5 Things You MUST Know When Starting a Business

Starting a Business

Starting a Business

So, do you have an idea that you just can’t wait to share with the world?  Have you developed a business service that you KNOW is gonna make you millions!!?!  You have a product in mind that will fly off the shelves?  Sounds like you are READY to start a business!  BUT WAIT!!!!!!!   Are you really ready????    Check out these TOP 5 Things you MUST Know When Starting a Business…trust me, they will save you a lot of time & worry in the long run!  And sure, some of them will seem like “simple-no-brainer-things-to-do”, but you would be surprised at how many people DON’T do these things when they start a business!  And if you are going to have employees, make sure you take to heart the section about federal and state forms that need to be completed to get your business up and going!

5 Things You MUST Know About When Starting a Business

1)  You need to secure an Employer Identification Number, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number.  Do this FIRST as many of the other forms will require it.   They are issued by the IRS to employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnership, nonprofits, trusts, estates, certain individuals and other business entities for tax filing & reporting purposes.  You can do this by going online through the IRS website or by phone.

2) After you get the EIN, you need to complete forms to establish an account with the State for payroll tax withholding, sales tax (if necessary) and Unemployment Insurance Registration.

3) Get your payroll record keeping in order!  Payroll record keeping & reporting can be a very time consuming process, please make effort to make sure it is done correctly from the beginning!  This will save you a lot of headache in the long-run.  Consider hiring a local payroll agency to help you if you are uncomfortable doing this yourself.   Call Smith & Smith, CPA for some local payroll personal recommendations.

4) The W-4 Form.   As a business owner, you need to get your employees to fill out the W-4 Form.   This is used to calculate their federal income tax withholding.  To complete this form, make sure you have their current address and their social security number….two crucial pieces of information!

5) The I-9 Form.  This is to be completed by YOU, the employer.   This verifies that the employees are legally permitted to work in the US.

BONUS TIPS!   Who doesn’t love a BONUS TIP!?!  Here are a FEW Bonus Tips for Starting a Business

Bonus Tip 1)  Set-up a separate business bank account!

Bonus Tip 2)  Do NOT co-mingle your business funds with your person funds!  Use a separate charge card (if you need one) to keep purchases from co-mingling.

Bonus Tip 3)  Create a NETWORK of trusted professionals.   Hire a CPA!  Connect with an attorney, get to know your banker, find a Financial Advisor, etc.   It’s a good idea to KNOW these people before you NEED them!  And trust me, there will come a time when you will NEED them!   Give us a call at Smith & Smith, CPA and we’ll connect you!

Bonus Tip 4)  Decide what avenue of social media is best for you and get it started.   It is a time & age when having some kind of social media attached to your business is A MUST!  From a website that is updated on a regular basis, to a Business Facebook page, a blog, Instagram account, SOMETHING!  Social media is time consuming but it needs to be done!  If you don’t have the time & skills to do it yourself, then HIRE it out!  There are TONS of companies who can help you mange your social media presence.

29th Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park

20150606_194142Well, we pulled that one off as a huge SUCCESS!  Last Saturday, June 6th, was the 29th Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park for the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  And it has proven to be our BIGGEST event yet!  Final numbers are still rolling in, but it looks like we served 950 meals in the 2 1/2 hour time frame!   That is amazing!

The weather was perfect and we had lot of new walk-in traffic too.  The bluegrass band sounded great, the Silent Auction Table was very busy and the bids were flying left and right, the Bake Sale Table was stacked FULL of delicious treats and goodies, plus several of our scholarship students came along with their families.  We had over 50 new sponsors this year and many of the came to enjoy the Pig Pickin’.

The Eastern North Carolina BBQ, provided by White Swan BBQ, was a HUGE hit and everyone got a nice selection of chicken, BBQ, stew, coleslaw, potato salad, plus lemonade and tea.  Smith & Smith, CPA has been a proud sponsor for the Pig Pickin’ in the Park for many years as a Hog Wild Sponsor.  Blake and I have also been supporting the Pig Pickin’ in the Park for the past 3 years as a Whole Hog Sponsors.   All of the money raised from our event goes back into the community through college scholarships and local & global humanitarian projects.   I had a blast at the Pig Pickin in the Park and always appreciate the support of my family.   We had a fun time eating together and the kids played outside on the courtyard.   Thanks to all of our sponsors, friends and family for making the 29th Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park a year for the record books!

Brown Bag Ministry for Those In Need

20150530_142818Over the weekend I had a really cool opportunity to volunteer with my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at the Brown Bag Ministry in Apex, NC.   The Brown Bag Ministry is a complete volunteer nonprofit that serves the homeless and hungry in central North Carolina.  Volunteers consist of individuals, families and groups…they gather at five different sites on Saturday mornings to prepare lunches that are then distributed throughout Durham and Wake County.   Lisa-Gray, who is a member of our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club, suggested the Brown Bag Ministry as a great volunteer opportunity for our club members.  We participated back in the Fall and everyone loved it, so we did it again and I think it will become a regular event for us! 20150530_142400 We had 8 members participate on Saturday and I was able to take along our youngest son, Mark.  It is really hard to find volunteer opportunities for kids, so I was THRILLED that Mark was able to go! He did so great and helped pack lunch, made sandwiches and put desserts in the bags.  I LOVED working with him and watching him find the joy in making a bagged lunch for someone in need.  Our location was at one of the Catholic churches in Apex and we did over 600 lunch bags.

The entire Brown Bag Ministry prepares over 2,700 lunches each Saturday.   Volunteering is really amazing as you just never know who else you are going to see when you are there.  I was happy to see and longtime friend and client, Chris Raneri, there with his wife and children.  Chris is the owner of CPR Construction and a client of Smith & Smith, CPA.  Chris has also done some really great work in our office over the years.

I look forward to packing with Brown Bag Ministries again…I think it is something I could do every weekend if my time allowed!  Thank you to Brown Bag for their work and lives they are changing.

Frill Shark Tank Guest Speaker at Cary Chamber

Frill Clothing owners, Sharon and Kate, speak to Business of Women

Frill Clothing owners, Sharon and Kate, speak to Business of Women

Last Thursday was the FINAL luncheon meeting in the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women Luncheon Series.  This annual event runs from September to May and features a monthly ladies lunch meeting at Prestonwood Country Club along with a guest speaker, door prizes and networking!  I rarely miss this event and always enjoy meeting new Cary Chamber members as well as seeing friends & referral partners, plus the delicious food!!!!  For the final Business of Women in the 2014-2015 year, the Cary Chamber invited local celebrities and female entrepreneurs, Kate and Sharon, owners of Frill Clothing to come and share their business story.

Friends at the Cary Chamber Business of Women

Friends at the Cary Chamber Business of Women

Frill was recently featured on the popular television show, Shark Tank, where they received a deal with two of the shark investors.  The Cary Chamber thought it would be a great idea to invite them to speak and share their experience with other professional working women and other female entrepreneurs.   Sharon and Kate shared their story from the beginning of how they met in grade school, kept in touch over the years, tossed the idea back and forth about going into business together, how they got their idea and discovered an unmet need in the niche market of the Sorority world on college campuses (not only in USA, but also in other countries) and the rest is history!

Pam (Wells Fargo) and Debbie (Anthony Delauney Ameriprise Financial)

The girls were very candid about their experiences from their college internships, all the way to working with local seamstress & picking designs, to some challenges they have faced along the way, plus changes they have made and obstacles they have overcome.  I really enjoyed hearing the ladies speak and their story is very inspiring!  Sharon mentioned several times that it just takes determination and a willingness to succeed, no matter what the cause!   Thanks so much to the Cary Chamber for hosting Sharon and Kate and for closing out the Business of Women Luncheon Series with such a fun presentation!    Smith & Smith, CPA is proud to represent Frill Clothing as their CPA and we know they have years of success ahead of them!  I look forward to the Business of Women starting again in September 2015!

Local to the Table!  Farm to Table with Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen in Cary

20150520_102925

Dinner at Lucky 32

Last night was such a fun time!  Our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had a very nice dinner event with a Farm to Table Dinner and Presentation at Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen in Cary.   The General Manger, Shane Garrity, is a member of our club and worked with me on plans to put the evening event together.  We had a limited number of seats, 24, and it filled up right away!   Guest arrived around 5:30pm and we started our program promptly at 5:45pm.

Perfect time!

Perfect time!

Shane was our host and told us the story of Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen, about they started, their mission about supporting local farmers and giving back to the community.  They also reach out to those in the community who are often overlooked and underprivileged.  We heard about the other restaurants & hotels who are part of the Lucky 32 family, which are all located in Greensboro, NC.  Shane also introduce their Head Chef, who just so happens to be self-taught in culinary!  He also took time to share different points about the food, farms, and other interesting facts about Lucky 32.

Foggy Ridge Cider

Foggy Ridge Cider

Our first course was an appetizer of Voodoo Pig Bread, paired with Foggy Ridge Cider.  Sooooooo good!   The cider is from a farm in Virgina and the Voodoo Pig Bread is a favorite at Lucky 32!  The Voodoo Sauce is made & bottled local and sells at the restaurant and also at local grocery stores.   Other vendors for this course include Goat Lady Diary and Heritage Farm.   Our next course was the main entree and was Cornmeal Catfish, Collard Greens, Old Mill of Guilford Creamy Grits paired with Red Oak Beer.  Those who picked the vegetarian option had the famous Lucky 32 Black Bean cakes with sour cream sauce and kale greens.   Talking points for this course included Carolina Classics Catfish Farm, Collard Greens from Southern Living, Old Mill of Guilford and Red Oak Brewery.  Our final course was homemade season ice cream (cherry chocolate-chip flavor) and fresh coffee!

Coffee and Ice Cream

Shane talked about the coffee from Counter Culture Coffee in Durham and how they roast the beans AFTER they have received the order and that Lucky 32 uses their Blend #46 but that their sister restaurants use a different blend.  The coffee was really good and the cream too!  Shane and Chef opened the conversation up to questions and talked more about their vendors, the level of quality and trust that they expect and the little things that make them different from other restaurants in town. It was such a fun night and a BIG thank you to Shane and Chef and the wonderful waitstaff for taking such great care of our event!  I know everyone had a fabulous time!  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for selecting the coral maxi dress for me to wear!  Her stores, located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex are BUSTING at the doors with all kinds of beautiful summer dresses, tops, skirts and accessories!  Shop there and tell them Becca sent you to get 10% off your total purchase!

Scholarship Program for WBON of Cary 2014-2015

Becca Smith & Steve Hand

Becca Smith & Steve Hand

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the WBON of Cary monthly May luncheon.  I was thrilled to hear my good friend and client of Smith & Smith, CPA, Steve Hand, speak on none other then NETWORKING!!!!!!  Steve is the MASTER of Networking in this area and is the proud owner of Business Network International (BNI) for a good majority of the state of North Carolina.  I have learned so much from Steve over the years about networking etiquette, the Do’s and Don’ts and so much more.   Steve gave an excellent presentation and covered such topics like “You need to build deeper relationships and put systems in place in order to generate and predict your referrals, Join a networking group and work it hard, get your target market identified and work from there.”  He also said that having people who like, care and respect you is NOT ENOUGH for them when it comes to sending referrals.  You have to make sure they KNOW what you do and HOW to refer to you.

WBON Scholarship 2014-2015

WBON Scholarship 2014-2015

He covered a 5-Step Referral Process and took a few questions at the end.   Steve is a dynamic speaker and kept the group of women engaged through his entire talk by asking different people to help read questions and using real-life example.  Great job Steve!   Yesterday was also the day that the WBON of Cary awarded their 2014-2015 Scholarship Fund Recipients.  Each year WBON of Cary gives 2-3 scholarships to women business owners and professional working women in the Cary Community.   I had applied this year and was THRILLED to have been awarded one of the scholarships!!!!   Such an exciting surprise!  WBON of Cary had been a large part of my networking and marketing focus over the past 10 years and to receive this scholarship is such an honor!

Best Night of Baseball EVER…with The Miracle League of the Triangle

Leadership Cary at The Miracle League of the Triangle

Leadership Cary at The Miracle League of the Triangle

Last night was our Community Service Project with our Leadership Cary Class of 2014-2015.   We were signed-up to be Volunteer Baseball Buddies for The Miracle League of the Triangle.  The Vision of The Miracle League is “Everyone deserves to experience joy and community through baseball” and operate with their Mission “The create positive life experiences for children and adults with specials needs and for their families through baseball.”  The Miracle League opened their field in Cary, NC on September 16 2006 and had their first season on the Andy’s Foundation Ball Field with more than 100 payers and 200 volunteers from around the Triangle area.   There are now two fields (one in North Raleigh) and they serve over 400 players on 30 teams.

My baseball buddy, Andrew

My baseball buddy, Andrew

I’ve been familiar with The Miracle League for a while now as my good friend, Seth Walter, has played baseball with them for several years.    I had a chance to go see him play late last year and LOVED watching him smile and celebrate as he hit the ball and ran the bases!  When you play baseball on the field, there are NO OUTS, NO STRIKES, everyone gets a chance to hit the ball-regardless of their ability, and everyone WINS!   It’s such a positive and encouraging atmosphere.  Last night with my first chance to serve as a “baseball buddy”.  We had about 20 members of our Leadership Cary group there to help volunteer and it was SO MUCH FUN!  There were two games played, each games last about 1 hour 15 mins.   Once you arrive and get signed-in and watch a Volunteer Orientation Video, you are then paired up with a baseball player for the game, you are their baseball buddy!  You stay with them through the whole game, you help them at bat, run the bases with them, and assist in the field.   It’s soooooooo much fun and very rewarding to be out there helping.  The players abilities range but their smiles are all the same!  They LOVE IT!

Baseball Field

Baseball Field

My baseball player was Andrew.  He has autism and was non-verbal but we had a great time playing baseball together.  He was really good at throwing the ball and had a good arm at the bat too!   His mom and dad were there to watch him play.   He really liked the bright yellow baseball that we were throwing together during warm-up.   I enjoyed being his buddy and here are a few pictures from last night to share.   Thanks again to Christie Moser of the Cary Chamber and program facilitator for Leadership Cary, for selecting this as our Community Service Project!

I think it was a fantastic night!
