Set a Budget for Your Holiday Spending

Holiday Shopping

Holiday Shopping

So a good friend of mine kinda freaked me out the other day when she mentioned that we only had 9 weekends left till Christmas!  9 weekends??? Really, just 9 weeks!?!?!  So yes, the ‘holiday shopping & spending season’ is right upon us…2014 will roll right out the door and we’ll be greeting 2015 before you know it!  I read a great article last week about holiday spending from one of Smith & Smith, CPA‘s referral partners, Law Office of Dennis Sargent Jr, PLLC.  Dennis posted the article in his newsletter and I think the information is worth sharing.

The article covers some good holiday shopping points & tips, such as: Start Shopping Now,  Set a Limit, Make a Plan and most of all…don’t get caught up in the holiday frenzy!  Thanks Dennis for the great article!  Have any good tips that you want to share for the holiday “spending season”?  I’d love to hear them!

Women’s Leadership Council…and CAKES!

Julie & Friends

Julie & Friends

Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending the United Way of the Greater Triangle Women’s Leadership Council Annual Awards Luncheon & Dessert Auction, as a guest of my good friend, Julie Clark.  Julie works with TrustAtlantic Bank and was a proud sponsor for the luncheon event, which drew a crowd of over 300 women from around the Triangle!  The luncheon held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham featured a Dessert Auction with over 30 different cakes, pies & cupcakes!  YUMMY!  Each table worked together to bid on their top 5 desserts, hoping to win!

Over $51,000 was raised during the luncheon and it goes towards helping those in our community with Eduction, Health and Income.  I had a delightful time and enjoyed learning more about the Women’s Leadership Council.  Our table didn’t win a dessert, but we were able to taste and sample many of the delicious desserts all over the room.  Take a look at some of these fantastic cakes!  They were provided by local bakeries and restaurants and really featured some work of art!   Jennifer Trapani of The Redwoods Group was presented the 2014 Women of the Year Award and the Master of Ceremonies was Debra Morgan, Anchor for WRAL-TV (she is so cool!!!!).   They showed the 2014 Girls Leadership Camp Video and it featured Julie talking about the program  (Great job Julie!!!).

Three other awards were presented to young girls who are part of the outreach programs that are partnered by the United Way Women’s Leadership Council.  Congrats to all of the award recipients!  A job well done!  And thanks to Julie for the generous invite to attend the luncheon as your guest of TrustAtlantic Bank!

Auto Expense and Women’s Networking Groups

Holly & Becca with WBON of Cary

Holly & Becca with WBON of Cary

Yesterday I attended the WBON of Cary Fall Mega Women’s Networking event, held at Bien Venue in Apex, NC.  For several years now WBON (Women Business Owners Network) has been doing a contest during the Mega Networking events for the most original, funniest, and best overall 30-second commercials.  This is an engaging way to get everyone to be creative and to think ‘out of the box’ with their personal business introductions.  There were some really great ones this time and several of the ladies had even brought props, some rapped songs, and some just made us laugh so hard!  I try to mix up my message each time (after all, how exciting are taxes & accounting?) so this time I bought a pink steering wheel cover and ‘drove’ around the room while talking about the oh-so-popular-tax-client-question of “auto use & miles & car expenses” on taxes.  Believe it or not that earned me the MOST ORIGINAL award in the 30-Second Contest!  Check out this picture of my friend Holly Beerman, we met at the Spring Mega Women’s Networking and have become fast friends!

Organize THIS with NAPO North Carolina

Blake teaching at NAPO NC

Blake teaching at NAPO NC

Funny how fast a YEAR rolls around!  One year ago friend of mine asked if Blake would be the guest speaker at the NAPO North Carolina Meeting for September 2014.  NAPO North Carolina is the National Association of Professional Organizers.  The NAPO NC Chapter was formed in 2003 and has regular monthly meetings and training sessions for its members and industry partners.  NAPO is a non-profit group of professional organizers dedicated to helping individuals and businesses bring order and efficiency to their livesNAPO 2I have several business friends in the organizing industry and several of them were at the meting last night.  Blake was asked to present on the topic of “Small Business Accounting -What Every Business Owner Needs to Know”.  Alicia and I went along with Blake for the meeting, held in Chapel Hill.  There was a nice size crowd and we really enjoyed networking and getting to meet everyone in the room.  Blake’s presentation lasted about 45 minutes and covered such topics as: Basic Business Tips, Mileage Deductions for Your Car, Taxable Income, Itemized vs Standard Deduction, Common Small Business Misconceptions and Last Minute Tax Tips for 2014.  Blake is a very engaging speaker and does an excellent job of taking a somewhat ‘boring’ topic of taxes and accounting and makes it engaging and helpful for the audience.  We were very pleased with how engaging the members of NAPO were and they  had lot of good questions both during and after the presentation.  At the end of the presentation, we gave away 2 Smith & Smith, CPA shirts and a tailgate chair.  Congrats to Linda Zoffer of delZio Designs for winning the chair, hope you enjoy it!  Thank you to NAPO North Carolina for inviting Smith & Smith, CPA to join you for the month of September as your guest speaker.  We look forward to a professional working relationship with your members!

Painting Color Me Mine and Athena Power

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club ladies at Color Me Mine

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club ladies at Color Me Mine

Over the weekend I went to the new ‘paint your own pottery’ studio in Cary, Color Me Mine.  The owner’s name is Tammy Preston, and I had the pleasure of meeting her a few months ago at the Wind Down Wednesday Summer Concert Series.  She recently moved to Cary from up North and opened the Color Me Mine pottery studio in Waverly Place.  She is also a fairly new member to the Cary Chamber  (YEA!)  I met some of the other ladies in my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club there for a nice afternoon of painting together.  It was so fun to see all of the different pieces that each one of us picked out to paint.  You don’t have to be super artistic or creative to paint at Color Me Mine.  Their staff is friendly and they can help you with ideas and color combinations.  We’ll be able to pick-up our finished pieces on Friday.  Can’t wait to see them!

Smith & Smith, CPA has had the pleasure of being involved with the Athena PowerLink of the Triangle since it first started a year ago with Carrie Peele as the fearless leader.  The mission of Athena PowerLink is to increase the growth and profitability of women-owned businesses in the Triangle Area.  On Monday afternoon, the Governing Panel and Advisory Panel met to discuss the progress that has been made so far by our selected female business owner.  It was a very good reporting session and things seem to be moving along with great success!

BRAND NEW…Fill Your Bucket List Foundation

fill your bucket list foundatoin

Last night at my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club meeting, we had a wonderful guest speaker!  Her name is Peggy Carroll and she is the Executive Director of the Fill Your Bucket List Foundation.  Peggy is friend of two of our club members, Andy Wright and Sherry Nelson, and she was brought to our club to speak about her BRAND NEW non-profit, Fill Your Bucket List Foundation.  The term “Bucket List” was made widely popular years ago because of a movie called The Bucket List (2007) that featured Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

The mission of Fill Your Bucket List Foundation is very simple…they strive to help adults fighting cancer find balance and joy during challenging times, they reach out to help make their wish come true and create an opportunity to shift the focus back on living life and help the person check an item off their bucket list.  Such a WONDERFUL cause!  It is very similar to Make a Wish Foundation but this one is focused on adults with cancer.  Peggy shared some of the wishes they have already granted and the stories are so heart-warming!  johnnysThey have a fundraising event coming up on Saturday, October 11th called Johnny’s Gone Fishing, to be held in Carrboro, NC.  There will be food, local artists, games, silent auction and MORE!  Hope to see you there!  Please help Fill Your Bucket List Foundation continue to grow by spreading the word about them to your friends and families, sharing & “liking” their page on Facebook and attending their fundraising events.

Have a SAFE and HAPPY weekend!

Women Marines, Lunch Speaker for the Cary Chamber

Shannon, Becca, Sergeant-Major Fortner, and Alicia, Women Marines with Cary Chamber

Shannon, Becca, Sergeant-Major Fortner, and Alicia, Women Marines with Cary Chamber

Today was the 2014-2015 Kick-Off for my FAVORITE series offered by the Cary Chamber of Commerce, the Business of Women Luncheon!  I love this event and try to attend each month if I can.  The lunches are held at Prestonwood Country Club and always draw a nice crowd of professional working women, many of whom I look forward to seeing each month!  The speaker this month was Sergeant-Major Robin Fortner of the US Marines.  She is one of 21 women in the country with this title and what an AMAZING woman she is!  Her topic was “Women and the Marines – Past, Present and Future”.  She was a very engaging speaker and took us back through the history of women in the US Marines.  She said that the male and female US Marines go through Boot Camp and Parris Island, but they are kept separated and that this is ONLY done by the Marines, the other branches combine their training.

Tia and Liz, two of my sweet banker friends and referral partners!

Tia and Liz, two of my sweet banker friends and referral partners!

She believes that the separation helps to cut down on the sexual assault and other issues that are facing the other military branches.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak and she received a standing ovation at the end of her talk.  Alicia went with me to represent Smith & Smith, CPA and we had our photo taken with Sergeant-Major Fortner, along with my friend and fellow Rotarian, Shannon Reaves, after lunch.  Our lunch table was full of fun ladies and friends, mainly bankers but it’s all about the networking!  Thank you to Delancy Carroll of the Cary Chamber for inviting Sergeant-Major Fortner to speak to us about Women Marines.  Join in with the Business of Women next month on October 16th.

A Voice from Pat Nathan with The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

Becca, Pat and Carrie

Becca, Pat and Carrie

When I hear the name, Pat Nathan, I automatically think about the great organization called Dress for Success of the Triangle.  I had the pleasure of meeting Pat Nathan several years ago and have heard her speak numerous times at different events around the Triangle.  Pat is the Founder and Past President for Dress for Success of the Triangle, a nonprofit that helps low-income women gain and maintain meaningful employment by providing them with professional working attire and accessories.

Becca and BJ Vendor Booth

Becca and BJ Vendor Booth

She spoke on Tuesday at the Triangle Ladies Power Luncheon, to a crowd of over 100 women.  Pat shared her personal story with the women in the room and really opened our eyes to her life, the struggles and success, and how she has overcome so much.  She is an inspiration to many simply by showing how she has used her life experiences to positively impact so many women around the world!  She said that “It is not about a life built on success but a life built on significance.”  She also challenged us to think about what we were ‘building’ in a life….a life of careers or a life of contributions.  Powerful food for thought!  The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, hosted by Carrie Peele, is a quarterly event for ladies in and around the Triangle area.  This month featured about 20 vendors and was buzzing with lots of networking and activity.

Donations for Dress for Success

Donations for Dress for Success

Smith & Smith, CPA has been a sponsor for this event for about 3 years now and we enjoy being involved.  Our Gold Sponsorship included a RSVP table, a vendor booth and several seats at the luncheon.  I was pleased to have guests with me this month of Patty McEwen (Cary Chamber), Stacey Sherman (Smith & Smith, CPA client) and BJ Davis of Coach BJ.  I invited BJ to share my vendor booth table and she was promoting her upcoming Emerging Women Retreats (I’m going to the one in October, please join me!)  Many women also took time to clean out their closets and brought along items to be donated to Dress for Success.  It was really awesome to see all of the suits, jackets, dresses and accessories that are going to help other women in Wake County achieve their dreams!  Thanks so much to Lois Cozart and her team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex, Lois picked out this metallic ruffle dress for me to wear and I had tons of compliments!  Shop MGC for some fabulous finds!
