Small business accounting and 8-year Anniversary
Yesterday Blake and I had the pleasure of teaching a small business accounting class with the NxLevel Business Workshop
for Entrepreneurs, which is sponsored by the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) by NC State University and UNC-Chapel Hill. This class is designed to help entrepreneurs learn the skills needed to create, develop and strengthen successful business ventures. We were invited to speak on small business accounting by longtime professional business friend, Pete Donahue, who serves as a Business Counselor to the SBTDC.
Blake’s small business accounting presentation covered the basics of what every small business owner needs to know and the relationship they should have with their CPA. Blake went over some of the small business accounting most common concerns and also answered questions from both the class participates as well as the Business Counselors teaching the course, Scott Rockafellow and Mark McKnight. This is a wonderful opportunity for any small business owner seeking to build their business and those who want to make a solid plan for being successful. We look forward to working with the NxLevel Business Workshop for Entrepreneurs again and helping business owners understand small business accounting.
After the presentation, Blake and I had a delicious quick lunch at The Big Easy in downtown Raleigh. We celebrated our 8-year wedding anniversary! We love eating at The Big Easy. We discovered them a few years ago while we were downtown Raleigh at a festival. They have a really good New Orleans inspired menu. I had a Greek salad with blackened shrimp and Blake had a really good hamburger. They have a great venue in Raleigh and have lots of live music through the week. We’ve been there to hear bands play before. There is a Big Easy in Cary now and we have a gift card to use there in a few weeks with some friends.
We continued celebrating our anniversary with dinner last night at Daniel’s Pizza and Pasta in Apex. I had a gift card for Daniels that I had won through the Cary Chamber, so I was really excited to take Blake there for dinner! We shared an appetizer and then also shared two entrée meals of the Chicken Parmesan and Cajun Shrimp Pasta. The staff at Daniel’s was so friendly and really took good care of us. They knew it was our anniversary, so for dessert they treated to us a huge tiramisu dessert that even had “Happy Anniversary” written around the edge with chocolate sauce! We had a great time at dinner laughing and talking about our lives over the past 8 years (we’ve actually been together for 10 years). After dinner we did a few errands before we picked up the boys.
Thanks so much to Lois of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the lovely one-shoulder navy blue Boston Proper beaded embroidered shirt. I had lots of compliments on it as the beaded work was so unique! Be sure to mention Beccasblog the next time you are shopping at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex & downtown Cary and get 10% off your purchase! So I can proudly say that I spent my anniversary with Blake covering the importance of small business accounting and celebrating at special restaurants!

Networking and Helping Others
Last week was the May meeting for the Triangle Ladies Power Luncheon. The ‘Hostess of Ceremonies”, Carrie Peele, was off visiting her new grandbaby in California, so I was asked to fill in for her (but one can never really do as great of a job as Carrie does!) The speaker was Christine Hilt, President of CLH Design. She shared with the group of ladies her experience in working in a male dominated field and what it has taken her to overcome some obstacles along the way.
She gave some staggering statistics about women in landscaping design (there aren’t very many of them) and what different universities are doing to encourage more women to enter the field. I enjoyed hearing Christine speak and love the fact that she is also a fellow Rotarian. She has earned numerous certificates and awards for her work and leadership in the sustainability and LEED rating systems. Thanks for coming to share with us Christine! I was pleased to have my guests: Heidi Harris, Eleni Steadman and Frida Darmawan.
I was sitting with the Blue Diamond Limo table (in representation of Carrie) so my table guests included: Christine Hilt, Carrie Burr, Linda Craft, Kim Crump, Judy Fourie, and Dallas Bonavita. The Breast Cancer ‘SHE-RO’ for Pretty In Pink this month was Terry Buchanan. She was recommended by my good friend (and a good friend to many), Renee Groom. Terry was picked up for the luncheon in the Blue Diamond Pink Limo and was joined at lunch by her husband, two of her three sons, and several other guests. Terry came to the podium to share her breast cancer story and gave thanks to all of those who have supported her along the way.
It was great to see so many friends and to also make some new friends! I met Susan Crews, a Body Transformation Coach for her company called “Sparkle & Shine”. Her business card is really neat and was designed by TLPL Sponsor, Myra Ray, owner of MyrayGraphix.com. Smith & Smith, CPA has been a proud sponsor of the TLPL for several years and enjoys the relationship very much! Thanks to Carrie, Linda Sellers, Linda Brown, Becky, and the other Blue Diamond Limo staff that help make this a successful event each month! TLPL also did a purse & shoe collection this month for the group, Dress for Success Triangle Chapter. Carrie Burr, TLPl sponsor, headed up this project. Thanks to all who brought items in! Thanks also to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the lovely summer black dress I wore to the luncheon.
I’d also like to give a shout-out to Dallas Bonavita, Executive Director of a non-profit group called, Note in the Pocket. Susan Pruskin and I met Dallas a few months ago when she was brand new to the TLPL. Susan immediately booked her for a presentation at our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and set-up a clothing drive for our club members. Our mission was to collect gently used children’s clothing and money for the purchase of new underwear (it’s staggering and saddening to know how many kids in Wake County don’t have underwear for school).
Dallas presented to our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at our meeting last week and took with her all of our donations! What we collected will help so many at-risk and needy families/kids in our community. Note in the Pocket is holding a Volunteer Fair on Saturday, June 1st from 10am-1pm and is also hosting a Student Volunteer Leadership Program this summer. You can find out more on their website. What a great group for young adults to be part of and get some volunteer hours! Thanks Dallas and thank Susan for such a great program!

The egg lady “Cracks” for Business of Women
May is National Egg Month! Did you know that? Seriously, I’m not ‘yolking’ with you. So get ready because this blog is going to have LOTS of egg-jokes. Last week the Cary Chamber had their May Business of Women Luncheon and our speaker was, Jan Kelly, also known as the “EGG LADY”. Jan is the Executive Director of the North Carolina Egg Producers Association and has earned the nickname ‘the Egg Lady’ because of her work with local radio shows. Jan was a delightful speaker and really ‘cracked’ some good jokes, but also gave some fantastic facts about eggs! She said that the egg is known as ‘natures miracle food’, as an egg has 13 essential vitamins and minerals and only 70 calories and costs only 17 cents!! North Carolina comes in #9 out of the 50 states for egg production, so our local farmers (and hens) are busy (Iowa comes in #1)! That also means that the eggs sold in North Carolina stores are grown on a local farm.
The Egg Lady has the main duty of giving the public an ‘egg-ducation’ on the benefits of the incredible edible egg! She speaks to local groups as well as farmers, culinary chefs and hospital nutritionist. Eggs are so beneficial in helping with weight management as well as building strong muscles mass. She used her ‘egg-spert’ advice to help ’crack’ some of the common misconceptions about eggs (cholesterol, salmonella, hormone myth, etc.). This was such a fun luncheon and I’m glad that Delancy (Vice President of the Cary Chamber) invited Jan, the Egg Lady, to speak! She gave some delicious summer egg recipes (my mom will be impressed when I make the deviled eggs for her) and also had some really neat marketing promotional & educational materials with her. I love the EGG Shopping List for the fridge! Thanks so much Jan for coming to share egg-knowledge with us!
I was pleased to have Jaimie Kasopsky as my guest. Jaimie is a Business Performance Advisor with Insperity and is looking into membership with the Cary Chamber. I told her it was a great time to join as the Cary Chamber is in the middle of their Annual Membership Drive right now. The Business of Women luncheon takes the summer months off, so the luncheons will resume once again in September.

The Story of Mickey and Matthew…
I guess you are asking yourself…”Who is this Mickey and Matthew” that she is blogging about? Well, I will tell you! Mickey and Matthew represent a large part of our Mother’s Day weekend (last weekend). Blake and I traveled to Orlando, Florida, the home of Mickey Mouse (hence the Mickey part) for a family wedding. My lovely cousin, Katie, married her handsome fiancée, Chad, at the Disney Wedding Pavilion and had their reception at the Grand Floridian Convention Center. The wedding was beautiful and we had a wonderful (kid-free) long-weekend visit. Katie’s older sister, Kyle, also got married at the Disney Wedding Pavilion about 6 years ago and we were able to attend that beautiful wedding as well. So certainly one of the many benefits of working in a family business is being able to adjust your schedule so you can have a day of work-vacation to travel and celebrate those special occasions in life.
Blake thought he was pretty snazzy posing with lovely car that was parked outside of the Grand Floridian Hotel…I think Blake was trying to channel his inner “Great Gatsby” because he knows the movie recently came out and that I am DYING to see it sooner than later! I think he looks really sharp and really nice! We really enjoyed our mini-vacation; we stayed at the All Stars Movies Resort and attended the La Nouba Circque Du Soleil show at Downtown Disney. That night we had dinner at Wolf Gang Puck and spent four hours at Disney Quest (like a giant Dave & Busters indoor arcade).
We flew Southwest and had a wonderful experience with them (as always). Thanks so much to my Uncle Kevin and Aunt Debbie for helping us with our travel arrangements for the wedding! Thank you also to Lois Cozart from My Girlfriend’s Closet who helped me select a lovely floral one-shoulder Ralph Lauren dress for the Circque Du Soleil show and a fantastic bright orange/pink belted sundress for the wedding! Her store is the best place to shop for summer wedding and other great events! Her prices are hard to beat and their brands are endless! Thanks Lois!
And now let me tell you about Matthew…while we were gone to Orlando, my parents graciously came and kept the boys for us. Since Sunday was Mother’s Day, my father-in-law, Bob, invited my parents and the boys to join him and Sharon at The Matthew’s House (client for Smith & Smith, CPA) for their Mother’s Day Brunch. My parents were thrilled with the invite (they love Bob & Sharon just like I do) so they practiced all weekend with the boys about sitting nicely and using their manners, because The Matthew’s House is a very nice place!
The scrumptious menu included asparagus, pork lion, scalloped potatoes, Swiss chicken cutlets and several other delicious items. Our parents really enjoyed the brunch together and Sheila Ogle was even kind enough to give them a tour of the house. The Matthew’s House is a wonderful place to have wedding as well as corporate events, charity auctions, networking meetings and more! Their tagline is “When You Have the Need to Feed…remember The Matthew’s House” as they also offer off-site catering (we had a delicious catered meal from them during ‘tax season 2013’ and it was sooooooo good!)
So HEY! It’s the WEEKEND! Do something FUN!

Honor a Teacher…for ALL they do!
Last week was the Honor a Teacher Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Cary Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. The event was held at Koka Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park in Cary, NC. This was the 3rd year in a row for our company, Smith & Smith, CPA to participate by sponsoring a school in Western Wake County. A total of 27 schools were recognized, each with a particular business sponsoring the award for that school. We’ve worked with different schools each year and this year our honor a teacher award went to Kingswood Elementary School, located in the heart of downtown Cary. Alicia, Sharon and I (all from Smith & Smith, CPA) interviewed the five pre-selected teachers from Kingswood in mid-April. Our teacher nominees were (they were nominated by parents, teachers and the principal at Kingswood) Angela Browning, D’Ann Dickerson, Leanne Foster, Theresa Jones and Amy Liu.
All of these teachers were so wonderful and it was a pleasure to meet them and hear them tell us about their teaching careers & classrooms. You just sit there in awe of all they have to deal with on a daily basis in the classroom… Some of their stories are so touching and so amazing. You really have to give credit to the teachers of today! I wish we could have honored ALL of our nominees from Kingwood, and it was a tough decision! But we unanimously agreed that Angela Browning was our winner! She gives so much in the classroom and also finds time to volunteer and do work within her community on the weekends too! So at the Monday night Honor a Teacher program, Alicia and I were able to surprise and honor Angela with a check for $1,000 and a nice glass award. She was shocked and very excited!
A total of 27 teachers (and coaches) from 27 schools in Western Wake County were each presented with a check and award, such a great thing! The Honor a Teacher program continues to be one of my favorite Cary Chamber events each year! There were about 350 people present and the weather was PERFECT (thanks to Cary Chamber President Howard Johnson!) Kuddos to Allison Wrenn (Director of Education at the Cary Chamber) and Carrie Cassidy (Vice Chair of Education) for all their work on this program! Alicia and her daughter, Ava, really enjoyed the night too and were happy to see that Pamela Carpenter was the winner from Briarcliff Elementary School (she taught both of Alicia’s older girls). Congrats to all on the Honor a Teacher awards (nominees, families and winners!)

Be Smart Out There Ladies!
Women Busienss Owners Network of Cary had their May meeting last week at the lovely Prestonwood Country Club. Our speaker was Caroline Farmer from the Victims and Citizens Services Department of the NC Department of Justice. Her topic was “Protecting Your Identity and Your Business”, which has quickly become a HOT TOPIC for many lately. Seems like every time you turn around we are being warned about another scam or virus that is attacking our personal information. The main areas that Carolina Farmer covered included: identity theft, financial exploitation and other public policy initiatives on behalf of NC Attorney General Roy Cooper. Some of the simple (yet most intriguing) things she talked about included putting a security freeze on your credit, protecting your social security number, shredding documents and keeping an eye on your credit reports.
The crowd was very engaged with her presentation and we had lots of questions and audience participation. One of my favorite things she mentioned was the list of passwords and the most common passwords out there! Her list included the “Top 25 Passwords” which included: password1, 12345, football, basketball and Jesus! Susan Stanhope of Move Elders with Ease was the featured Lunch Sponsor and she had lots of “WOW!!!” comments from the group as she showed how helpful her service is to those who are experiencing or expecting a move in the near future. Thanks Susan!
The door prizes at the end of the meeting featured lots of cool gifts and our office, Smith & Smith, CPA ,gave away a lovely flower plant, bottle of wine and box of chocolate…just in time for Mother’s Day! Congrats to Rita Sellers of Outside Raleigh for winning our door prize! She’s a busy mom and she KNOWS it takes all three of those goodies to survive motherhood! The WBON May meeting was really fun, had lots of energy and exciting events! We gave out THREE $2,000 checks to our THREE scholarship winners, voted for our new WBON Executive Board for 2013-2014 and, of course, networked like crazy!
I’d also like to say “HELLO YELLOW” to My Girlfriend’s Closet! Here is a fun picture of me with WBON Sponsor, Nancy Cole, as we are both sporting FUN YELLOW SUNNY BRIGHT outfits right from My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary and downtown Apex). It’s great day to go shopping! And remember to keep your self protected…there are people out there waiting to trick you into all kinds of identity theft scandals! Be sure to join us on June 12th for our WBON Annual Spring MEGA Networking! This event draws a SOLD-OUT crowd and it is a wonderful way to meet lots of business ladies, network, make friends, find new business leads and best of all…HAVE FUN! Hope to see you there!

Vicki Lawrence comes to Women for Women of Pitt County
Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of joining my wonderful mom, Marsha Fleenor, at the Women for Women of Pitt County for their “Power of the Purse” annual luncheon. The event was held at the Greenville Convention Center Hilton (oddly enough where I had my first job at the Greenville Hilton)) and the featured speaker was Vicki Lawrence. Vicki Lawrence was invited to speak to the crowd of over 1,000 women (and a few men) because of her energy, enthusiasm and passion for helping others. I LOVED watching Vicki Lawrence on TV as the played the role of ‘Mama’ on the show “Mama’s Family”. I also watched her when she hosted Win, Lose or Draw. Vicki shared her incredible story of following in the steps of the famous female comedian/television star, Carol Burnett (simply because she looked very much like Carol).
One of my favorite things that Vicki said was “As a woman in your 20’s, you are so worried about what others are thinking of you…as a woman in your 40’s, you don’t care what others are thinking of you…and as a woman in your 60’s you finally realize that no one was thinking of you in the first place!!!!” She also mentioned her personal motto several times, “Life is much too serious to be taken seriously, so let’s have fun!” She said that motto got her through some really tough years during her career. Who knew TV & comedy could be such a stressful & grueling industry!?!?
I had a wonderful time at this event with my mom and the mission of Women for Women of Pitt County is so very powerful! Women for Women is a non-profit group comprised of women committed to helping others in the community through the power of giving. They award annual grants to program and organizations that offer hope, knowledge, support, opportunities, care and most of all, EMPOWERMENT to women and girls of Pitt County. Women for Women of Pitt County is very similar to the Cary Women’s Giving Network, of which I am a proud member. We had a delightful time meeting a couple at our table, Charles and Jewelle Rogers (from Washington, NC). They were the most adorable couple and have a long history of supporting programs & events in Pitt County. Mom and I enjoyed chatting with Charles and Jewelle after the program. I’d like to say a very personal thank you to my father, Michael Fleenor, for purchasing the tickets for us to attend. Nothing like spending a great afternoon with your mom laughing together while celebrating the accomplishments & empowerment of women!

A Crazy Blog about Animals and Friendships
You know the phrase…“Lions, Tigers and Bears OH MY!” Well, my blog today is “Tigers and Horses OH MY!” Last week the White Tiger Taekwondo bus came over to Smith & Smith, CPA to visit. Blake, Bob and Cam went out to see the bus with Fred (from White Tiger) and of course I was right behind them with my camera to take their picture! White Tiger has great programs for ALL ages and they are gearing up for their summer camp programs. What better way to promote your summer camps then with a HUGE bus like this!?! So we say…TIGERS! OH MY!
On Saturday, my Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire, gathered together at The Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC to work on “FARM DAY”. Farm Day is a chance for groups to come out and put some ‘sweat and tears’ into the farm. That’s right, it’s a day to help the staff & girls of The Corral with projects around the farm. This was our first time helping with FARM DAY and we had a great time! We did all kind of jobs from moving the hay bale protectors, painting, moving & loading wood, trimming the bushes, planting flowers, fixing broken flower beds, hauling loads to the different fields and much more! Our club is really looking forward to working with The Corral on future grants & projects. So we way…HORSES, OH MY!
And one final shout-out to some of my ‘mommy-friends’! Our youngest kids go to the best preschool in town and I have really formed some great friendships with all of the other parents/mommies in the classroom. So a few weekends ago I had dinner with Megan and Katherine. We met for dinner & drinks at the Carolina Ale House and had a great time sharing work stories, but also, PARENTING stories!!! Our three boys (along with the other kiddos in the class) are the best of friends and always seem to be up to something together at pre-school! Thanks Megan and Katherine for a fun night out! We missed the rest of you mommies from our preschool, but we know we will see you all at our next gathering!
Is it the weekend yet!?!?!?! Anyone else feel that way!?!?

Cary Chamber says “Women ONLY” for the Ladies Golf Tourney
Last week I had the pleasure of playing in the Cary Chamber of Commerce Ladies Golf Tourney. That’s right…WOMEN ONLY for this golfing event! The Cary Chamber holds this ladies golf tourney once a year, typically at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary. I played a few years ago with some friends and had a wonderful time! So this year when Delancy (Vice-President at the Cary Chamber) announced that the Putting Green Contest would benefit the WBON of Cary Scholarship Fund, I knew I had to get some teams together to play!
WBON of Cary was pleased to have TWO wonderful teams of AWESOME women out there playing in the Ladies Golf Tourney. Seriously, we were about as awesome as they come! We were there to have fun, laugh, network, and yes, even play a little bit of golf! The weather was “okay“…it had rained over the weekend, so the course was nice and soupy/soggy/wet for us, but we really didn’t mind. I had the pleasure of playing on a team with Susan Pruskin, Dr. Heather Sefried and Autumn LaBarca. Our other WBON of Cary team consisted of Lisa Cotter, Wendy Howington, Judy Fourie and Dorothy (from Nirvelli Day Spa).
We had to borrow clubs from friends, thank you Margaret Neill for letting me borrow your lovely purple clubs!!!! Autumn had arranged for our two teams to have matching pink “LADY TIGERS” shirts from White Tiger Taekwondo, along with matching aluminum water bottles. Thanks Master Rondy! Even though we might not have played the best golf, we sure did look great playing in the ladies golf tourney! Thanks to Peggy Hoffman and Frida Darmawan (both from WBON) for helping with the Putting Green Contest. Thanks also to the Cary Chamber for including us in this ladies golf tourney!
