Beach Boys Hanging with Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA guys at the beach

It has been a GREAT beach week so far!  The weather has brought us storms and rain each afternoon, but nothing that has ruined our week weather-wise.  The kids are having a great time playing together and all of the adults are getting to relax and enjoy the time away from the office.  Just a few more days to go before we are ‘back to the grind’.  Hope your week has been productive and nice too!

Noodle Bar in Raleigh with ShopLocalRaleigh and Bloggers!

Torii Noodle Bar by Kanki

Torii Noodle Bar by Kanki

So last night I had a pretty cool experience, I was invited by Jennifer Martin, Executive Director for ShopLocalRaleigh to join in on the SLR Food & Travel Bloggers event at Torri Noodle Bar by Kanki.  Now, noodle bars are one of the hottest food trends in 2014, so I had to go and check this place out!  Jennifer knows that I’m an avid blogger and not only is Beccablog.com about our Smith & Smith, CPA clients and helpful tax/accounting advice, but I also LOVE to blog about events and happenings within our networking groups, such as ShopLocalRaleigh.

Delicious Appetizers by Torii Noodle Bar

Delicious Appetizers by Torii

I’ve also been adding some reviews to TripAdvisor and UrbanSpoon here lately too, so it all ties in together nicely.  This was my first time at a noodle bar, though my husband and I are fans of the roman noodles that you can make it home, so I had to go and compare the two!  Torii Noodle Bar is located at Crabtree Valley Mall on the top level, right down from Kanki.  It is owned by the Kanki family and has both indoor and outdoor seating.  It is not a large space, seats 40 people inside and has large glass windows that provide lots of natural light.

The noodle bar was closed for just our group and upon arrival they offered you a drink and some delicious appetizers (edamame, Gyoza, calamari, and tataki).  The room was set-up in a ‘cooking teaching style‘ and I couldn’t wait to get started!   Those who know me know that I would rather do the dishes and clean-up after a meal ANY DAY instead of being the chef, but I was looking forward to this experience.  Everyone at Torii was very nice and I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Alex Cordova, Executive Chef for Torii (he taught the noodle making class), Tom MukoyamaCorporate GM and Certified Sake Adviser, Reuben RodillasGM Torii Noodle Bar at Kanki, and Gee DararouksaDirector of Operations for Plaza Associates.

Let's Make some Ramen!

Let’s Make some Ramen! This is what we started with

Once everyone had arrived we gathered around the table and Tom gave us a quick overview of Torii and introduced Chef Alex.  Chef Alex talked a little bit about the history of the ramen noodle and what the basic ingredients are (wheat flour, salt, water and kansui).   Now the fun began!  We were each given a plate of 4 small sauce bowls and we were invited to sip and try the difference sauces and then decide which one we wanted for our final noodle bowl.  All of their noodle bar sauces are made in-house and some even take up to 6-hours to make!

Mixing it all up!

Mixing it all up!

I went with the first flavor which was a shoyu broth, a soy-based broth and the most common style, a specialty of Tokyo.  Next we stared making our own noodles!  Starting with our bread flour, we mixed, rolled, and stretched and flattened the dough through the pasta noodle maker machine.  This was really fun as we laughed and talked and took turns sharing the noodle machines.  After about 20 minutes we ended up each having a plate of noodles for dinner and a bag of noodles to-go home with us.

Rolling out the noodles

The servers came around and took your fresh made noodles along with your name and choice of sauce.  After a few minutes your noodle bowl came out and you went down the ‘noodle bar topping‘ line and added different items as you wished (pork, soft egg, scallions, tofu, fish cake, and snow peas).  It was so fun to see all of the different combinations that everyone had made as it really does represent how Torri Noodle Bar caters to each individual particular taste and flavor, I just loved the idea of creating your own noodle bar bowl!

My noodle bowl included: noodles, shoyu broth, fresh egg, pork, scallions, and snow peas.YUMMY!!!!

Finished meal ready to eat!

Finished meal ready to eat!

During the whole cooking course we also were treated with tastings of many different sake flavors!  I can’t even remember how many we tasted but they were all different: sweet, hot, cold, strong, etc.  Really good!  My favorite one tasted like spiced apples!  After we all ate dinner together, they thanked us for attending and we were each presented with a “Certificate of Participation in the Making of Ramen Noodles” and a bright green recycled bag full of coupons, special offers to Torri and Kanki, recipes, notepads and more.

Let's eat!

Let’s eat!

Torii Noodle Bar is a great location for many events…there is plenty of parking and the space is perfect for hosting private events such as baby showers, bridal showers, birthday parties, office parties, family events, and more. The staff will work with you to help create the best set-up and menu for your event.  They also offer a variety of classes each month at Torii, such as Sake & Sushi 101 and Noodle Making.  The classes are $35/per person and they can be found on the website.   I really like how ShopLocalRaleigh reaches out to community bloggers and locally owned restaurants and works to connect them together.  This event was really well done and lasted about 2-hours.

I’d like to say thank you to Jennifer Martin of SLR and all of the staff at Torii and Kanki for such a fun night!  There was also a film crew there taking pictures and making videos to use for Torii, so I am sure they got some great footage!   So overall my first experience at a noodle bar was really awesome and I’m already thinking of an event I can have there soon with friends!  And a very special thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, a high-end ladies consignment boutique with two locations, located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex, for dressing me in this beautiful blue and white silk polka-dotted sleeveless top from The Limited.  I paired it with while linen pants and it made for a crisp and cool hot July summer day outfit!  They still have tons of great summer dresses and tops, plus fantastic accessories!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!

Family Fun at the Orange County Speedway

Orange County Speedway

Orange County Speedway

If you are a small business owner and you live or work in Wake County, then you probably know that there are TONS and TONS of opportunities to network and market your business through referral groups.  One group that Smith & Smith, CPA supports (and has for years) is Triangle BNI.  A man by the name of Steve Hand, owns  Triangle BNI  (client of Smith & Smith, CPA) and is the man who is responsible to many successful business connections and ‘done business deals’in Wake County.  Blake is a member of a BNI Group in Cary called “The Next Level“, and really enjoys not only the great business leads, but also the members and friendships that have developed from the group.

His group is very active not just through their weekly meetings, but also through their community service projects that are done several times a year.  The Next Level BNI group had a Family-Social Event over the weekend at the Orange County Speedway.  Several of their club members went with their families to support club member, Dennis Sargent, Managing Attorney at Law Office of Dennis Jay Sargent Jr, PLLC.  Dennis is ‘Attorney by Day and Race Car Driver by Night‘ and he is GOOD!  Dennis was in the first race of the night, Limited Sportsman, and he placed 3rd in the race!  It was really exciting and everyone in “The Next Level” BNI group went down on the track to congratulate him.  Way to go Dennis!

Congrats to Dennis on winning 3rd Place in his race!

Congrats to Dennis on winning 3rd Place in his race!

Orange County Speedway is located in Northeastern Orange County (about 1 hour drive from Cary) and the track is 3/8ths mile around.  Our family had a great time at the race and they loved watching the race cars and mini trucks during their own races.  My kids also loved the goody-bags that were handed out at the door by Orange County Speedway sponsor, Johnson Maserati of Cary.  The goody-bag had several pieces of candy and cool little trinkets for the kids.  There was a SUPER MOON that night too, so everyone loved watching it come up over the trees, so cool!

Sorting Shoes and So Much More at Note In the Pocket

Shoes to be donated to Wake County Students

Shoes to be donated to Wake County Students

One of my favorite things about working at Smith & Smith, CPA is the opportunity to volunteer and give back to my community.  I have the privilege of being a member of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and through that membership comes many opportunities to volunteer.   Last night I worked with several club members at Note In the Pocket in North Raleigh.  I met Note In the Pocket a few years ago and have included them in my blog before.  Last night as my first time at their actual facility and their place is very organized and impressive.

Shoes ready to go!

Shoes ready to go!

Note In the Pocket has a simple mission of providing clothing to impoverished and homeless children in Wake County.   Our service project last night included sorting, tagging and organizing over 200 pairs of shoes that were recently donated by another location nonprofit.  We had six club members there and we worked together in teams of two.  While I was sitting there helping to sort and tag shoes, I thought about those kids in Wake County who would receive these shoes…what it must be like to walk in their shoes…to not have the clothing necessities to wear to school that many of us have and simply take for granted.

Walk a Mile in their shoes

Walk a Mile in their shoes

I’m very grateful for Note in the Pocket and for the lives they are changing and the families they are helping.  The shoes we organized last night will be delivered in the next week to Wake County Social Workers who will get them to the families and kids in need.  It brings me great joy to think of the smiles on their faces and to know that they will now walk miles in a new pair of shoes.  :)

Making a GO with FitBloggin’14 in Savannah

FitBloggin'14

FitBloggin’14

A few months ago I caught wind of a really cool conference that was going to be held in late June in Savannah, Georgia.  I had been to Savannah earlier this year with some special friends to celebrate one of their milestone birthdays, we had a fabulous trip and created memories that will last a lifetime!  I loved being in Savannah, as it had been years since I had last been there to visit (my childhood on a Girl Scout trip if I remember correctly…) So when the FitBloggin’14 Conference popped up, it all just seemed to fit.

DIY Success: The Tech Tools Class

DIY Success: The Tech Tools Class

This event had many exciting options, a chance to interact and engage with other awesome bloggers & marketing-minded people, interactive classes to learn more about social media technology and trends, an opportunity to develop and grow my marketing abilities for Smith & Smith, CPA, plus a chance to visit this cool city again, I was completely determined to go!  Living in Cary & the Triangle Area gives me lots of opportunities to network, market and grow the client base for Smith & Smith, CPA ,but there is also some really good value in getting OUTSIDE of your town/area and learning from others, so for many weeks I was highly anticipating attending FitBloggin’14!  The entire conference was held at the lovely Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Savannah on the River.  I love the view from the Windows Restaurant Lounge & Bar, located in the hotel lobby, as it offers beautiful views of the Savannah River and River Street.

FitBloggin'14 in Savannah

FitBloggin’14 in Savannah

The conference is organized by a dynamic girl named Roni of SkinnyMinnyMedia.  Roni was easy to find at the conference and was very helpful with any questions during the whole FitBloggin’ Conference.  Her energy was contagious and you could tell that she was really passionate about this event!  The entire 3 1/2 day schedule was jammed packed with opportunities to learn, grow and develop your marketing and blogging skills.  Thursday afternoon kicked off with an Expo and Vendor booth meet and greet, followed by an Evening Welcome Mixer, Personal Badge Decorating and Ice-Breaker Extravaganza.

Class with Andre on Smartphone Videos

Class with Andre on Smartphone Videos

Friday was another full day with a great class I took called “Taking Your Smartphone Video to the Next Level” (tips on content, lighting, volume, coding, etc) – taught by a guy named Andre Smith of Mission Meltdown.  Following that class was the lunch sponsored by RunDisney (click to read the Blog Posting about that cool experience).  After lunch I went to two more classes: “Working with Brands on Google+” and “Monetizing and Affiliate Marketing”.  The Affiliate Marketing class was probably my favorite one, it was taught by Sarah Beeskow Blay of ShareASale.  Sarah took time after the class to sit with me and review my blog on a one-on-one basis.  We did some brainstorming together and she helped me come up with some fantastic ideas to take my blog to the next level (stay tuned for those updates & improvements coming soon!)

Google+ Class

Google+ Class

The evenings were spent with mixing and sharing ideas, plus great speakers and panelist sharing their thoughts and opinions on blogging trends.  Saturday was another great day of learning with classes on “How to Pitch Your Brand”, “Reading the Find Print: Federal Guidelines and Other Blogging Legalities”, “DIY Success: The Tech Tools” and “DHTML Class“.  Carrie D. Photography were there to cover the entire FitBloggin’14 Conference and offered attendees a free head shot down by the river (Thanks Carrie!!!!)

Toucan Cafe

Toucan Cafe

Dinner was on-your-own for Saturday night so I joined some new friends that I made at a very cool and unique restaurant in Savannah called Toucan Cafe.  The Toucan Cafe was simply amazing and probably some of the BEST FOOD I have ever had!  Everything here is made right from scratch (except the crab) and tasted amazing!  I had the Grilled Corvina, a new dish for me and everything was perfect from the presentation to the flavor and taste!  I took a picture of some of the meals my friends had because they were simply stunning, the Seafood Risotto and the Black & Blue Ribeye Steak.

More from Toucan Cafe

More from Toucan Cafe

I really enjoyed dinner at the Toucan Cafe and had a great time getting to know my new friends.  There were plenty of opportunities to exercise and stay fit at the FitBloggin’14 Event, a major focus for many of the attendees!   They offered early morning runs around Savannah (in groups of course), plus mid-day Yoga and Zumba classes.  It was so nice to see different parts of Savannah, paralytically the Forsyth Park, a 30 acre park in the downtown historic district.

NFL Selfie

NFL Selfie

One of the coolest parts of the whole conference was a chance to meet and get a ‘selfie’ with Arian Foster, NFL Player with the Houston Texans.  Arian is a spokes person for Chia Bar and part of the Health Warrior Brand.  Overall I was extremely pleased with FitBloggin’14 and know that I am bringing back some fantastic marketing ideas and blogging tips that will help me push Smith & Smith, CPA forward in our area.  I’m looking forward to getting these ideas implemented as soon as I can.  FitBloggin’15 will be held in Denver!  Maybe I’ll be there……  On the way back on Sunday I drove out to Hilton Head Island to enjoy the beach for a few hours. It was a beautiful day to just relax and enjoy the sun, sand and sounds of the beach.  A perfect way to end a perfect weekend!

Lunch was hosted and sponsored by RunDisney.  And yes….guess who was here!!?!  Mickey Mouse himself!  The RunDisney lunch sponsor spoke on the importance of using different social media platforms to get your message across.  One example was their upcoming Star Wars Marathon Race in January 2015.  RunDisney used several different social media platforms over a series of a few hours to announce the race (Twitter, Instagram video, Facebook post) and the race sold out within a few hours!   All very good info to know and use!  Thanks to Sarah Canney of www.runfargirl.com and her friend Jes D’Avanza from Runladylike.com for letting me join in with them on the RunDisney Mickey Mouse picture!

Triangle Ladies Networking Luncheon

Ladies Networking Luncheon with Beth Wood

Ladies Networking Luncheon with Beth Wood

Today was the Triangle Ladies Power Luncheon, one of the BEST ladies networking events in the Triangle area!  It was so much fun to see everyone as the luncheon has moved to QUARTERLY for the 2014 year so the last time we had a meeting was in March!   Smith & Smith, CPA is proud to be a GOLD Sponsor for this ladies networking luncheon, and part of being a GOLD sponsor means we get 4 guest seats, a VIP lunch table, a vendor table in a prime location, mention on the website & emails, plus a shout-out from the podium by Carrie Peele (Founder of TLPL and Blue Diamond Limo).   Trevor and Alicia went with me from our office and Susan Pruskin of Susan Pruskin Consulting and Maura Silverman of TAP Unlimited were also our guests today.

Maura and Becca

Maura and Becca

Maura’s signature event with TAP Unlimited is this Friday night and she was very excited to share the news with other ladies at the networking luncheon.  We had our vendor table set-up with the Las Vegas Jackpot Machine (thanks to Beth Donnor of Diversified Planning for letting us borrow it) and as ladies stopped by our table they got to play around or two on the slot machine as we encouraged them to “Not Gamble with Accounting & Taxes”.   The ladies networking luncheon speaker was Billie Redmond, CEO for TradeMark Properties.  Billie shared her story of being a top leader in the predominately male world of commercial real estate.  Her company is 30 years old and has been very successful over the years.  She talked about keeping things in perspective and about a book she read a few years ago and changed her outlook on life and business.  I enjoyed hearing her speak.   I was happy to have Trevor there with me to experience a different type of marketing & networking event.  Trevor is our Summer Intern from Appalachian State and is planning to major in Accounting and Marketing.

WBON of Cary

WBON of Cary

I had the pleasure of introducing him to Beth Wood, CPA and North Carolina State Auditor after the meeting. WBON of Cary was also there as a Silver Sponsor for the 2014 year and were busy promoting their upcoming Summer Social on July 15th at Patrick Jane’s Pizza in Cary (beside of Trader Joes).  They had a very creative table and marketing technique today!   I look forward to the next Triangle Ladies Networking Luncheon that will be held on September 9th with the Founder of Dress for Success, Pat Nathan, as the guest speaker!  Thank you so much to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex, for dressing me for the ladies networking luncheon in the Hana Cap-Sleeve Colorblock White & Yellow Kate Spade dress.  I had SO many compliments on the bright yellow and encouraged them all to check out the summer dresses, shoes and fabulous accessories at MGC!!

A DELICIOUS Time on the Charleston Culinary Tour

Culinary Tour

Culinary Tour

This past weekend Blake and I slipped down to Charleston, South Carolina with friends Dennis and Dana Sargent.  Dennis is a long-time friend and referral partner of Smith & Smith, CPA and happens to be in the same BNI group as Blake.  Blake and Dennis have become good friends over the years, so they invited us along to Charleston to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary.  Best part was that they let ME plan the whole weekend!  We had a great time in this charming southern town and one of the coolest things we did was a Charleston Culinary Tour.  I’ve heard about culinary tours in other towns (like Asheville, NC) but this was our first time experiencing one firsthand.  And I have NOTHING but GOOD things to say about the whole culinary tourCharleston Culinary Tours offers a series of four tours that are held on different days of the week and at different times.

Tour Begins

Tour Begins

They include: Historic Downtown, Upper King Street, Chef’s Showcase at the Farmer’s Market and Mixology Tour.  They cover over 30 different restaurants & bars and each tour is different and unique.  The Charleston Culinary Tour is a great way to experience Charleston history, food and drinks all at once!  We did the Historic Downtown Charleston Culinary Tour on Friday afternoon at 2:00pm.  Our tour included visiting three different restaurants and tasting eight different dishes.

Eli's Table

Eli’s Table

We met up with our tour guide, Glenn Morehead (Managing Partner) and the others at Southend Brewery and Smokehouse.  We had 3 mini-tastings here including she-crab soup, barbeque with coleslaw and beef brisket.  Very good! As we walked from restaurant to restaurants Glenn engaged the group by telling us stories about Charleston and highlighting other restaurants along the way.  Our second stop was Eli’s Table.

Goat Cheese Salad at The Drawing Room

Goat Cheese Salad at The Drawing Room

This restaurant takes pride in having ingredients that are from local farmers and delivered on a daily basis.   The manager came out to greet our table and shared a little bit about their menu and their food culture.  We had watermelon gazpacho (OMG….sooooo good and my first time having this dish!!!) plus some delicious shrimp and grits (again, a first for me!)  On the way to our next stop Glenn took us past a church where we learned the difference between a graveyard and  cemetery, plus more fascinating historical points about Charleston.

Cake Pop Dessert

Cake Pop Dessert

Glenn pointed out how important a head chef is to a restaurant in Charleston, as there are over 800 restaurants in the Charleston/Mount Pleasant area and more than 1,000 bars! WOW!  Our last stop was at The Vendue The Drawing Room, and the Head Chef, Jon, came out to our table and talked about our dishes.  I think this was my FAVORITE place as the salad, fish and dessert were all just so delicious and again, foods/dishes that I have never had before!

Dinner with friends at Burwells

Dinner with friends at Burwells

The salad had goat cheese, the fish had been caught fresh that morning and the dessert was cake pops without the stick!   Yummy yummy!   The culinary tour ended after dessert around 4:30pm and we slipped upstairs to the rooftop to see check out the view.   I knew we were going to have fun on the Charleston Culinary Tour, but it really went on to surpass my expectations!   Thanks to Glenn for a great tour and a fantastic experience! Glenn was able to help recommend other places for dinner during our visit and upon his recommendation we went to Burwell’s StoneFireGrill on Saturday night and it too was wonderful! My college girlfriend, Lindsey, and her boyfriend, Tim, joined us for dinner too.   We ordered the hot-lava rocks where we cooked our own appetizer steaks and our main entrees were also very good.  Blake said it was one of the best steaks he’s ever had.  Lindsey and I shared the hamburger (based on good reviews on YELP) and they were correct!

The Black Fedora with the CLOWN

The Black Fedora with the CLOWN

After dinner at Burwell’s we went on the Dark Side of Charleston Tour with Bulldog tours.  The tour was good and indeed lives up to the name of dark’ and for ‘adults only’.  The rest of our weekend included other great places to eat, a visit to The USS Yorktown and Fort Sumter, plus a fantastic evening at The Black Fedora, a local Comedy Murder Mystery Theater.  We had the best time at The Black Fedora and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone going to Charleston who wants something fun and totally different!  So for an easy 4 1/2 hour drive down I95, you can have a totally wonderful weekend exploring Charleston!  Only thing is that you need MORE then just a weekend!
