BRAND NEW…Fill Your Bucket List Foundation

fill your bucket list foundatoin

Last night at my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club meeting, we had a wonderful guest speaker!  Her name is Peggy Carroll and she is the Executive Director of the Fill Your Bucket List Foundation.  Peggy is friend of two of our club members, Andy Wright and Sherry Nelson, and she was brought to our club to speak about her BRAND NEW non-profit, Fill Your Bucket List Foundation.  The term “Bucket List” was made widely popular years ago because of a movie called The Bucket List (2007) that featured Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club with Peggy Carroll of Fill Your Bucket List Foundation

The mission of Fill Your Bucket List Foundation is very simple…they strive to help adults fighting cancer find balance and joy during challenging times, they reach out to help make their wish come true and create an opportunity to shift the focus back on living life and help the person check an item off their bucket list.  Such a WONDERFUL cause!  It is very similar to Make a Wish Foundation but this one is focused on adults with cancer.  Peggy shared some of the wishes they have already granted and the stories are so heart-warming!  johnnysThey have a fundraising event coming up on Saturday, October 11th called Johnny’s Gone Fishing, to be held in Carrboro, NC.  There will be food, local artists, games, silent auction and MORE!  Hope to see you there!  Please help Fill Your Bucket List Foundation continue to grow by spreading the word about them to your friends and families, sharing & “liking” their page on Facebook and attending their fundraising events.

Have a SAFE and HAPPY weekend!

Women Marines, Lunch Speaker for the Cary Chamber

Shannon, Becca, Sergeant-Major Fortner, and Alicia, Women Marines with Cary Chamber

Shannon, Becca, Sergeant-Major Fortner, and Alicia, Women Marines with Cary Chamber

Today was the 2014-2015 Kick-Off for my FAVORITE series offered by the Cary Chamber of Commerce, the Business of Women Luncheon!  I love this event and try to attend each month if I can.  The lunches are held at Prestonwood Country Club and always draw a nice crowd of professional working women, many of whom I look forward to seeing each month!  The speaker this month was Sergeant-Major Robin Fortner of the US Marines.  She is one of 21 women in the country with this title and what an AMAZING woman she is!  Her topic was “Women and the Marines – Past, Present and Future”.  She was a very engaging speaker and took us back through the history of women in the US Marines.  She said that the male and female US Marines go through Boot Camp and Parris Island, but they are kept separated and that this is ONLY done by the Marines, the other branches combine their training.

Tia and Liz, two of my sweet banker friends and referral partners!

Tia and Liz, two of my sweet banker friends and referral partners!

She believes that the separation helps to cut down on the sexual assault and other issues that are facing the other military branches.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak and she received a standing ovation at the end of her talk.  Alicia went with me to represent Smith & Smith, CPA and we had our photo taken with Sergeant-Major Fortner, along with my friend and fellow Rotarian, Shannon Reaves, after lunch.  Our lunch table was full of fun ladies and friends, mainly bankers but it’s all about the networking!  Thank you to Delancy Carroll of the Cary Chamber for inviting Sergeant-Major Fortner to speak to us about Women Marines.  Join in with the Business of Women next month on October 16th.

A Voice from Pat Nathan with The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

Becca, Pat and Carrie

Becca, Pat and Carrie

When I hear the name, Pat Nathan, I automatically think about the great organization called Dress for Success of the Triangle.  I had the pleasure of meeting Pat Nathan several years ago and have heard her speak numerous times at different events around the Triangle.  Pat is the Founder and Past President for Dress for Success of the Triangle, a nonprofit that helps low-income women gain and maintain meaningful employment by providing them with professional working attire and accessories.

Becca and BJ Vendor Booth

Becca and BJ Vendor Booth

She spoke on Tuesday at the Triangle Ladies Power Luncheon, to a crowd of over 100 women.  Pat shared her personal story with the women in the room and really opened our eyes to her life, the struggles and success, and how she has overcome so much.  She is an inspiration to many simply by showing how she has used her life experiences to positively impact so many women around the world!  She said that “It is not about a life built on success but a life built on significance.”  She also challenged us to think about what we were ‘building’ in a life….a life of careers or a life of contributions.  Powerful food for thought!  The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, hosted by Carrie Peele, is a quarterly event for ladies in and around the Triangle area.  This month featured about 20 vendors and was buzzing with lots of networking and activity.

Donations for Dress for Success

Donations for Dress for Success

Smith & Smith, CPA has been a sponsor for this event for about 3 years now and we enjoy being involved.  Our Gold Sponsorship included a RSVP table, a vendor booth and several seats at the luncheon.  I was pleased to have guests with me this month of Patty McEwen (Cary Chamber), Stacey Sherman (Smith & Smith, CPA client) and BJ Davis of Coach BJ.  I invited BJ to share my vendor booth table and she was promoting her upcoming Emerging Women Retreats (I’m going to the one in October, please join me!)  Many women also took time to clean out their closets and brought along items to be donated to Dress for Success.  It was really awesome to see all of the suits, jackets, dresses and accessories that are going to help other women in Wake County achieve their dreams!  Thanks so much to Lois Cozart and her team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex, Lois picked out this metallic ruffle dress for me to wear and I had tons of compliments!  Shop MGC for some fabulous finds!

Note in the Pocket with Susan Pruskin Consulting

A Benefit Gala for Note in the Pocket

A Benefit Gala for Note in the Pocket

Over the weekend Blake and I had the pleasure of attending the Note in the Pocket Benefit Gala as guests of Susan Pruskin Consulting.  Susan and her husband, Steve Pruskin, were our table hosts for the evening event held at The Fallon Center of our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raleigh.  Susan and I met Dallas Bonavita, Executive Director, of Note in the Pocket, a few years ago at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and we both became hooked on their mission.   The mission of Note in the Pocket is to provide clothing to economically challenged and homeless children in Wake County.

Dessert Cakes for bidding

Dessert Cakes for bidding

Susan is now a member of their Board of Directors and serves as the Accountant for the non-profit agency.  Susan and I have both worked together to get our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club involved with some volunteer hours at Note in the Pocket, earlier this summer we spent a few hours in their warehouse sorting, tagging and sizing donated tennis shoes.  The Benefit Gala was a wonderful evening and featured some silent auction items, a Wine Wall and a LIVE Dessert Bidding Station.   This was my first time seeing a Dessert Bidding station but I loved the idea of it!  You were given a bidding card and had the opportunity to bid on a dessert for either yourself or your table.  Our table decided to pull our votes and money together and bid on our top 3 dessert choices.

"Bomb" cake

“Bomb” cake

There was a whole table of desserts and sweet treats to choose from, everything from a 5-layer coconut cake, to cupcakes, cheesecake and even a “BOMB” cake!  We ended up winning the Milk Chocolate Bar Cake...WOW…it was SO DELICIOUS but the pieces of cake were HUGE and it was impossible to finish it all!  But what a fun idea for a fundraiser!   The program included several speakers and the honorary guest speakers were Brenda Berg, of BEST NC (Business for Educational Success and Transformation in North Carolina) and Wake County Schools Social Worker, Stephanie Veeder.  Both ladies shared compelling stories and statistics of homeless children in Wake County and how Note in the Pocket reaches out to serve them, even the little ones who are in the Smart Start Early Preschool Programs.  I had to hold back a few tears during some of their stories!

Our WINNING dessert

Our WINNING dessert

Dallas and her team of volunteers at Note in the Pocket work hard everyday to help so many and their efforts are greatly appreciated.  Thank you to Susan Pruskin for inviting us to join them for this very special evening.  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet (a ladies consignment and personal styling boutique located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex) for selecting this beautiful blue & green floor length gown for me to wear to the gala!   As you start to get our your Fall and Winter clothes, jackets, shoes and accessories, please keep Note in the Pocket in mind for any items that you no longer need or want as they will gladly take your donations!

A Special Night with the Cary Chamber Awards 2014

Jennifer Robinson, Citizen of the Year 2014

Jennifer Robinson, Citizen of the Year 2014

Last night was the 2014 Cary Chamber Annual Awards Banquet.  It is an event that I look forward to attending each year and never miss!  Last night was the 52nd Annual Banquet and it was held at Prestonwood Country Club.  The evening began with a cocktail & social hour, such a fun time for Chamber members to mix and network together!  The event was SOLD OUT again, just like last year!  The keynote speaker was Sharon Decker, North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary.  I had the pleasure of hearing Mrs. Decker speak earlier this year to the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch so I was very excited to get to hear her speak again, she has such charm and charisma!

Becca, Diane and Carrie, friends on the BOD

Becca, Diane and Carrie, friends on the Cary Chamber BOD

This was my last event to serve on the Cary Chamber Board of Directors and I was honored to hand out the Ambassador of the Year Award.  This award is so special as it is voted on by the fellow Cary Chamber Ambassadors and really recognizes a person who has worked hard and given so much of their time and energy to the Cary Chamber events.   The 2014 Ambassador of the Year Award for the Cary Chamber was presented to Brad Simmons, of Allen Tate Realtors at SearstoneCongrats Brad!  Several other specials award were given out during the evening, including Business of the Year to The Umstead Hotel (congrats to my friend Carrie who works there) and also Citizen of the Year, Cary Town Council Member, Jennifer Robinson!

Brad, Ambassador of the Year

There was a surprise special recognition award presented by Brian Reid at the end of the evening to the 3 guys who started the FIRST Rotary Club in Cary 50 years ago!  I loved seeing Dick, Ralph and Jerry come to the stage and hear them all three speak briefly about Rotary in Cary and how it got started and how much it has GROWN and FLOURISHED in Cary in 50 years!  We’ve been celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Rotary in Cary since August 1st and the celebration continues!  At the end of the evening, Frank Shell, Chair of the Board of the Directors for the 2013-2014 year passed the gravel to the Incoming Chair, David Booth of Wells Fargo Bank.  Frank also called up the members of the Class of 2011-2014 Cary Chamber Board of Directors who were ending their term and presented each one of them with a Jerry Miller framed sketch of the Cary Chamber grounds.  I was part of this retiring class and I’ve already got my frame hanging proudly in my office!

Rotary in Cary for 50 years!

Rotary in Cary for 50 years!

Many thanks to the Cary Chamber staff for ALL of the hard work they do for the Cary Community!  Cary would NOT be what it is today without such a thriving and active Chamber of Commerce!  Thank you also to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, for dressing me in the long red one-shoulder dress for the event last night. I had a lot of compliments on the dress and encourage everyone to shop LOCAL, especially with other Cary Chamber members like My Girlfriend’s Closet!   MGC is having their PRIVATE Summer Clearance SALE this Sunday, September 7th at the downtown Cary location from 2:00pm – 5:00pm.  All Summer Clearance Fashions will be marked $1.00 to $10.00!  They will also be offering 10% off the entire store which features their NEW Fall season merchandise!  And remember to stop by their other store downtown Cary, MGC-Ooh La La and get 15% off all furniture now through Sunday September 6th.  Please mention that you read about the SUMMER CLEARANCE SALE in Beccasblog.com!

Deadlines for Tax Filings 2014 Are Quickly Approaching!

Deadline for Extensions for Corporations

Deadline for Extensions for Corporations

If you are like most Americans, your mind has recently been on this short work week and the Labor Day Holiday weekend that just passed.  For many of us summer is now ‘officially over‘ and we are now ready to move into Fall, cooler weather and the kids back in school.  However the cooler weather part doesn’t seem to be working out so well right now, but it will come (hopefully).  One thing that MAY NOT be on your mind but probably should be, are the approaching tax deadlinesWHAT?  I heard you think it out loud, “I thought April 15th was the deadline”…well….you are correct.  April 15th WAS the deadline if you filed your personal and business tax return on-time, thus meeting the March 15th and April 15th deadlines.

Deadline for Personal Tax Return Filings

Deadline for Extensions for Personal Tax Return Filings

However, each year many Americans file a business tax return extension (over 6 million) and a personal tax return extension (over 10 million each year) so their deadlines fall 6-months after the extension filing date, September 15th and October 15th respectively.  These deadlines are quickly approaching, so please remember to get your tax documents to your CPA as soon as possible!  No one likes waiting till the last minute and I can guarantee you that your CPA’s office is going to be busy, just like it was in April!  Smith & Smith, CPA is helping with those extension filings so give us a call if you are ready to get your tax return completed and filed on-time by the FINAL deadline to file business (corporate) tax returns and personal tax returns for the year 2013.

With Bill Leslie from WRAL News

With Bill Leslie from WRAL News

Now on a lighter note, I had the pleasure of visiting the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club today to make a brief announcement about the 3rd Annual GlobalRun4Water with Rotary District 7710.  The 5K and 1-mile water carry event is coming up in 4 weeks on Sunday, September 28th.  The speaker at the meeting today was Bill Leslie from WRAL Morning News.  Bill did an open-forum talk and entertained questions from the audience.  I enjoyed hearing him speak (he gets up at 2:30AM each day to be on the news at 4:30AM!) and had a blast meeting Shannon Reaves, Mortgage Account Executive with VantageSouth Bank.  Shannon is new to Rotary (she joined last year) and we clicked right away!  Here is a picture of us with Bill Leslie and Donna Peffley, Assistant District Governor for the 5 Rotary Clubs in Cary.   Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary (and downtown Apex) for dressing me in the Sweet Pea top.  They are getting ready for their BIG SUMMER BLOW-OUT Sale this weekend!  They will have $5 & $10 racks!  Stop by to see them and tell them you read Beccasblog.com!

Speaking of ShopLocalRaleigh, I went to their 4th Friday Morning Social today at Savvi Formalwear.  I love the ShopLocalRaleigh socials as it is a fun time to get to know other local business owners & service providers better, plus the events are always fun and a great way to start your Friday!  During the introduction part, we had a chance to answer the question “What is your biggest concern or challenge for the Fall of 2014“.    There were many different answers from getting better organized, to worrying about interest rates for clients and health insurance uncertainties.   Many thanks to Savvi for hosting us, they have LOCAL formal and bridal wear!  Check out this fun picture made in their store this morning with Robert Courts, Kim Davis, myself and Greg Whitt.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet for styling me in the cute black tank with a matching skirt!

Have a great weekend and please enter the contest below!

HOT NOW from Krispy Kreme with Smith & Smith, CPA

So the Southern Summer HEAT has decided to make a LATE appearance in the South this year…temps this week in North Carolina have been in the mid-90′s but it FEELS much hotter outside!  Speaking of HOT…we all know that famous HOT NOW sign that is related to the ONE AND ONLYKrispy Kreme DoughnutsYUMMY!    I had the pleasure of hearing Kelley O’Brien speak today at the Triangle American Marketing Association meeting.  Kelley is the Director of Social, Interactive and Digital Marketing at Krispy Kreme Doughuts and shared with Triangle AMA today about her 16+ years in digital marketing and the ways that Krispy Kreme is using it to make them successful.  The most interesting I learned form Kelley was how POPULAR the brand has been and continues to be after 77 years of starting in Winston Salem, NC, plus the HOT NOW app on the phone (so cool, who knew!?!?!?)

Becca & Christine at Triangle AMA

Becca & Christine at Triangle AMA

I went to East Carolina University and was blessed (or cursed depending on how you look at it) to have a Krispy Kreme Doughnut store RIGHT ACROSS from campus and I swear, the HOT NOW sign was ALWAYS ON!!!!!  I always enjoy the Triangle AMA meetings and a big thanks for a great meeting and the FREE HOT NOW doughnuts that were brought for all of the 200+ attendees!  They brought along 34 dozen doughnuts!  And there just happened to be several boxes left over so I brought one back to the office to share with the Smith & Smith, CPA crew!  Boy they were happy!  I mean, who doesn’t love a HOT NOW Krispy Kreme Doughnut on a HOT summer day at the end of August!?!?!  Plus, check out my cool seahorse shirt from Smith & Smith, CPA client, Vestique!

Chamber Board to Chamber Ambassador

Today was a bitter sweet day for me…this morning was my final Board Meeting with the Cary Chamber of Commerce.  I’ve had the pleasure the past three years to serve on the Board of Directors and the last two years as Vice Chair for Member Business Services.  It was such a honor to be asked to serve the three year term and it’s gone so fast!

Lunch at Ruckus with Julie and Twila

Lunch at Ruckus with Cary Chamber Ambassador Friends Julie and Twila

I’ve had a wonderful time, made some great business friends and connections and I am really going to miss it!  However, I am now free to return to serving the Cary Chamber as an Ambassador, a repeating beginning for me, as I served before as an Ambassador for about 5 years before my term on the Board.  Both of these groups are SO important to the Cary Chamber and really make it ones of the BEST (and most FUN) Chambers in Wake County!  Once a month the Cary Chamber Ambassadors get together for lunch at a local Chamber member restaurant.  Today we had a group of about 15 for lunch at Ruckus Pizza & Pasta.  It was a ‘toasty’ August day, but we had lunch outside on the patio and I enjoyed sitting with Julie Clark (TrustAtlantic Bank) and Twila Wilt (Jim Wyatt, CPA).  Thanks to Ed Twardy and Tripp Brizendine for setting up the lunch arrangements!  So cheers to Sweet Endings on the Cary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Happy Repeat Beginnings to returning as a Cary Chamber Ambassador!
