to my #1 Most FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOPMy Girlfriend’s Closet…two stores…located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex!  I’ve been working with MGC for about 4 years now and I’m so proud to shop and wear from their stores!  They have something for every lady and for every occasion!  All of the photos in this blog include dresses, sweaters, tops, shoes and accessories from their store!  Please stop by to see them and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a discount on your final purchase!  Also follow them on Facebook & Instagram!

Celebrating the End of Tax Season 2016

Smith & Smith, CPA office staff

Smith & Smith, CPA office staff

Each year around mid-April, Smith & Smith, CPA has a tradition of taking the entire office staff, plus a guest of their choice, out to dinner for our End of Tax Season Celebration Dinner.  Now, we know that Tax Season is really NEVER over, as there are several hundred extensions that have been filed and need to be completed by the October 2016 deadline, but none the less…the mad rush and stress of meeting the April 18th 2016 deadline has passed and we can all breath!  So on Tuesday, April 19th, we have a very nice End of Tax Season dinner at one of our most favorite places, The Angus Barn.  Ahhhhhh…delicious, delightful and de-stressed!  As always, they took excellent care of us and we had a terrific time.  I always enjoy getting to see Van Eure, Owner of The Angus Barn.  She has been a friend & mentor since my days at East Carolina University.  She stopped by the table to say hello, get a hug and tell us congrats.  Thanks Van!  We’ll be back for our Smith & Smith, CPA office Christmas Party in December!  Some pictures to share below.

Tax Day 2016 Has Come and GONE!

So here we are on April 19th…the day ‘officially’ known to us as the DAY-AFTER-TAX-DAY!  We made it!  Lots of LONG, LONG, LONG hours and LONG, LONG, LONG weekends, but clients are happy (the ones with refunds), taxes are files, extensions are extended and the phones are a little bit quiet (for the most part).  That’s a Happy Day-After-Tax-Day if you ask me!  But there is still plenty of work to get done!  And I’m happy to return to a more ‘normal’ schedule of blogging!  I have several events to catch-up on…trust me, I will!  But here are some pictures to share from around the office…

Pizza Goes Well with Tax Time!

How did we make it through those final few days of filing (we had 4 extra days this year too thanks to Leap Day and Emancipation Day)..with lots and lots of PIZZA!!!!!!!!!!!!

tax paper boxes

Cam is restocking all of our paper and other office supplies…just imagine how heavy all of those paper boxes are!!?!!  Did he build up some muscles typing in all of those tax returns for 3 1/2 months or what!?!?!

tax paper boxes 2

Opps!  Watch out Blake!  Long hours (15+), lack of sleep and a big stack of boxes can make for a dangerous meeting! (Blake is okay…photo was staged of course).

On behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA…we would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of our awesome and wonderful clients!  It is a pleasure working with you all, many of which we only get to see once or twice a year!  We truly appreciate your business!

Leadership Cary in Education with the Cary Chamber of Commerce

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Earlier this week I attended the Cary Chamber Leadership Cary Class of 2015-2016 seminar on Education.  I am happy to serve at the Co-Chair for this year’s class.  We started the day off at the Cary Chamber of Commerce in downtown Cary where we heard from Wake County Public Schools Superintended, Dr. Jim Merrill.  Dr. Merrill gave an overview of the current WCPSS stats, number of schools, students, amount spent per student, teacher salaries and graduation rates.

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

He also discussed the goal for 2020 to have a 95% Gradation Rate…which also includes students having the skills to be able to walk at graduation but also move on to the next level…being prepared for the real world!  After Dr. Merrill we heard from Bill Fletcher, Board Member for Wake County Public School System.  Bill spoke on building new schools, student population growth, student achievement and the upcoming election in November.  Bill has been a friend for many years, he is active in Rotary and really tires to connect the community with the school board.

WCPSS Superintendent, Dr. Merrill

WCPSS Superintendent, Dr. Merrill

I enjoyed hearing both of them speak.   After Bill, we heard from Lisa Wilson, Director for Corporate Relations Wake Technical Community College.  Lisa is a fellow East Carolina University alumni (GO PIRATES) and she spoke on the new things at Wake Tech, their growth and NINE campus locations all in Wake County.   After the morning session, I came back to work (it’s Tax Season after all!) and the group went over to tour Hunt Library at NC State and learned more about Vernon Malone College and Career Academy.   Thanks to Christie Moser for her guidance and support to the Cary Leadership class!  Christie works at the Cary Chamber and makes all of the Leadership Cary plans and arrangements.

Sweet Things at Smith & Smith, CPA

Becca & Alexa

Becca & Alexa

I had a sweet visitor at work yesterday too!  My good friend, Tia Coppus, brought their dog, Alexa, by to see me.  We have helped to doggie-sit Alexa over the past few months and I always get exited to see her!  We have not gotten another dog yet, our 10 1/2 year old dog, Griffin, passed away in December.  The boys are hoping to get another dog soon, we keep telling them we have to get through tax season first!  Thanks to My Girlfriends Closet for the super cute pink and black polka-dot dress!  I paired it with a black cardigan and stayed comfy all day!  And I think Alexa liked stopping by to see me too 🙂  Thanks Tia!!!  She made my day!

Donuts!

Donuts!

Another sweet treat!?!  We had a guy stop by the office who was selling Krispy Kreme donuts for a fundraiser and yes, we didn’t say NO!  The guys bought several boxes an had them for breakfast, lunch and a later afternoon snack!   For some reason…those donuts in the Fundraiser boxes always seem to have LOTS of extra frosting on them!  We are in count-down-mode at work…Friday March 18th is ONE MONTH until TAX DAY…April 18th 2016!  Don’t Blake, Bob and Cam look cute!?!?!

Everyone always ask “Oh don’t you just hate tax season since you are so busy!?!”  and the truth is NO, we don’t hate it at all.  Now don’t get me wrong, we ARE BUSY and it is kinda crazy in here, but the pure fact that we have REALLY awesome clients makes it so much easier to get through this time of year!  Just check out this fresh bag of oranges that one of our clients brought in the other day!  Nothing is as good as a fresh orange!  We have also had several of our referral clients bring in breakfast and coffee, what a great way to start the day!   Not to mention, Blake has received some really nice emails from clients, thanking him for our hard work, professional manner and friendly service.   Check out this one email he got this week!

“Hi Blake, once again, thank you very much for doing my taxes this year.  Your firm is just amazing and you do a fantastic professional job.  I enjoy working with you.”

And a special thanks to Serendipity Cafe, one of our restaurant clients located in downtown Cary, for bringing us lunch today! YUMMY-YUM!!!!  By far one of my MOST FAVORITE places in downtown Cary to eat!   We all got to order one of our fresh made sandwiches.  What a great lunch for a Friday afternoon to kick off the weekend!  We ordered: The Hot Turkey Melt, Crown Club, Reuben and Tried & True!  Who is ready for lunch today!?!  WE ARE!!

So how about ONE MORE food post to cap off this blog for the day!!?!  My little guy, Mark, had to create a business for his kindergarten class last week and bring items to sell.  It was their “Economy Day”.   So he decided to sell brownies and lemonade.  We borrowed a lemonade stand from our neighbor from him to use at school, and well, long story short, the brownies I ‘attempted’ to make at home went right in the trash!  (don’t ask!!!)  So who else do you call when you need the BEST Brownies in town!?!  Life Experiences!!!!!  They have the BEST bakery in town, staffed by adults with disabilities and their brownies are made with LOVE and so good! So those are the brownies that Mark proudly sold at his lemonade and brownie stand last week.  🙂   Get an order today!
