Duck Donut OBSESSED and Tax Materials!

What to Bring for Your Taxes

What to Bring for Your Taxes

So here we are at the end of January 2015.  Most people have already started to receive their W2s, 1099s and other important tax documents from their employer, bank and other institutions.  Many people ask us each year “What Do I Need to Bring In for my Taxes”.   We’ve tried to make this easy for our clients by putting a list on our website under a tab that says “What To Bring For My Taxes”.  Take a look, some of the items may apply to you and some may not.  Gather the ones that do and go ahead and drop them by our office and we’ll get started on filing your 2014 tax return!

There is this NEW place in town that is causing quite a stir…it’s called Duck Donuts!  I heard about them a few weeks ago when my good friend, Christine Johnson, asked me if I had been over to the store to have one.  Being that the store is right across the street from our office, she was shocked that I hadn’t been over to taste the goodness!   I finally  had a chance to try Duck Donuts this week…not just once, but TWICE!   On Wednesday, I attended the Cary Chamber Ribbon Cutting for Fonke Chiropractic.

Ben Fonke of Fonke Chiropractic

Ben Fonke of Fonke Chiropractic

The owner, Ben Fonke, is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA so I was happy to be able to be there to support him.  Ben showed us around his office and did a demonstration of the spinal decompression technique that they use in his chiropractic office to help ease lower back pain in their patients.  Ben’s whole family was there to support him (so cool) and they had some very nice food to share in the celebration…which included a box of Duck Donuts!  So I gave in and tried them…...HOOKED!   I came back to our CPA firm still licking my lips!

Ribbon Cutting Duck Donuts

Blake sent me back across the street to pick up a box for the whole office!   So I text Christine and told her the GOOD NEWS….We are DUCK DONUT BELIEVERS!!!  Then on Thursday, Duck Donut had their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, also with the Cary Chamber.  I was privileged to be able to attend and the owners, Kelly and Brandon Trimyer are soooooooo nice!  They gave everyone who attended the ribbon cutting a box of donuts to take with them!  Cheers to a new fun business in town that is adding some yummy goodness…and yet sadly, making my skinny jeans a little less skinny….Happy Weekend!!!!!   See you in February 2015!

Confusion Over Taxes and the New Health Law

Sample Chart on Affordable Health Care Law

Sample Chart on Affordable Health Care Law

Our CPA Firm has already received a ton of calls about the New Health Care Law…wanting to know how it is going to impact them and what they should plan for.  The honest truth is that it has been confusing for everyone, even those considered to experts in those areas, like Health Insurance Agents and CPAs.  So when it comes to the new health care laws and filing yours taxes, there doesn’t seem to be a really clear cut-and-dry answer as to how it is all going to play out.  One thing for sure though, is to make sure you have made your Obamacare Health Care election by the deadline of February 15th, which is just a little under 2 1/2 weeks away from today!   In order to avoid some serious penalties (or TAX, as it should be called) you need to follow the health law’s open enrollment period and sign-up by February 15th.  I did some online research and found a good article that pretty much explains the whole complex issue.  Here is a LINK for the article.  The article covers some good examples and shows how the Affordable Care Act will show up on your tax form.   The article is part of a reporting partnership with NPR, WNPR, KQED and Kaiser Health News.

On a lighter note, I was happy to attend the 4th Friday Social sponsored by ShopLocalRaleigh.  The January event followed the 3-year tradition of being held at Peachy Keen Boutique and Joint Venture Jewelry in Cary.  Thanks to Jennifer Martin for leading this great group of local business owners!  It’s always a fun event with lots of networking and sharing of those small business joys, stresses and success stories!  ShopLocalRaleigh has a FULL calendar of great events coming up, including the Brewgaloo festival in downtown Raleigh that will feature over 70 breweries in North Carolina!  An event NOT to be missed!  Thanks to ShopLocalRaleigh for all that they do to keep small business growing and thriving in Wake County and beyond!

Leadership Cary Explores Health & Medical in and around Cary

Leadership Cary Medical & Health Day

Leadership Cary Medical & Health Day

On Thursday, January 22nd 2015, Leadership Cary held their second January session, Health & Medical Services.  I was very excited to attend as the agenda was packed full of great programs all day long!  We began at WakeMed Cary Hospital and Leadership Cary participants who arrived early had the opportunity for Full Lipid Cholesterol Screening and Blood Pressure Checks by the Corporate & Community Health Team at WakeMed Cary.  I took advantage of this service and am proud to say that my Total Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, TC/HDL Ratio, LDL Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Fasting Glucose, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate all looked great!  Whew!!

Translation Services at WakeMed Cary

Translation Services at WakeMed Cary

Our first speaker was David Coulter, Senior Vice President and Administrator for WakeMed Cary Hospital.   Following Mr. Coulter, we heard from Dr. West Paul, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer about the Safety, Services and Quality at WakeMed.  Dr. Paul challenged us to think of why and how we choose our healthcare providers and what we expect our outcomes to be.  He shared some good tips about looking into the quality of care on review sites before selecting doctors and hospitals.   He also talked about the HELP program at WakeMed Cary H-Hospital E-Elder L-Life P-Program and the “Silver Spoons”-a group that helps feed those hospital patients who need assistance.

Da Vinci Robotic Machine

Da Vinci Robotic Machine

Dr. Brain Klausner, Internal Medicine and Medical Director for WakeMed Key Community Care ACO spoke next and shared some interesting stories about his years in Boston and how they tried to help the homeless get care and keep them from coming to the ER 5-7 times a week.  The next part was my favorite as we heard from Jennifer Lee about the Translations Services for patients, which involves a ‘skype’ style conversation with a doctor who also speaks the same language.  WakeMed has access to 17 difference language interpreters and another 180 language conversions in their database.  The whole demo was so impressive!  Then we had a tour of the Pathology Lab….don’t touch ANYTHING!!!!

CPR Session

CPR Session

Our last stop before lunch was soooooooo cool….the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Machine!  I’ve never seen anything like this before in person!  We were able to interact with the surgical robot and even got to do a ‘mock surgery session’, I was pretty good if I do say so myself!   We had a delicious lunch in the Points West Cafe in the hospital and then heard from Tara Wind, Clinical Dietitian at WakeMed Cary about the Meredith College Dietetic Internship Site Preceptor program.

Say NO to big sugary drinks! Tara Wind, Clinical Dietitian

Say NO to big sugary drinks! Tara Wind, Clinical Dietitian

Tara gave us some tips on choosing healthy foods….her biggest advice was to READ the LABELS (or buy fresh foods!) and to STAY AWAY FROM THE “NO SUGAR ADDED” FRUIT DRINKS at the store!  Tara is also a blogger and you can find her blog at A Preceptor’s Musings.  After Tara, we had a VERY helpful and fun session learning about CPR from Linda Barrett, Corporate & Community Health Advisor for WakeMed Cary.  Each Leadership Cary member was given a CPR Kit that included a “Mini Anne” inflatable dummy to practice with for CPR.  It was challenging to say the least and I’m glad I understand how the ‘practice’ of CPR has changed over the years and that “Any CPR is better then NO CPR” in the case of an emergency.  We then traveled to Rex Wellness Center in Cary and heard from Megan Lumley, Director of Rex Express Care and Amy Daniels of the Foundation for Rex Healthcare.  I enjoyed hearing from both of them and LOVED the ‘Rex Doctor Rap Video’.   Our final part was to tour the Rex Wellness facility, it has an indoor pool, workout rooms, exercise equipment, sauna and very nice locker rooms!

My Girlfriend's Closet

My Girlfriend’s Closet

Thanks to much to the Cary Chamber and Christie Moser for heading up Leadership Cary and putting together such a fantastic day!  Thank you also to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary and downtown Apex) for dressing me in the Kate Spade Selma Sweater Dress with All Aboard Nautical Stripes in Madrid Orange and Cream .  I had lots of compliments!  Shop their stores for the best fashions and prices in town!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% your purchase!

Family Night at Chick-fil-a Waverly Place

Owl Craft at Family Night Chick-fil-a

Owl Craft at Family Night Chick-fil-a

Each year, Smith & Smith, CPA proudly hosts the Family Night at Chick-fil-a Waverly Place in Cary, NC.   This is a night for us to interact with the community and engage with families and kids.  We get to pick a fun craft and have a section of the restaurant set-up from 5:30pm-7:30pm.   We typically have about 40-60 kids come by the table to make the craft during the 2-hour event.  It’s always a lot of fun and I try to pick a craft for Family Night at Chick-fil-a that is fun and cute, but also functional and one that I can stick a promotional label on for Smith & Smith, CPA.

Owl Picture Frame Family Night Chick-fil-a

Owl Picture Frame Family Night Chick-fil-a

For Family Night this January, we had a craft that featured a foam picture frame and all kinds of little owl & bird foam stickers for the kids to pick from.  Once the kids completed the frame, they were given a Smith & Smith, CPA label to put on the back that said “Whooo…Whooo…Whooo…Who Does Your Taxes?  Try Smith & Smith, CPA!  919-380-0600″.  Pretty creative if I do say so myself!   For the older kids, we had a cute Owl Craft that was pretty challenging with foam weaving and lots of stickers and parts!  But they turned out really cute and they also had a Smith & Smith, CPA label on the back.

Take a look at some of the photos from last night!  Blake, Cam, Alicia and Bob all come to eat and brought the kids along.  They had fun playing and even enjoyed making the craft too!  Thanks to Chick-fil-a of Waverly Place for letting Smith & Smith, CPA partner with you all to host Family Night.  It’s such a fun time!

Cultural Arts Day with Leadership Cary

Leadership Cary with the Hurricanes Hockey Eye

Leadership Cary with the Hurricanes Hockey Eye

Last week was the January Session meeting for Leadership Cary.  It was our Cultural Arts Day, so fun!  The day started off with a meet and greet and breakfast at the Cary Arts Center.  This facility opened a few years ago and has served as a focal point for downtown Cary.   Our first speaker was Ted Boyd, Downtown Development Manager for the Town of Cary.  Ted spoke about the changes coming to downtown Cary and how the economic activity and interest has been picking up over the past few months.  Construction has already begun on the boutique hotel that will be completed by the end of 2015 and opened in early 2016.  leadership cary 3Next we heard from Mary Davis  Wallace, Executive Director of Cary Visual Art and had a walking tour of the art all along Academy Street in downtown Cary.  The weather was cool and brisk, but we were all bundled up warm!  I enjoyed seeing all of the art and learning about the artist and how the art was selected.  I’m happy to be part of the Cary Visual Art group and helped plan the Art Ball 2014.  After the art walk tour, we boarded the bus and headed to the PNC Arena and had a tour with Mike Miller of the Carolina Hurricanes.

PNC Arena Tour

PNC Arena Tour

Mike took us all around the PNC Center, to the press box, marketing office, locker room and many other cool behind-the-scenes places!  We had lunch at the PNC Arena and heard from Jeff Merritt, Executive Director at Centennial Authority (owner of the PNC Arena building) and also from Crystal Warf, Director of Arena Marketing.   Crystal talked to us about how events are scheduled and planned and which events are coming soon to the PNC Arena.  After lunch we went to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh.   The museum is very large and newly redone with many interesting and engaging exhibits for all ages to enjoy.  After the museum we headed back to Cary.  It was a long and busy day, but I enjoyed learning so much that I didn’t know about the Cary and Raleigh area Cultural Arts.  My favorite part was getting to see the Hurricanes Hockey Team locker room and the large Hurricanes logo on the floor, that was really cool!  The Canes players NEVER step on the eye, they always walk around it…for good luck of course!

Are You Ready?  Get on the Ball with Financial Goal Setting for 2015

Financial Goal Setting for 2015

Financial Goal Setting for 2015

The new year poses lots of questions for many people, especially those who are seeking to plan and prepare their financial goals for the 2015 year.  Our CPA firm gets lots of calls and questions on financial goal setting every year during this time and we are always happy to help. More times then not, financial goal setting can vary from person to person and family to family, depending on their income, finances and lifestyle.  So a lot of times the generic answer for financial goal setting is “Well, it depends”.  However, there are some financial goal planning strategies that can be applied to everyone across the board.   There was an excellent article in the News & Observer this past weekend in the MONEY section by Holly Nicholson, a Certified Financial Planner and President of Financial Planning Services, Inc.  The article listed 6 Financial Goal Setting Strategies for the 2015 year.

ira Some of the ones highlighted were “Determining your Eligibility to make a Deductible Contribution to traditional IRA or contribution to a Roth IRA for tax year 2014″, “Looking into your Company-Sponsored Retirement Plans” and “Developing a Financial Plan for your Long-and Short-Term Goals”.  The article takes about 5-10 minutes to read and digest and I highly encourage you to read it when you get time.   While our CPA firm does not offer personal financial planning, we are happy to help you evaluate your goals with your current tax situation.  We also have a list of Financial Advisors that we trust and would be happy to refer you to one who would best fit your financial planning needs.
